I’m due in about 8 weeks and the name we’ve chosen is [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]. We pronounce it like the character from the book/show, mad-eh-[name_f]LINE[/name_f], rather than the more popular MAD-eh-lyn. We haven’t formally ‘announced’ her name, but her name was on the cake at my shower and friends and family immediately started calling her [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]/[name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]. Now, I know that particular pronunciation is vastly more popular and there are multiple spellings for it, but there is literally no other way to spell [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] to achieve the pronunciation we want so I am not sure what to do. [name_f]Do[/name_f] we just deal with correcting the pronunciation for her entire life? Is she going to resent us for giving her the identical name of classmates but with a different pronunciation? I went to school with girls named [name_f]Lauren[/name_f] and one went by LAWR-en and the other LOR-en, and [name_f]ANN[/name_f]-dree-ah and ON-dree-ah, [name_u]JAZZ[/name_u]-min and jazz-MEEN, etc. and I do know a little girl who has the name [name_f]Mia[/name_f] but pronounces it [name_f]Maya[/name_f]. Is this the same thing? Am I overthinking it? Does our pronunciation work? What do you think?
Both pronunciations are correct. I am afraid you may need to correct people from time to time though, and if by the time she’s older and decides she prefers to be called with -lyn ending, there’s not much you can do. But if it’s really [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] that you love, I say it’s worth thee hassle. It’s a beautiful name, btw.
I went to school with a lot of Carolines, and some were [name_f]LINE[/name_f] and some were [name_f]LIN[/name_f], and sometimes I forgot which were which. I think [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is the same. You will have to tell people which way it is and some will still get it wrong, but it is a nice name!
[name_m]Just[/name_m] reinforce the prn you want
I do think that you’ll probably continue to get both pronunciations, regardless of spelling, but I definitely agree that you should reinforce mad-uh-[name_f]LINE[/name_f]. If someone uses -lyn, just tell them that it is -line. You can’t really help someone reading it and pronouncing it incorrectly, but they should catch on if you are saying it around them.
Correct it for her life, not to sound odd. My name people used to pronounce it as fray-jah, though it’s said freya. The amount of times I’be had to correct people is minor since it’s not too hard to get used to. If Madeline/you told family, friends, teachers (when she starts school) etc it’s said Mad-eh-line they’d get used to it, since it’s not difficult to remember.
Hope this helps
Thanks everyone! I guess it’ll take time, but eventually people will “get” it.
That would be frustrating. [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] pronounced -[name_f]LINE[/name_f] is (imo) so classic and pretty, but somehow, the -lyn pronunciation/spelling just completely ruins the name for me, it looks and sounds so tacky to me tbh definitely be quick to correct friends and family when they mispronounce it, but don’t let their name botching stop you from using the lovely [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]!
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is mad-eh-[name_f]LINE[/name_f]. [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is a gorgeous, classic, charming name. You should not let your friends stop you from using the name you love. They’ll catch on soon enough.
First of all, [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is one of my favorite names because of the books! My dad read them to my sister and I growing up! I would just reiterate the pronunciation and people will get it eventually. I am in a similar boat in that I have a girl due in [name_u]March[/name_u] and the name I love the most, I love the more uncommon pronunciation of it. But I think I am willing to correct people for a name I truly love for my little lady! I want to name her [name_f]Viola[/name_f] but not like the instrument (VEE-oh-la) and not like the actress [name_f]Viola[/name_f] [name_m]Davis[/name_m] ([name_f]Vi[/name_f]-OH-la) but like the Shakespearean character (VIE-o-la). My husband isn’t quite on board yet but I’ve got time
I agree with this.
