My favorite would be [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f], but I would spell it [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f], it looks less like you just mashed [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] together and more like a real name. I usually despise names that are/sound made up but I have a soft spot for [name_f]Edeline[/name_f] (eh-del-een), which I have on my signature, because I adore nn [name_m]Edel[/name_m]! [name_u]Adel[/name_u] would be very cute too, and way better than [name_f]Adal[/name_f], which is another reason to pick [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] over [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] is way too popular for me to like, and if you are going to spell [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] then I would advice against [name_f]Maci[/name_f], a name whose spelling is also unusual
[name_f]Maci[/name_f] is a name I would have quite the hard time seeing on a president
love them all my favorite is [name_f]Maci[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f]…I think of a cute little girl and a cool grown woman with all 3 of those and yes I think they work in a professional field especially this day and age where most little girls are being named these things and because of that I don’t think there is anything they could be teased for!! I’d spell it how you have it [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] or [name_f]Adalynn[/name_f]
I love [name_f]Ava[/name_f]! So sweet. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] vaguely rhymes and it sounds so sweet (and southern!)
1.) None of them make me turn up my nose in the slightest. My first reaction is feminine, on trend, and sweet. They are all names that will suit a little girl born in 2017 very well. She will never have to explain her name or be asked “what was it again?” and I personally think that’s important!
2.) I would spell it [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f], it’s the most common and probably how people will assume it’s spelled, however there are so many spellings that she will likely have to spell it for people anyway, so go with what you love!
3.) Right now… I am not sure I can picture a judge or CEO named [name_f]Maci[/name_f]. However, in two/three/four decades, there will be exponentially more [name_f]Maci[/name_f]'s, [name_f]Ava[/name_f]'s, [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f]'s running the business world and government than there are today. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] are classic and I have no trouble imagining those names in the corporate world even today.
4.) I said them all aloud, because I really couldn’t think of any teasing potential and the ONLY thing I could come up with is that [name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] can sort of be turned into va-jay-jay LOL! But very doubtful that will ever happen!
I don’t think you could go wrong with any of these! All lovely. Congrats mama!
[name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] is my favorite, but I would spell it [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f]. [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is sweet, will age well, and sounds very smart, imo.
I like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] or [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]. [name_f]Maci[/name_f] is also cute but I don’t see it on a judge. Possibly a bit better with the [name_f]Macy[/name_f] spelling. I like the [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] spelling as it seems most classic. Another suggestion for you is [name_f]Zadie[/name_f], which works on an adult for me because of the author.
[name_f]Ava[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] is my favorite. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] isn’t super exciting but it’s classic, she won’t have to constantly spell it, and I adore [name_f]Jayne[/name_f].
[name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] is nice too. [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is overdone as a MN in my opinion so I don’t care for that. [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f] is sweet. I think the [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] spelling others have suggested would be nice as well.
[name_f]Maci[/name_f] is just not a name I like and as someone with a similar sounding name in an ultra-professional job I can tell you that I do not care for my name AT ALL. There is no way that [name_f]Maci[/name_f] is a judge, CEO, or president.

Blerg. I’m new to these boards and wasn’t sure how the “reply” feature was going to work. I was hoping it would reply directly underneath the original comment. Oops.
@alyssaloveskyle - that’s a good point: by the time our daughter (if it’s a girl – we’re not finding out the gender until the birth! Eek!) goes to get a job, there will be tons of kids her name job-hunting, so maybe the “professional” thing isn’t such a big deal.
@kristenwhite - 1) That is the best possible reaction we could’ve hoped for. 2) “She will likely have to spell it for people anyway, so go with what you love!” You’re right on that. She’s already going to have to spell our last name for anyone who needs to write/type it, so would making her spell her first name, too, be a burden? (In that case, both [name_f]Maci[/name_f] and [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] would be out, since either could be spelling in multiple ways!) 4) I literally laughed out loud at this. I hadn’t even thought of that! This is exactly why I posted!
@emmamay - thank you!
@sarah1800 - ooh, I hadn’t heard of [name_f]Zadie[/name_f] before! I will run it by DH. For some reason, I am loving “Z” girl names lately!
@athena3321 - You’re right on [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. I’ve always loved that name, but I didn’t feel like the other possibilities went as well with it. (Plus, I can’t have a [name_f]Maci[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]… sounds too much like [name_f]Macy[/name_f] [name_u]Gray[/name_u]! lol) I’m curious: do you ever feel like you’ve been “held back” or not taken as seriously at your job with a similar sounding name to [name_f]Maci[/name_f]? I mean, I always hope that society will mature a little and quit treating women unequally in the work place, but it’s a hard reality that I do have to face. I certainly don’t want to give our child a disadvantage from day 1. :-/
In case I missed anyone - thanks, all, for the replies! This has been SO helpful!
What about [name_f]Zahara[/name_f]?
I don’t like [name_f]Maci[/name_f] because of the spelling and its trendiness. I like [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Adeline[/name_f] spelled one of those two ways.
I absolutely love all three names! I think [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] is my favourite, though I would spell it as [name_f]Adalynn[/name_f].
My second favourite would be [name_f]Maci[/name_f], just because it’s a little bit more unique than [name_f]Ava[/name_f], which i hear a lot, but really, they’re all equally wearable!
