Magical names that would also fit a professional woman?

Thank you Berries for your great help so far. [name]Olivia[/name] is back at the top of our name list, although I still feel it may be a little too close to [name]Amelia[/name]. Same ending, begins with a vowel, three syllables… I so, so want to use it (and my husband is on board), but I still can’t help feeling a little uncomfortable about it. Also, if (unlikely but you never know) we ever have a third daughter, will I be stuck in a pattern?

So, we’re still looking, just in case the perfect name is still out there.

We really love names that have a magical, almost fantasy-like quality to them. With [name]Amelia[/name], we also considered [name]Nolwenn[/name], and now we’re liking [name]Elowen[/name] (well, I am although my husband worries it sounds too much like Halloween…), and [name]Olwen[/name]. We love [name]Arwen[/name] and Eowin, but agree they’re too obviously tied with LOTR. [name]Do[/name] you think any of those names would suit a grown, professional woman? Or are they “too much”? Can you suggest names that would have a similar feel but maybe feel somewhat more serious?

Thank you so much!

  • 2 very confused parents…

[name]Alix[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Charlotte[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Hermione[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Leontine[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name]
[name]Mirabella[/name] nn. [name]Mab[/name] (probably the most frilly)
[name]Olivia[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name]
[name]Perdita[/name]
[name]Petra[/name]
[name]Raphael[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name]
[name]Theresa[/name]
[name]Victoria[/name]
[name]Vivienne[/name]
[name]Wilhelmina[/name]

I am a JAG lawyer (military) who has worked as a lawyer in the hard nosed area of politics and I think [name]Elowen[/name] is a great name for a grown, professional woman. Ditto to [name]Arwen[/name]. I much prefer both over [name]Olivia[/name] and feel that it is a bit too close to [name]Amelia[/name] and also not as special, which [name]Arwen[/name] or [name]Elowen[/name] would be. [name]Elowen[/name] doesn’t at all sound like Halloween to me. Others that seem to suit your taste would be [name]Eloise[/name], [name]Anneliese[/name], [name]Guinivere[/name], [name]Geneva[/name]…

What about [name]Arden[/name] or [name]Eden[/name]?

Thanks! Yeah, I wouldn’t have thought of Halloween if my husband hadn’t brought it up… It’d be nice if he could get over that! And I do like [name]Eloise[/name], thanks.

Of the other names suggested so far, I really like [name]Eleanor[/name] (my husband doesn’t though). I’m not as much a fan of names ending in -den as they remind me of all the [name]Jayden[/name]/[name]Aiden[/name]/[name]Brayden[/name], etc. that have popped up in the last decade…

[name]Melisande[/name]
[name]Morgana[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Sabrina[/name]
[name]Circe[/name]
[name]Elise[/name]
[name]Wisteria[/name]
[name]Thomasina[/name]
[name]Marcheline[/name]
[name]Melora[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Romilly[/name]…

I think [name]Elowen[/name] would be lovely with [name]Amelia[/name]. If you like [name]Arwen[/name] but feel funny about the LOTR association, what about [name]Anwen[/name]? It’s Welsh. Was on my list to honor an [name]Anne[/name] at one point. I think it’s simple and sleek, but also soft and maidenish.

[name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Flora[/name]? [name]Flora[/name] is very simple and professional, but also fun and flouncy and a bit… fairies in a meadow.
[name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Paloma[/name] could be a beautiful pairing (since you’re a fan of the “lo” sound)

Hmm. I think you need something pretty and serious but not so serious that it steamrolls [name]Amelia[/name]. In my opinion, [name]Elowen[/name] works perfectly! How about…

[name]Diana[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Talia[/name]/[name]Thalia[/name]
[name]Rhiannon[/name]
[name]Rosalind[/name]
[name]Ailsa[/name]
[name]Petra[/name]
[name]Fenella[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]
[name]Adair[/name]

[name]Bronwen[/name] was the first name that came to mind when reading your post. [name]Bronwen[/name] in Welsh mythology was the daughter of Llyr, god of the sea. I think [name]Bronwen[/name] would be a very pretty, professional name.

I think all of your names would suffice just fine. The only ‘magical’ names that really wouldn’t fly are the whimsical ones, not the romantic ones (you know, Cobweb or Fairydust or Glow).

theclocktowerofjoy: thanks, I like Melisande and Elise (the latter doesn’t sound good with our last name unfortunately)

geeknamesyo: I loove Rosalind… too bad it sounds somewhat weird in French. :frowning: Thalia/Talia, on the other hand… That one is going on our list I think, thanks!

kyemsma: bronwen is lovely, but it’s another name that sounds kinda weird in French, and I can just imagine my family trying to say it…

blade: hehe, thanks.

I like [name]Elowen[/name] and I don’t think anyone would find that too whimsical…

Some others:
[name]Hera[/name]
[name]Ever[/name]
[name]Saffron[/name]
[name]Tansy[/name]
[name]Sage[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Pearl[/name]
[name]Adia[/name]

I know an olivia and amelia who are sisters. Names are close but they also go by viv and millie so it works.

I too am looking for the same type of name…having trouble…here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
[name]Fairy[/name]( is actually a Victorian name , see Social Security names in 1800’s)(nickname [name]Fee[/name] or [name]Fae[/name])
[name]Willow[/name]
Ellowyn
[name]Cassia[/name]
[name]Pixie[/name] (google Dr. [name]Pixie[/name] [name]McKenna[/name])
[name]Whimsy[/name]

All thoughts and opinions welcome! Thanks!!!

I know I may be biased but I love my name [name]Freya[/name], pronounced FRAY-YAH not [name]FREE[/name]-YAH. The name comes from Scandinavia and is a norse goddess so is somewhat magical, but is ancient and has real meaning.

Zoesmom: thanks, I like [name]Cassia[/name] and [name]Willow[/name].

Freya74: you have a beautiful name. It’s been on my radar for a while.
