Mabry too close to Mayberry?...what's the issue?!

So I’ve posted on here about the name [name]Mabry[/name] and I’ve talked to a few friends about it. I’ve gotten several reactions about how “it’s too close to [name]Mayberry[/name]!” or “she’ll get called [name]Mayberry[/name]!” Am I missing something? Is there something wrong with this?? I guess I don’t really see the big deal of getting mistaken for [name]Mayberry[/name] occasionally (my name is very common yet people always call me a name similar to mine and I just politely correct them, I don’t think it’s a big deal). So is there some sort of association I’m missing or do people just not like [name]Mayberry[/name] at all? Also, any opinions on the name [name]Mabry[/name]? I’d love to hear others’ thoughts. Thanks!

I think sometimes people say things like that in the hopes of dissuading you from using a name they just plain don’t like. They’re trying to soften the blow instead of saying “I think that’s a dumb name.” That being said, [name]Mayberry[/name] isn’t a negative association. If it doesn’t bother you and you love the name and you don’t care that your friends don’t like it, go ahead and use it. It’s your kid, not theirs.

This.

I think [name]Mabry[/name] is a lovely name, and very unique. I dont see why [name]Mayberry[/name] is a negative association. Like the pp poster said if you love it, go for it!

I just don’t care for the name. To me, it is another trendy/surname type name. I don’t think of [name]Mayberry[/name] at all. I think previous posters are correct in that people don’t want to be rude and flat out tell you they don’t like the name.

I agree that this is probably what’s happening.
I personally don’t care for the name at all, it definitely seems like a trendy/invented name. But then again, it’s not my kid to name!

I think [name]Mabry[/name] is cute but it’s a bit of a struggle to say so many consonants. That said, I tend to shy away from names that sound like other names because I don’t want people to confuse them, so maybe that’s what they’re getting at?

I actually know a [name]Mabry[/name], and no one has (to my knowledge) ever confused it with [name]Mayberry[/name]. I agree that they probably told you that to avoid telling you it’s a stupid name.

The sound is somewhat pretty, but the name feels made-up and sort of meaningless to me. It’s just a nice-enough-sounding collection of letters without any substance behind it. If the name has some personal meaning for you then you should use it, but i think what people dislike is the made-up feel of it.

I totally agree with this!

Thank you everyone! That all makes much more sense and I’m glad I wasn’t missing some negative association.

Is it pronounced [name]May[/name]-bree? I really like it.

Yes that’s how it’s said!