My personal belief is that a [name_f]Maci[/name_f], [name_u]Casey[/name_u], [name_u]Stacy[/name_u], [name_f]Lacey[/name_f], etc. will all have a hard time with initial perceptions as opposed to a [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Regina[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], etc. It can be overcome but I think it’s initially harder.
But I think it could go the same for men with a Khaydin versus a [name_m]Caden[/name_m] or whatnot. There’s research out there that shows name perception has a huge influence on which resumes get call backs/interviews and which don’t.
My dislike of my own name and how it’s perceived is probably why I tend to prefer classic names or, if unusual, a more “normal” spelling.
[name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] is my favorite!
Thank you, all, for your thoughtful comments and replies! My husband asked me why I’m continuing to search for girl names when we have three, and I told him it’s because I’m still not sure there’s a “spark” when I hear any of those 3 names. (I LOVE both the boy names we picked out and get excited at the thought of using either one of them, so maybe I’m setting the bar too high?) That said, I’m open to other suggestions. I guess the best way to describe our naming style is that we’re really looking for something that’s not “weird” or unique but just more rare in nature. (I realize the girl names I posted here don’t really fit that bill…and maybe that’s why I’m not 100% satisfied with them. For reference, the boy names we picked out are Dax and Lincoln.) We’re discovering that there are tons of names that technically fit that description, but we’re just having a hard time finding a girl name that really resonates. I want to be truly excited at the possibility of using it, you know?
@autumnreverie: I AM digging “Z” names lately, but I just can’t find one that I truly LOVE. Zahara makes me think of the Sahara Desert. I’ve searched for “Z” names, but feel free to send more my way if you have others you think would sound good with our last name!
Hmm. Maci is not even in the top 250, so it’s interesting that you would say that it’s trendy. I hadn’t considered that fact at all because “trendy” to me means top 100. …Although - not-so-fun fact: a co-worker announced on Wednesday that her son and DIL (in the next state, but STILL) are naming their child “Macy,” so maybe it is more common than we realized.
@athena3321: I can see your point, although I think first perceptions of a name are going to vary from person to person and largely depend on one’s past experience with similarly-named people. I feel the same way about “Laci” and most names that end in that /ee/ sound, so I’m not sure why Maci seems different to me – could be because I only know a couple girls named Maci and they were opposite of the type of girl I normally think of when I hear that type of /ee/ name? It’s been very interesting to discuss this all with my husband and discover associations he has with names that I would’ve never considered (and vice versa, I’m sure). So in that regard, we’d never get to pick a name because everyone has an objection to something!
The resume thing really scares me. I’ve been trying to do some research in my spare time about names specifically, a person’s success rate (whether that be in career, popularity, or just overall happiness) in correlation with their name. I think it’s going to be tough to choose a name that fits our “rare but not unique” desire and that both my husband and I like. We probbbbbably should’ve started having these very serious name discussions sooner than my 29th week of pregnancy. #oops.
I quite like [name_f]Maci[/name_f], though I prefer the [name_f]Macy[/name_f] spelling, and that would be my favourite from your 3 top names. [name_f]Ava[/name_f] sounds harsh to me and [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] with any spelling just has no appeal at all for me. I think [name_f]Zadie[/name_f] is an interesting suggestion and could work. I adore [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] you mentioned that you like, and I assume it’s no more popular than [name_f]Ava[/name_f], but for me it’s a lot more appealing. I think a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] could be any profession. Is [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] an option
I like [name_f]Maci[/name_f] best from your options, but think [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], which you said you also liked, is much better and would suit a woman in any profession. Is [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] a possibility? I know, like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], it’s popular, but surely no more than [name_f]Ava[/name_f] which you’re prepared to consider?
I’m sorry [name_f]Ava[/name_f] and [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f] don’t appeal to me at all.
Any other thoughts on this are much-appreciated!
We are also open to other name suggestions since I don’t [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] any of our current girl names. My husband doesn’t like any masculine names on girls, which rules out like, 7 of the names I added to our list.
For reference, here are some names we like for both genders…feel free to suggest other names based on these:
- [name_m]Dax[/name_m] (boy)
- [name_m]Lincoln[/name_m] (boy)
- [name_m]Cooper[/name_m] (boy)
- [name_u]Jace[/name_u] (boy)
- [name_u]Parker[/name_u] (boy)
- [name_m]Clayton[/name_m] (boy)
- [name_u]Owen[/name_u] (boy)
- [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] (girl)
- [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] (girl)
- [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] (girl)
- [name_u]Ainsley[/name_u] (girl)
- [name_f]Kinsley[/name_f] (girl)
- [name_u]Londyn[/name_u] (girl)
- [name_u]Kendall[/name_u] (girl)
- [name_u]Kassidy[/name_u] (girl)
- [name_f]Zella[/name_f] (girl)
- [name_f]Zayda[/name_f] (girl)
- [name_f]Zara[/name_f] (girl)
Adalyn/Adelyn Grace is very pretty! I agree that it is spunky, but will age well.
Maci is growing on me, as I recently met a Maycie. It is really cute, but overall I prefer Adalyn/Adelyn. Good luck
