Maeve

Tell me how you feel about Maeve. Is it over done already in terms of popularity?
Maeve Diana (middle for my late mother) thoughts?

I equally love May, but I’d really prefer a longer name… I’m not sold on the look of Mae for a nickname but I love the sound… thoughts? Thanks!

I’ve never met a Maeve irl, and only heard about one lo names Maeve. I’m totally obsessed! Because of the mead association, I always think of a butterscotch yellow when I hear it :blossom: I also love all the literal and literary connections to queens. Overall, it’s a very strong and sweet name

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is a great name and I don’t think it’s overdone! I don’t personally know any, but do know it ranks higher in popularity in [name_u]New[/name_u] [name_u]England[/name_u] in the US. I think [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f] is stunning and love that it honors your mom! [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] also fits in great with your other names.

I wouldn’t worry about the spelling of [name_f]Mae[/name_f] as a nn because she’d likely mostly be called [name_f]Mae[/name_f] vs. having it written out (if that makes sense). I also don’t think spelling the nn [name_f]May[/name_f] for [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is that big of a deal if you prefer it. I’ve known a few Catherine’s who go by [name_f]Katie[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]!

I understand your worry about it being overdone or overused. I’ve heard that too and it’s gaining popularity and of course the stats on Nameberry show that too. However, I’ve never met one in person and in fact, I haven’t even heard of any little Maeve’s other than on here.

Pre-current popularity, I first tuned into [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] when I heard it in something about the [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] family, [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] [name_m]Townsend[/name_m], granddaughter of [name_u]Robert[/name_u] [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]. (She sadly drowned a few years ago) I remember hearing the name and thinking how lovely?! It’s friendly and sort of classic meets modern and I had never heard it before. That [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] was older than me, so it felt a smidge vintage to me and I loved the meaning.

It’s been on my radar since then, years ago, and I’ve had the same hesitation as you. Overall, I think go for it! It may be gaining popularity, but doesn’t that just mean you have good taste?! And it could be very geographical too, popular somewhere but not where you are. It fits perfectly with your sibset and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f] is a beautiful combo, I’m a sucker for a family tie!

The irony of the fact that [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] seems so well loved both on here and where I live but its one of those choices which never makes it out of list irl, people I know have considered it but dropped it as a possiblity very soon as they feel like its harsh with the strong vowel sound and its not so positive meaning and spelling/pronounciation issues down the line. Because of this I don’t see it as popular because I’ve never met one irl both old or young even though it was apparently in the UK top 100 of 2021 based on nb.

I still love [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] - warm, strong and friendly

I think it works with your kids

It feels tired to me because of current popularity on naming sites, it’s definitely having a moment, but how much that translates to real life I don’t know. I’ve only ever met one. I’ve always found it quite wet sounding, a bit wishy washy. I love how it looks visually though and the lit and legend associations. It’s one I want to really love and in some ways I feel I should as it’s pretty consistent with my style, but I just don’t. Prefer [name_f]Maeva[/name_f] or Maevie is cute but probably as a nn only.

I think [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is nice! I’ve only met one irl, I don’t think it’s overdone. I think you could use [name_f]May[/name_f] as a nn

I think [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is lovely :white_heart:

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is sweet, has a wholesome sound, interesting mythology behind her, feels bright and fashionable. [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f] has a lovely melodic soft sound and [name_f]May[/name_f] is a sweet nickname. I think [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is having a moment so I would say some could feel that she’s a little over done. However I do I live in an area with a high [name_u]Irish[/name_u] population people seem to be either [name_u]Irish[/name_u], [name_u]Irish[/name_u] traveller or like me have Irish/Irish traveller heritage so of course [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is popular. Whereas my S/O’s family live in an area with a large Afro-Caribbean/Asian community so the name is not popular and names like [name_m]Emmanuel[/name_m] and [name_m]Mohammed[/name_m] are. So I think it’s an individual thing whether or not the name is ‘over done’ I would look at stats of your area to see how popular [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is. Also just attending local parks etc will give you an indication as to how popular [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is. I would also say that if you love [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] don’t let popularity deter you.

Wishing you all the best

I’ve definitely been hearing [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] around A LOT more than I ever used to, and not just on places like name websites. As others have pointed out, there’s a chance it could just be a brief obsession people have with it online that won’t ever really translate to real life, but if personally, I’d just keep an eye on it for a little while and look out for a sudden steep rise in popularity (not sure if this is hypothetical or you’re expecting right now, in which case that wouldn’t really be possible of course). To me, it doesn’t seem like the kind of name that would reach the top 10 and your daughter would be one of 4 Maeves in her grade (though I could be wrong of course), but I’d be more concerned about it becoming trendy in the sense that it’s very tied to the current generation if it does end up having a drastic rise in popularity (for example, [name_f]Maureen[/name_f], [name_u]Stacy[/name_u], and [name_f]Kylie[/name_f] never made the top 10, but if you were to hear about anyone with one of those names in real life, you’d instantly be able to visualize about how old they were).

I do like [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f] as a combo. At first I was a little hesitant about Mae/May as a nickname since [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is already only one syllable, but then I realized there are plenty of other one-syllable names with nicknames, so it definitely wouldn’t be too out there. I wouldn’t worry too much about spelling, nothing feels weird at all to me about [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] n.n. [name_f]May[/name_f].

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] definitely doesn’t feel overdone to me. I’ve only met 2 Maeves irl - one an adult and one was about 9 or 10. I think [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f] is a fantastic combination and one I’ve thought about too (my MIL is Diane)! I think May/Mae as a nickname will be natural and sweet.

Overall, I think you have a stunning combination!
