Madeline or Josephine?

I can’t decide…

Oh, goodness, that is a tough decision! I love them both as well. However, the potential nn [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] for [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] would be a turnoff for me, so I think [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] has the upper hand here.

I dislike the nickname [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] also. [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] would go by her full name. I forgot to say this would be a hypothetical sister to [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. I prefer the other [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] spelling but I’m afraid people will pronounce it Mad e lyn which would clash with [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u].

I feel neutral about [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I adore [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]. [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] or [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] go very well together. I personally would not use a nickname…but I am not much of a nicknamer. If I were to use a nickname, for either, it would be [name_f]Millie[/name_f].

[name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] = mad-ə-lyn
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] = mad-ə-line
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] = ma-də-len

I much prefer [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].
If we end up using [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]/[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], we plan to call her [name_f]Mae[/name_f] as a nn.

I love [name_f]Mae[/name_f] as a nickname although I would probably use the [name_f]May[/name_f] spelling. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]? Is it Mad-eh-lane

I much prefer [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. It is classic, vintage and just plain beautiful!

Phonetically [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] is pronounced Mad-eh-line. Both Names are ABSOLUTELY EXQUISITE, and on my own List, but I think [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] sound slightly better together.

I prefer [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. That’s my daughter’s name!

Both names are just too cute! I have a friend called Josephline (with a L in it) and I call her [name_u]Josie[/name_u] sometimes. I think is a beautiful name. [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] and [name_f]Mae[/name_f] could be perfect nn for [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]! [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], while very pretty, is very popular. That’s not counting all the other Maddies.

I prefer [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]! I like the spelling [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] better, but I love the name in general!

I prefer [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] over [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] but [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] over [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].

OP, the [name_m]French[/name_m] prn of [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] is mad-eh-lehn. With my Aussie accent [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] are pretty much the same.

Definitely [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I like [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] but I think it’s best left as a middle, especially with the nickname [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] being so pervasive.

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]!
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] would inevitably be called [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] at some point. [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is a beautiful, classic name and I’ve yet to hear it mentioned among all the vintage names people are using nowadays. Plus [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] sound great together, as well as the potential nn [name_u]Josie[/name_u], which I love (though that could sway your opinion if you don’t like it). I think [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is cute, but that’s about it. [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] would be a lovely name to grow in to and has real romantic charm.

I think I prefer the [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] spelling. Its a lot less common and is still extremely beautiful. Although I am considering [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], it lacks Madeleines charm.

@brynnhowland has a point, though. Someone would eventually call her “[name_f]Maddie[/name_f]” (which I really don’t like either). Hell, she may even prefer [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] when she gets bigger!

I vote [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. It’s gorgeous, classy, and pretty uncommon, in my opinion. Plus, it goes well with [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. I admit, I’m biased because it’s not just the nn [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] I dislike, it’s the name [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] as a whole that’s just not for me.

From what you just said, though @laransmitt, it seems like you already prefer [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] over [name_f]Josephine[/name_f].

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] in a heart beat. I don’t understand why the name [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is so popular - it has the word mad in it! [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is different and beautiful.

I prefer [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].
