Magnolia - automatically nicknamed Maggie?

We are very close to choosing the name [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] with one caveat - we don’t like the nickname [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] at all.

Is it inevitable that people will call her that?

Not if you establish a different nickname early on. I love [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Nola[/name_f]. But if you just call her [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] and leave it open, then yes, ppl may shorten it to [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]…

I agree [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] would most likely get shortened to [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] but if you do start to use the as PP said -it should work. You don’t [name_f]Meg[/name_f] either I guess? As well as [name_f]Nola[/name_f],- [name_f]Lia[/name_f], [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Maia[/name_f], [name_f]Malia[/name_f], or even [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] Agga, [name_f]Agna[/name_f].

The nickname [name_f]Nola[/name_f] is part of the selling point for my husband - he ADORES [name_f]Nola[/name_f], so I think it would be used early on

Bumping this since my husband brought it up again last night!

I think [name_f]Nola[/name_f] is a natural nn for [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]. As pps said, I would just call her that from the beginning to establish it for others.

Good luck!

I went to school with a girl named [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] and she went by [name_u]Noli[/name_u]. I think if you establish a nickname early on, people will call her by the name you choose.

I agree with the others. If she has no nickname, people often feel the need to shorten anything that’s 3+ syllables, and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] or [name_f]Mag[/name_f] will happen. If you tell people it’s [name_f]Nola[/name_f] for short, they’ll embrace that as the nickname. I really like [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], but I love [name_f]Nola[/name_f].

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is a beautiful name and I love the nickname [name_f]Nola[/name_f]!

  1. I agree that if you call her [name_f]Nola[/name_f] from the beginning, most people will go with that

  2. Some people might not comply. People can be weird about kid’s names sometimes. If someone calls her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], how will you react?

  3. She might want to go by [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] as she gets older. Is that going to make you crazy?

If she wanted to be [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], I would be fine. If someone just decided they were going to call her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] when she is little, it will drive me nuts!

My dad kept trying to call my son by a different nickname- he eventually gave up bc my son had no idea that his grandpa was referring to him.

It’ll probably be similar with little [name_f]Nola[/name_f] (just if she has any aggravating grandparents, probably isn’t an issue for you) just make sure and tell people like childcare providers that she goes by [name_f]Nola[/name_f].

I think the “natural” default nn for [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] but if you start calling her [name_f]Nola[/name_f], then others would follow and I can’t imagine anyone calling her [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. [name_f]Nola[/name_f] she’ll be!

[name_f]Nola[/name_f] is way better than [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]! I would never shorten [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] to [name_f]Maggie[/name_f].

I don’t think it would be a problem as you have a substitute nickname, [name_f]Nola[/name_f] (which is lovely!), instead - as [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] is rarer than [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], I wouldn’t expect that you would get the same instant assumption that her nickname is [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] as you would if it were [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. Does that make sense?

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Meg[/name_f]?

Yes, I can definitely see that!
