We have been feeling pretty optamistic about either [name_f]Athena[/name_f] or [name_f]Indira[/name_f] for girl #2. We figure although we [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_f]Athena[/name_f] it might just be too similar to our first daughter’s name (Azula [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]). I’ve been trying [name_f]Indira[/name_f] out, though, and I’m not sure that’s the name for us either. Today I saw Marzanna as a suggestion on someone’s post, and now I’m hoping to get some more name suggestions.
I love nature names, and am pretty set on using something “herbal” for her middle name. Our mn frontrunner right now is [name_u]Sage[/name_u].
We love mythology & names that give off a magic/ethereal/natural kind of vibe. [name_u]Corey[/name_u] loves fantasy names too. Nothing overly froufrou feminine - I like our kids to have a little spunk too!
Please, please give your suggestions.
Some names that we like include [name_f]Esparanza[/name_f], [name_f]Saffron[/name_f], [name_f]Valencia[/name_f], [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], [name_u]Zia[/name_u] & [name_f]Coral[/name_f].
For boys, we love [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] & [name_m]Fox[/name_m], & [name_u]Corey[/name_u] loves Ender.
Well, it might’ve been me who mentioned Marzanna - I love this name and it’s one of the names I’m trying to get someone to use, haha. She’s the Slavic Goddess of winter and death (not in a bad way, she resided over death and rebirth in nature, the natural cycle). She’s also called Morena and Marmora. You could also spell Athena Athene, makes it more different from Azula?
Ethereal magic and nature names for little miss Azula’s sister:
Albinia - Etruscan Goddess of the dawn
Chione/Khione - Greek Goddess of snow
Demeter/Ceres - Greek/Roman Goddess of agriculture and fertility, she’s very much associated with winter
Eira - Norse Goddess of healing, it means “snow” in Welsh
Eirawen or Gwyneira - Welsh for Snow White
Eisa - A princess in Norse mythology, “glowing embers”
Ermine - another name for the stoat, usually referred to as ermine in the winter when its fur is thick and white
Hulda - a sorceress in Norse mythology
Huldra - a beautiful forest nymph in Scandinavian folklore
Idhunna/Idunn/Idonea/Idony - Norse Goddess of youth and apples
Laetitia/Letitia - Roman Goddess of happiness
Libera - Roman Goddess of fertility, associated with Ceres and Proserpina and thus would be perfect for a winter baby
Lumi - Finnish for snow
Minerva - Athena’s Roman counterpart.
Ondine - “little wave”, would be perfect if she’s an Aquarius
Rhiannon - Celtic Goddess associated with horses
Rosmerta - Celtic Goddess of healing and fertility
Rowena/Rhonwen - A Saxon princess/Goddess/personification of England
Saga - an aspect of the Norse Goddess Frigg (Odin’s wife)
Snezana - Croatian for snowy
I love [name_f]Esperanza[/name_f], it’s beautiful. [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] is nice - not overly used. Maybe a little dated here in the UK thanks to [name_m]Ab[/name_m]-Fab but that will pass and is probably unimportant in the US. [name_f]Valencia[/name_f] and [name_f]Coral[/name_f] are also great - all nice choices really. With Azula my choice out of those would be [name_f]Valencia[/name_f]/[name_f]Valentina[/name_f].
[name_u]Shilo[/name_u] - I love some of your suggestions! [name_u]Corey[/name_u] has already veto’d [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], & [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]. And our close friends have a daughter only 4 months older than Azula named [name_f]Estelle[/name_f], so that and any other close variants wouldn’t work. I have to think a little about [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] & [name_f]Nova[/name_f], but I do really like them, and I think [name_f]Ceres[/name_f] is wonderful!
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] - Marzanna was totally your suggestion - and it is gorgeous! And would be fitting for our little winter baby. I showed it to [name_u]Corey[/name_u] and he is thinking about it. He says he likes it but it takes some time for names to grow on him. I like [name_f]Athene[/name_f], I’ll see what [name_u]Corey[/name_u] says to that. Your other suggestions are great too, I especially appreciate [name_f]Eira[/name_f], [name_f]Ceres[/name_f] & [name_f]Ondine[/name_f]. I have a book of names just of gods & goddesses but nothing has jumped out at me from there yet. Maybe I ought to go over it again!
Suzywoo - [name_f]Esparanza[/name_f] is one of my favorites too. If we had to pick one from our list (I guess aside from [name_f]Athena[/name_f] or [name_f]Indira[/name_f]) that would be my top choice. [name_u]Corey[/name_u] says he loves the style of [name_f]Valencia[/name_f], but we haven’t found other names that give that same feel.
Sorceress - I have always loved [name_f]Marina[/name_f], but my husband isn’t on board. And I hesitate to use any name that plays off [name_f]Mary[/name_f] since thats my mom’s name and she already has a nod to her with Azula’s mn. If we were going to use some variant of a family name I’d rather spread the love a little.
