So since I was a little girl I wanted to name my son [name_u]Flynn[/name_u], which is my maiden name. It’s meaningful to me and I love it. The problem is, my married name is [name_m]Fleming[/name_m]. I know I could use [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] as a middle name but I’ve just been set on using it as a first name for too long. I’d love to hear some of your thoughts/suggestions on this.
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Fleming[/name_m] does sound very sing-songing and it’s a little much for me but it’s not the worst. Would [name_u]Finley[/name_u] [name_m]Fleming[/name_m] ‘[name_u]Flynn[/name_u]’ work? [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] also has a similar sound
[name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Fleming[/name_m] is a tongue twister. Ultimately it’s up to you, but I think [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] might be better as a middle unfortunately.
I think that while [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Flemming[/name_m] isn’t ideal it could work.
There’s always the option of naming him (First Name) [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Flemming[/name_m] and having him go by his middle name, or naming him [name_u]Finley[/name_u]/[name_u]Florian[/name_u]/[name_m]Finnian[/name_m]/[name_m]Fingal[/name_m] and calling him [name_u]Flynn[/name_u].
Honestly, I don’t know why people have a problem with “sing-songy”. I think it feels distinguished, like a personal brand. A lot of famous people have alliterative “sing-songy” names. i.e [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u] [name_m]Reynolds[/name_m], [name_m]Mike[/name_m] Myers, [name_u]Kris[/name_u] Kristofferson, [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] [name_m]Chaplin[/name_m], [name_m]Hermann[/name_m] Hesse, [name_m]Ozzy[/name_m] [name_m]Osbourne[/name_m], [name_m]Alan[/name_m] [name_f]Alda[/name_f]. I think when most people hear these names, they think that they’re impactful and memorable rather than weird (except maybe for [name_u]Kris[/name_u] Kristofferson). I think sometimes when thinking about names so much, we can get a little hung up on the “rules” and it would be a shame for you to pass up something with so much meaning for you just because of that.
I would still use it. You’ve had your heart set on [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] for years, and the personal connection it has for you is hard to top! Plus, [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] is just an all-round fantastic name.
I can understand your hesitation, but I think [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Fleming[/name_m] is actually quite cool and memorable. Thumbs up from me.
Compared to a name like ‘[name_u]Michael[/name_u] [name_u]Michael[/name_u]’, I’d say [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Fleming[/name_m] is actually not that bad.
It also sounds like a name people would remember.
I will say that it sounds a bit like ‘flim-flammery’ though…
I like it. And besides, it’s not everyday the full name is used.
What about a middle name in between?
For instance; [name_u]Flynn[/name_u] [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Fleming[/name_m]
Ok I don’t know if that even is a nice middle name, but you see/hear how it’s more balanced now?
Ugh, thats a difficult position to be in. I totally understand the emotional connection you would have to [name_u]Flynn[/name_u].
I will say, I want you to use it, but I’m with other posters that mentioned “flimflam” and the tongue twist element. However, I think the family significance is so valuable.
Thank you all for your feedback and suggestions! It was helpful reading through all of your comments We’re leaning towards going with it and going with [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] (also a meaningful name in our family) for a middle name to break it up. Thanks again!
