Madeleine... without the nickname Maddy

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone!
I really love the name [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], but I’m not a massive fan of [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] as a nickname. I know quite a few (all Madisons though), and it just feels quite basic.
Some of you will probably say just use [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] without a nickname and if you enforce it it will stick, but I myself have a name that gets shortened to an automatic nickname and it’s unavoidable. Unfortunately, with my name, there are literally no other options, but I think you could get more out of [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f].
What do you think of [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] “Mae”, [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] “Molly”, [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] “Della”, and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] “Maggie”?
I know these are all stretches, however, and she would be bound to get [name_f]Maddy[/name_f]. I suppose since I don’t like it, best to save it for a middle or not at all.
I don’t mind the spelling [name_f]Madi[/name_f], but overall, I’m just wouldn’t want a daughter called [name_f]Maddy[/name_f].

Any more nickname suggestions would also be appreciated.

Thank you so much!

I like [name_f]Mae[/name_f] and [name_f]Della[/name_f] best, and I think they’re the most intuitive.

Other suggestions:
[name_u]Dell[/name_u]
[name_f]Lena[/name_f]
[name_f]Leni[/name_f]
[name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
[name_f]Minnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lindy[/name_f]

Also, FWIW, I know a [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] who is only ever called [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]!

[name_f]Della[/name_f] works real well for me! I also love [name_u]Mal[/name_u] and [name_u]Lenny[/name_u].

It might be unavoidable in the sense that someone will, maybe, call her [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] at some point, but… if she doesn’t like it, it’s totally correctable!

i like Madeleine “Mae”!

i do think this is the case unfortunately if you don’t want to deal with Maddie. however, i also believe that if you had a Madeleine who was called Maddie occasionally, you would begin to associate the name Maddie with your daughter, and that would make you like it more!

i think it comes down to if she is ok with being called Maddie or not - if she isn’t, i imagine she’d rarely get called it since she’d tell people not to call her that.

I suppose!!
I quite like the [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] spelling - better than [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] in my opinion.
I think I would grow to associate it with my future daughter… although I feel if I was to commit to it, I’d have to be ok with the nickname.
[name_f]My[/name_f] parents hated the intuitive nickname for my name and told me from a veryyyy young age to hate it too - I’m called it constantly despite correcting people, and somehow hate it even more than they do now! (And yet, they won’t let me change my name!)
I wouldn’t want to put a child through that. Besides, despite being not a gigantic fan of [name_f]Maddie[/name_f], it’s far nicer than my nickname.

I like [name_f]Molly[/name_f] best. [name_f]Mae[/name_f] and [name_f]Della[/name_f] also work. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] feels like a very big stretch.
[name_f]Addie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]
[name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_u]Dell[/name_u]
[name_u]Mel[/name_u]
[name_u]Lane[/name_u]
[name_u]Lynn[/name_u]
[name_f]Elle[/name_f]
[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ella[/name_f]

I couldn’t remember a nn I had heard for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] so I asked Google and Google did not disappoint:
[name_f]Magda[/name_f], Madda, [name_f]Lena[/name_f], Mädel, Madou, Mado, [name_f]Madelon[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Mae[/name_f] too

I think all of these work pretty well, my favourite being [name_f]Mae[/name_f]!

[name_f]Della[/name_f] and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] are sweet! I’m also a fan of [name_f]Lena[/name_f] / [name_f]Layna[/name_f] for a more straightforward nickname other than [name_f]Maddy[/name_f]!

I love [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] ‘Della’ - so cute and sparky. [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] ‘Mae’ and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] ‘Molly’ are lovely too.

Out of interest which pronunciation do you use for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]?

Some other nicknames:

Leine (Lin or Len)
[name_f]Mila[/name_f]
[name_f]Mallie[/name_f]
[name_f]Mimi[/name_f]
[name_f]Mitzi[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Leni[/name_f]
[name_f]Lina[/name_f]
[name_u]Mel[/name_u]
[name_f]Mellie[/name_f]
[name_u]Dennie[/name_u]
[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]

Honestly, I haven’t decided…
I know it’s supposed to be Madelyn, but my brain always reads it as Mad-uh-LINE (like Caroline)
I read it like Madeleine, but I’d probably be more likely to use the Madelyn pronunciation in real life?
I do also love Madelaine, to get the nickname Lainie (Laney).
I love your suggestions of Mia, Lina, and Maisie!

I would just use [name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Molly[/name_f], or [name_f]Della[/name_f] on its own. Using [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] opens up the possibility of other nicknames that you don’t like.

Fella feels the most intuitive for me of your ideas, but I like Mae and Molly. With the pronunciation I use for it, I’d be inclined to use Lena or even Leine (pronounced like Lyn).

I do know a Madeleine who has never been a Maddy, or any thing else, though.

i know 2 madeleines (spelt madelyn, and madeline) who strictly only go by their full name! i know another who goes by liene (lee-nee). i love della, and mae as nicknames as hard as it may be to stick, it’s so cute!

so I do know a [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] (-line pronunciation) who goes by her full name. I wouldn’t even think to call her [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] because I just can’t imagine her as a [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]. maybe this would be the case for your [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]!

however, im seeing the opposite happen in real time in my preschool class. (name edited for privacy) there’s a little boy who likes to be called Alex—he introduces himself as [name_u]Alex[/name_u], he refers to himself as [name_u]Alex[/name_u], and he says he prefers to go by [name_u]Alex[/name_u]. he is also 3 years old. mom wants him to be called [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and has asked us to call him [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], which we try to do. the problem is… he is such an [name_u]Alex[/name_u] and so not an [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. we want to respect mom’s wishes but it’s difficult when he likes to be called [name_u]Alex[/name_u] and we naturally want to call him [name_u]Alex[/name_u].

I grew up with a [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] who NEVER went by [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] at school. She goes by it now (she’s 26) but never until she left school, it was just [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]. But if you don’t like [name_f]Maddy[/name_f], I wouldn’t use the name as she may want to go by [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] and it’s something out of your hands.

Great point, thanks

[name_f]Maggie[/name_f] might be a bit of a stretch for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], but I think you could definitely still use it once it’s enforced. You might also like [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] with the nick name [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] or even just on it’s own. I don’t think the name [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] would get automatic nick names unless you specifically told people what her nickname was.
