I absolutely love [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], and [name_f]Merry[/name_f] is a wonderful nickname!
It’s by far the most distinctive name on your list, in my opinion. The others all feel either overused themselves ([name_f]Madeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Maddie[/name_f], [name_f]Bella[/name_f]) or part of a very popular trend ([name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f] etc. and all the A——a girls’ names in use at the moment).
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] is a lovely soft, warm, solid, underused classic, and has no race connotations to me at all. I’ve heard some describe it as a quintessentially Jewish name, but I don’t even see it like that. I knew a lovely one, nicknamed [name_f]Mim[/name_f].
Definitely [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]. It’s the most substantial on your list - the others seem sort of lightweight or trendy, through they are fine names. I don’t think [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] is particularly racialized. I might think it reads slightly Jewish, but not enough to assume anything about the person named it.
Thanks guys, I see that you guys seem to all like [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]. But the problem is that I don’t really “love” it like I do with [name_f]Bella[/name_f] (but I’m not really sure on using it Bc of the popularity). Sooo maybe you guys can come up with several more reasons to persuade me?
[name_u]Love[/name_u] Miriram!
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.
Here are my thoughts:
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]: I’m w/you. I love [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]. It’s smart & polished, but also sweet & friendly. [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] is trendy though, & kind of bratty sounding. I like the nn [name_f]Maisy[/name_f]. Oh, also. This may have pronunciation issues. A lot of people say it Mad-uh-lynn. I think Mad-uh-line makes more sense though, & prettier in my opinion.
[name_f]Mila[/name_f] nn [name_f]Miley[/name_f]: Well, I wouldn’t say this is unexpected. It’s absolutely sky rocketing in popularity. Also, are you saying it ‘My-luh’? I think that it’s usually ‘Mee-luh’. Which I find prettier. The nn [name_f]Miley[/name_f] wouldn’t work then, but it’s too [name_f]Miley[/name_f] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] anyway. I knew a [name_f]Camilla[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mila[/name_f] (sort of an unpleasant child, but I found her name beautiful!)
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] nn [name_f]Merry[/name_f]: I don’t really associate this w/any skin color. I love it though! It is beautiful, no nonsense (I like that description!), & not terribly common at all. It’s still recognizable though. I like the nn [name_f]Merry[/name_f], but kind of prefer [name_f]Miri[/name_f].
[name_f]Alina[/name_f] nn [name_u]Ali[/name_u]: Hm. [name_f]Alina[/name_f] is fine. I don’t think that it’s amazing, but it’s fine. It’s uncommon, but the kind of name isn’t uncommon, you know what I mean? I don’t like [name_u]Ali[/name_u] much. Kind of 90s.
[name_f]Bella[/name_f] nn maybe nn [name_f]Belle[/name_f]: I like [name_f]Bella[/name_f], but [name_f]Bella[/name_f] only as a nn itself. [name_f]Arabella[/name_f], [name_f]Annabella[/name_f], [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], or [name_f]Mirabella[/name_f] are all quite lovely. It is popular, but classic & not childish.
In conclusion, [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] for sure gets my vote.
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.
My vote also goes to [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] - strong and familiar, not overused, lots of nickname potential and it sounds lovely.
[name_f]Bella[/name_f] is very pretty but I have reservations about using [name_f]Bella[/name_f] as a stand alone name. For me it feels too intimate to be used outside friends and family. Probably something to do with it meaning “beautiful.” I worked with an [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] who chose to go by [name_f]Bella[/name_f] in the workplace and it just felt off, like forced familiarity. I might be the minority though, not sure how others felt.
Loving a name is what matters the most, certainly not my opinion or anyone else’s. I’m all for using a name that gives you the fuzzies inside.
I voted for [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], it’s definitely my favorite, followed by [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], nicknamed [name_f]Lina[/name_f] or [name_f]Mae[/name_f], if a nickname is needed.
However, if [name_f]Bella[/name_f] is the one you love the most, please use it. It’s pretty, I can see it on an adult, and it’s straightforward.
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]: [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] is extremely popular right now, and i think a lot of people will assume it’s short for [name_f]Maddison[/name_f], with a different nickname this would be my favorite.
[name_f]Mila[/name_f] nn [name_f]Miley[/name_f]: It depends on where you are of course but I think [name_f]Mila[/name_f] is actually getting pretty popular and its a bit too sweet/ childish for my taste.
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] nn [name_f]Merry[/name_f]: I would assume before meeting the child that she was either Jewish or Muslim but I am also a teacher and that has been the case 100% of the time so far. I do like the idea of nn [name_f]Merry[/name_f].
[name_f]Alina[/name_f] nn [name_u]Ali[/name_u]: I would be afraid of it getting misheard/ mispronounced / misspelled as it’s so similar to [name_f]Elena[/name_f]/ [name_f]Elaine[/name_f], but that aside its a beautiful name.
[name_f]Bella[/name_f] nn maybe [name_f]Belle[/name_f]?: I think [name_f]Bella[/name_f] works best as a nn, and comes off a little childish as a stand alone name. Maybe [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f] or [name_u]Bellamy[/name_u]?
Thank you guys SO MUCH for listing the reasons! It helped A LOT! So here are some of my thoughts after reading all of the comments:
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Maddie[/name_f]: yes, I agree with all of you that the nn [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] is very trendy and even a bit bratty feeling, but I do love the name [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and don’t really want to give up on a name just because of it’s nickname. I pronounce it MA-duh-[name_u]Lynn[/name_u].
[name_f]Mila[/name_f]/[name_f]Miley[/name_f]: I pronounce it MY-la. I do like it very much even though some of you say that it’s getting trendy. It just has this special charm that I adore. I did get rid of the nn though. Since it’s already a short name and you guys all think that the nn Miley sounds too “Miley Cyrus”, ill just leave it the way it is.
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f]: I kind of got rid of the association now, but still am not absolutely loving it, if you know what I mean. I do like it though, and I’m fine the either [name_f]Merry[/name_f] or [name_f]Miri[/name_f] as a nickname.
[name_f]Alina[/name_f]: this is another name I’m getting rid of! Because I do agree that it sounds like [name_f]Elena[/name_f] and will probably be misspelled all the time by people who don’t know her.
[name_f]Bella[/name_f]: I agree with absolutely EVERYTHING you guys said, but am just not ready to give it up either. I don’t really want it to be a nickname of anything else, because I feel like then it makes it even more childish-sounding. I know it’s popular, I know it sounds very childish, but there’s just something with this name that I love so much I just can’t give it up. But then I’m also not really ready to use it, considering the popularity. It’s a really tough decision.
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] could also be [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] (MIH-mee), which is cute on a girl and smooth on an adult.
I love [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] in any spelling. No special reason. I just love its sound.
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] is a pretty name, but I always feel a bit uncomfortable with people using names from another culture, so there’s that. I love [name_f]Alina[/name_f] and [name_f]Bella[/name_f], but [name_f]Bella[/name_f] is just SO popular. I think [name_f]Mila[/name_f] is my favorite, but I’d pronounce it Mee-lah, not My-lah. There might be some problems with the pronunciation, but I don’t think it’d be that big of a deal though.