Personally, I think [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] would be a great complimentary middle name to Azula [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]. Some other names for you to consider:
[name_f]Jacinta[/name_f]- Spanish version of [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f] from the flower and also Greek mythology. The [name_m]French[/name_m] version, [name_f]Jacinthe[/name_f], is also pretty.
[name_f]Laurel[/name_f]
[name_f]Amber[/name_f]
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f]
[name_f]Oriane[/name_f]
[name_f]Clio[/name_f]
Castalia
[name_f]Moria[/name_f]
[name_f]Melia[/name_f]
Aetna
[name_f]Melaina[/name_f]
[name_u]Echo[/name_u]
milo2011- It really is. We had Azula picked out for a girl years before we even conceived, so we didn’t have to stress as much about her name while I was pregnant. [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] as well as being beautiful and earthy and a nod to my mother ([name_f]Mary[/name_f]) gives her a few options ([name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f]) if she decides she doesn’t want to go by the beautiful but unusual Azula. We’d love to give our second child an equally exotic name and a more “down to earth” middle in case she doesn’t want to go by something special and unusual. [name_f]Indira[/name_f] is so pretty and it does really fit the bill, I have just started calling the bump [name_f]Indira[/name_f] the last week or so and it doesn’t feel right just yet. I might get used to it but I’m not confident about it so far. Thanks for your suggestions - I particularly like [name_f]Gaia[/name_f].
lynneinlove - Thanks for your list. I do really love [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] but my husband prefers [name_u]Sage[/name_u] or [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] if we’re sticking with the herbal category. [name_f]Indigo[/name_f] is a great suggestion but I’m thinking it might be too themey for us since Azula is a play off [name_f]Azure[/name_f] (another shade of blue). We do like [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] as well but my husband thinks it might be too “dark”.
mimiottawa- Cool suggestions! I really dig [name_f]Jacinta[/name_f] but am not quite sure how to pronounce it. I looked it up but it seems there are a few variations of pronunciation. My brother’s name is [name_m]Jason[/name_m] & he says if the baby comes on his birthday (which coincidentally is my due date) I should name the baby after him, so [name_f]Jacinta[/name_f] might work if I let him have his way! I quite like [name_f]Amber[/name_f] as a name but I have met too many unappealing [name_m]Ambers[/name_m] to consider using the name for our child. I like [name_f]Moira[/name_f] but [name_u]Corey[/name_u] doesn’t.
Azula & Ender are darling sibling names. Could you see any of the other girl’s names paired with those two?
Azula, [name_f]Indira[/name_f], & Ender- I really like Azula & [name_f]Indira[/name_f] together, but if you have your heart set on Ender for a boy, you could run into a problem as they sound similar.
Azula, [name_f]Athena[/name_f], & Ender- Though I love [name_f]Athena[/name_f], I don’t think it goes! Plus I’m not a fan of repeating first letters.
Azula, Marzanna, & Ender- I think these names sound cool and unique together. Plus I like Marzanna [name_u]Sage[/name_u], longer first with shorter middle; it balances out Azula’s shorter first with a longer middle.
Or you could use Ender/Endry/Endra as a girl’s name!
A name I discovered recently and thought was fantasy/magical is [name_f]Orinthia[/name_f]/Orinthea. I love O names as they’re really unique and rare, and the ending just sounds so magical; [name_f]Thia[/name_f]/[name_f]Thea[/name_f] is a darling nickname. Since you like the name [name_u]Corey[/name_u], you might like Corinthia.
[name_u]Corey[/name_u] is my husband’s name, and we are staying away from similar sounding names (such as [name_f]Coral[/name_f], which is one of my absolute faves). I agree [name_f]Athena[/name_f] is too similar to Azula, as much as it breaks my heart. We decided before we found out the gender that if this baby were to be a boy he would be named [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]. My husband really loves Ender but I think I would prefer it in a middle name spot, as to me it sounds kind of… incomplete, and is tied too closely with the Ender’s Game series for my liking.
Thanks for the suggestions of [name_f]Orinthia[/name_f] & [name_f]Corinne[/name_f]. I love the name [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] but we have a [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] in our extended family already. [name_f]Orinthia[/name_f] is interesting, but it reminds me too much of the [name_m]Auryn[/name_m] in the Neverending [name_u]Story[/name_u] (80’s kid here)!
I do love [name_f]Indira[/name_f], I’m just not sure if its my baby’s name. I wonder if [name_u]Corey[/name_u] would like Endra for a girl… Very cool suggestion. I will see what he thinks of that tomorrow!
I love Marzanna too, I’m hoping it grows on [name_u]Corey[/name_u] a bit- so far he’s only rating it 3/5.
He rated a few of the names out of 5.
Sadly, it looks like Marzanna is out - he only gave that one a 2
Endra he says is about a 3, along with [name_f]Nova[/name_f]
And [name_f]Ceres[/name_f] he gave a 4, but only if pronounced “Sare-es” instead of “Seer-eez”. I don’t know if I would name my daughter something and deliberately pronounce it wrong, so I think that’s a no from me.
