Madeleine: How do you say it?

I live in the US - originally from the south but now living in the northeast.

I really like Madeleine as a nod to my French roots, and my husband’s Italian background. It feels very European and sophisticated.

Usually, I’d pronounce the more common spelling of Madeline as “Mad-eh-line” vs “Mad-eh-lyn”, unless otherwise told. I tend to prefer the “-line” to “-lyn” ending better.

I feel like I’d pronounce Madeleine like “Mad-eh-lane” or “Mad-eh-lane-uh”. It could be “Mad-eh-line” though.

How would you pronounce it?

I say mad-uh-len, which I think is as close to correct as you can get in [name_f]English[/name_f].

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], I personally would pronounce [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]
as ma-duh-lane! Nevertheless, this is a super sweet name x🤗

I would say it “mad uh lenn”. [name_f]My[/name_f] [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation is terrible though haha Definitely not mad uh lane though

Mad-uh-len would be my guess, though the one I knew was a mad-uh-lin

I say mad-uh-LEHN.

Mad (eh) lehn is the [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation. If you want mad-dah-lay-nah, I’d go for the Italian [name_f]Maddalena[/name_f]. [name_f]Madelaine[/name_f] is mad-eh-laine, too, so that may appeal? I’d avoid [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] if you don’t want the “lehn” ending, myself, but it is a nice name.

I pronounce it Mad-uh-line.

Mad-eh-lane

Mad-eh-len

I’d say line for [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], len for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] (although in practice I think my len is relatively similar to my lin), lin for [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]

Agree with pp that I’d use [name_f]Maddalena[/name_f] if you wanted that pronunciation.

I would either say Mad-uh-len or Mad-uh-leen. I’ve read so many discussion posts on this name and it seems everyone pronounces a bit differently :upside_down_face:

mad-uh-len/lyn, the endings sound very similar to me

I say it as mad-uh-leen!

I pronounce [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] the same as [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] which is MA-deh-lin (I have an [name_f]English[/name_f] accent)

The [name_u]French[/name_u] pronunciation is closest to Mad-uh-lehn though.

i say mad-eh-lane with that spelling

For me:

[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]: mad-uh-len
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f]: mad-uh-line
[name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]: mad-uh-lyn
[name_f]Madelaine[/name_f]: mad-uh-lane

Mad-uh-len is how it is typically pronounced, but I personally prefer Mad-uh-lane.

I’d pronounce it Mad-uh-lane

i would say madeleine as “mad-uh-lin” - the same as madelyn. i know a lot of madeleines, and they all say it like this as well.
