M E R R I V A L E - A name that enthralls...or bores?

I feel like sharing this hidden gem with the world. This name was a great love of mine a long while ago and I totally forgot about it…I still absolutely adore it and am now seriously thinking of using this name as a first or second name.

I would be really interested in Nameberry community opinions as I think this name is beyond gorgeous. But perhaps, it’s not everyone’s taste?

PS I also like Merivale…

MAGNIFICENT NAME!

Have never heard it before.

It combines the merry, bouncy, cheery [name_f]Merry[/name_f] with vale, which sounds sylvan and English.

Where did you find it?

It sounds like a name for a community or small town.

Yippeee  I’m so glad you like it LeslieMarion!!!

I think I saw it in a book, but I can’t remember the name, topic or genre. But it’s a surname…like Merriweather (that’s a nice name too). I remember thinking it was a lovely/velvety name.

And yes, Rkrd, it does sound like a lovely small town’s name. That makes me like it even more…cheers

While I wouldn’t choose it, I like that it’s cute but versatile. She can go my [name_f]Merry[/name_f], [name_u]Val[/name_u], [name_u]Vale[/name_u] or even [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], if she chooses

I never heard about it before. What does it mean? I think I like it, it has a lovely sound.

Merrivale…

I like it!

I also like Meriweather, [name_f]Merrily[/name_f] and Meriadoc.

I saw this on another list you wrote on another thread and I absolutely [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] IT!!! What a positively JOYFUL name!!! Full of sweetness and possibility.

Absolutely enthralls
And seems to suit your bohemian, ecclectic taste so well! I think it’s perfect for you, and would seriously consider using it as both a first and a middle.

Magnificent name!

I think Merivale (my preferred spelling) is quite pretty. It has a sweet fairy tale quality to it and a joyful sound. I also love Meriwether too.

Thanx for commenting, it’s good to hear positive things about a name you love

Great to see you like it too !!! I believe it’s a surname & place name, but I’m not sure of the exact etymology…so I did some research & came up with my own meaning…I’m assuming [name_f]Merri[/name_f]/ [name_f]Meri[/name_f] = [name_f]Merry[/name_f]/ Sea/ [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_u]Vale[/name_u] in Latin means “be well, be strong” & to sing…it also means a lush valley/ dale that contains a river or stream…

[name_u]Vale[/name_u] also comes from the root words =

“[name_u]VALE[/name_u], [name_u]VAL[/name_u] & VALU meaning STRENGTH, [name_m]WORTH[/name_m] & [name_m]VALOR[/name_m] - all good things. The Latin valeo & valere mean all these fine things, and the English words have retained and sustained the values inherent in the originals.”(Source: http://www.english-for-students.com/vale.html)

Words derived from these root meanings =

  • Valetude : Health’ strength; state of health
  • [name_m]Valiant[/name_m] : A person who is brave; honorable
  • Valiancy : The quality of bravery; valor
  • Valid : Strong; legally correct
  • Validity : [name_u]Truth[/name_u]; legal strength
  • Validate : Make valid; approve legally; declare
  • [name_m]Valor[/name_m] : Value; worth; as, a woman of valor
  • Valorous : Having the quality of valor; brave
  • Value : Purchasing price; actual worth
  • Evaluate : Find out the value; appraise actual worth

Cheers Sorceress !!! [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] to see your approval of this name…I was hoping it would sound fresh & melodic to others…

[name_u]Mischa[/name_u] ~

I agree with you re Merivale…it seems more sophisticated than Merrivale…I’ll definitely consider both spellings…I just thought the later version looked more feminine & accentuated the “[name_f]Merry[/name_f]”…I’m chuffed to hear you think it’s a pretty name, thanx for the positive feedback!!!
