Maggie's little brother needs a name!

We’re expecting a little boy any day now and still haven’t decided on a name: please help! We have a daughter named [name]Margaret[/name] ([name]Maggie[/name]) and our last name begins with an M. Names we’re considering include:

[name]Miles[/name]
[name]Malcolm[/name]
[name]Lionel[/name]
[name]Declan[/name]
[name]Wendell[/name]
[name]Abraham[/name]
[name]Lucas[/name]

We’ve considered but ultimately rejected [name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]Beckett[/name] – both very nice, but too trendy for us. We like distinctive but classic names that are unmistakably male and (again) not too trendy, and we prefer names that have a good nickname or two. I’d REALLY appreciate your thoughts on the names we’re considering or suggestions of others we may like. Thanks so much!!!

My vote goes to [name]Abraham[/name] because it has it all. It goes great with [name]Maggie[/name], is not very trendy and comes with the NN [name]Abe[/name]. I love it!! [name]Miles[/name] and [name]Malcolm[/name] are nice bt could lock you into an M theme if you have any more children. [name]Lionel[/name] and [name]Wendell[/name] are NMS, they seem very stuffy and old. [name]Declan[/name] feels like a similar type of trendy as [name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]Beckett[/name] to me. [name]Lucas[/name] is nice and would have been my second choice but it does not have a really good NN besides [name]Luke[/name]. I definitely vote for [name]Abraham[/name]

That’s a good point about [name]Declan[/name]. Does [name]Milo[/name] (as a nickname for [name]Miles[/name]) seem that trendy to you? I do really like [name]Abraham[/name], but we are not really religious people – does that matter? Final question: are two alliterative names too much?

I think the alliteration would be a bit much, sorry. But I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Lucas[/name] and [name]Maggie[/name] together. They both sound so classy, but not frilly. Good luck! I hope I helped!

I wouldn’t have said the alliteration was bad but your last name ends in M too…that makes it too much for me.

I don’t think it matters that you’re not religious but like [name]Abraham[/name]. I have a few [name]Christian[/name] religion names on my own list, but i’m not a [name]Christian[/name]. You love the names you love.
That being said, I also think [name]Abraham[/name] goes nice with [name]Margaret[/name]. I like then n [name]Bram[/name] with [name]Maggie[/name].

Others:

[name]William[/name] – nn [name]Will[/name] or [name]Liam[/name]
[name]Joseph[/name] – nn [name]Joey[/name]
[name]Arthur[/name] – nn [name]Art[/name]
[name]Anthony[/name]
[name]Christopher[/name] – nn [name]Topher[/name]
[name]Alexander[/name] – nn [name]Xander[/name] (or [name]Alex[/name], [name]Lex[/name], [name]Alexi[/name], [name]Xan[/name])
[name]Gerard[/name]
[name]Benjamin[/name] – nn [name]Ben[/name]
[name]Nathan[/name]/[name]Nathaniel[/name] – nn [name]Nate[/name] (or [name]Niel[/name], [name]Nat[/name], or maybe [name]Thane[/name])
[name]Theodore[/name] – nn [name]Theo[/name] ( or [name]Teddy[/name], [name]Ted[/name], [name]Thor[/name])
[name]Jonathan[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name] – nn [name]Ollie[/name]
[name]Owen[/name]
[name]Elliott[/name]
[name]Jude[/name]

[name]Do[/name] you like any of those?

I would personally avoid another M name. I don’t think the fact that you’re not religious should affect your naming style.

From your list, I love [name]Lucas[/name].

Here are some suggestions (sorry for any repetition, I’m on my phone so didn’t read previous posters):

  • [name]Oliver[/name] nn [name]Ollie[/name]
  • [name]James[/name] nn [name]Jamie[/name]
  • [name]William[/name] nn [name]Will[/name], [name]Liam[/name], [name]Wills[/name], [name]Bill[/name]
  • [name]Theodore[/name] nn [name]Theo[/name], [name]Thor[/name] (I made this one up, I figured it’s not too much of a stretch)
  • [name]Jasper[/name] nn [name]Jas[/name] or even [name]Perry[/name]
  • [name]Henry[/name] nn [name]Harry[/name]
  • [name]Lionel[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name]
  • [name]Leon[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name] or [name]Lee[/name]
  • [name]Evander[/name] nn [name]Evan[/name]
  • [name]Edmund[/name] nn [name]Ed[/name] or [name]Ned[/name]
  • [name]Joachim[/name] nn [name]Joe[/name]

I really like [name]Lucas[/name] too, but worry that it feels a bit tired. No? Also, does the nn [name]Luke[/name] invite (unwelcome) references to [name]Star[/name] Wars?

Regarding [name]Lionel[/name]: I have seen several references to it becoming an acceptable name for girls because of the novelist [name]Lionel[/name] Shriver. Really? Can you really imagine calling a little girl [name]Lionel[/name]?

My vote goes to [name]Lucas[/name]!

From your list I vote [name]Abraham[/name], but I also like the suggestions [name]Theodore[/name], [name]William[/name], [name]Nathaniel[/name], [name]Benjamin[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], and [name]Edmund[/name]

I combined two of the names you have listed. [name]Abraham[/name] [name]Lucas[/name] or [name]Lucas[/name] [name]Abraham[/name].

I think [name]Declan[/name] in particular is good with [name]Maggie[/name]. It has the same Irish image, it is a handsome name. I also like [name]Lucas[/name] but it is more popular I noticed that one of the pp’s said that you did not want a ‘religious’ name? I think most people think of [name]Abraham[/name] as a very strong biblical name.

Combo of [name]Declan[/name] [name]Neil[/name], very Irish.

I like all of your choices but I think [name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Edward[/name] would be adorable siblings!

I have a soft spot for [name]Wendell[/name]. A name for a gentleman.

I WANT to love [name]Wendell[/name], but I worry that it sounds kind of wimpy. I also worry about the nickname “[name]Wendy[/name].”

Any thoughts on [name]Oscar[/name]? Or [name]Gideon[/name]?

[name]Oscar[/name] works well, [name]Oscar[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] make a good pair.

I think [name]Abraham[/name] is a lovely match with [name]Maggie[/name] and like [name]Nathaniel[/name] as a strong contender with nn [name]Nate[/name]. Good luck!

I’m leaning heavily toward [name]Oscar[/name] (nn [name]Oz[/name]?) at the moment. What kind of person comes to mind when you hear [name]Oscar[/name]? Is the name overwhelmed by too many pop culture associations?

Good I am glad that you like [name]Oscar[/name]. The only child that I ever met named [name]Oscar[/name] was an extremely bright and articulate child.

We have a [name]Miles[/name]. My #1 name pick was actually [name]Malcolm[/name] and got vetoed by my husband, but I still think that is a super cool name, masculine but not overly so, classic, and can be called “[name]Mal[/name]” for short which I find cute. Of course - I do love my son’s name too! Good luck.
