Main Character All Named....How I/We Do?

I’m almost finished the primary and the important secondary characters in this huge series I’m working on. Its fiction set in the future. There are humans, vampires, warewolves, and other creatures. I’ll go through the characters and what I’m not sure about. Please mention if you’re not feeling a certain name and why. Thanks. Sorry if this might be a little long.

*Note: The operatives are sort of what the Death Dealers are in the Underworld movies.

There you go.

[name]Carly[/name] [name]Roark[/name]…I’m not sure about the last name. I was thinking [name]Roberts[/name] instead. Any other suggestions?

I am also not sure about the brothers [name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Gabriel[/name]. They have been a nightmare to name. I’m wondering if I should go with something more common around the 1900’s, but at the same time I want them to be unique. Thoughts on them would be helpful too.

I actually quite like [name]Carly[/name] [name]Roark[/name], more so than [name]Carly[/name] [name]Roberts[/name]. It adds a little bit more…spunk? If thats the right word.

I’m not a fan of the names [name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Gabriel[/name]. I don’t mean to add more doubt as I understand your predicament, and went through the same phase with the novel I’m writing at the moment. So…

I quite like [name]Everett[/name] instead of [name]Tristan[/name], but it might be a bit too soft for the character. You could always look at puritan/colonial names like [name]Boaz[/name], [name]Asa[/name], [name]Gamaliel[/name], [name]Nathaniel[/name], [name]Silas[/name], [name]Lemuel[/name], [name]Alden[/name] and [name]Elias[/name]. I think nameberry has a list of them.

[name]Gamaliel[/name] sounds a bit mysterious out of those names and [name]Lemuel[/name], [name]Asa[/name] could be arrogant and [name]Boaz[/name] a bit macho.

I hope that helps!

@sunshine kid…thanks for responding. I’m not sure what is off with the 2 brothers, but It’s been a nightmare naming them. I can’t settle on a last name. I love the name [name]Gabriel[/name] and it suits both characters. The meaning of [name]Tristan[/name] fit the vampire brother.

Of the names you suggested, [name]Boaz[/name] is interesting. I don’t want to go too out there (for lack of a better word) as I don’t want readers to get tongue-tied. LOL. [name]Everett[/name] isn’t too bad. I’m not sure I want another ‘E’ name though.

[name]Do[/name] any of these work? I’d be willing to change the surname too.

[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Samuel[/name]
[name]Alfred[/name]
[name]Michael[/name]
[name]Lewis[/name]
[name]Clyde[/name]
[name]Luther[/name]…love this one
[name]Norman[/name]
[name]Patrick[/name]
[name]Horace[/name]
[name]Guy[/name]
[name]Ira[/name]
[name]Maurice[/name]
[name]Lonnie[/name]
[name]Nathan[/name]
[name]Gerald[/name]
[name]Mark[/name]
[name]Roland[/name]
[name]Grady[/name]
[name]Leland[/name]
[name]Troy[/name]
[name]Byron[/name]
[name]Rex[/name]
[name]Ruben[/name]
[name]Marcus[/name]
[name]Dean[/name]

Out of all of those I really like [name]Marcus[/name] for one of the brothers. I love its ancient vibe that can transition so well into the modern world and it means warlike-would that work?

Actually I have had another rethink about the name [name]Gabriel[/name], and I think it would work well with the setting. I think its just [name]Tristan[/name] that bothers me, I haven’t seen the appeal. But I quite like [name]Marcus[/name] and [name]Gabriel[/name] together, perhaps switch them around? [name]Marcus[/name] can be the human operative and [name]Gabriel[/name] the vampire?

I like the surname [name]Sinclair[/name], should be fine. =]

I honestly probably wouldn’t read a book with a main character named [name]Carly[/name].

I do like [name]Vivian[/name] and it’s meaning.
I also like [name]Ray[/name] [name]Valentine[/name].

I’m not fond of the names [name]Gabriel[/name] or [name]Tristan[/name] but I like [name]Sinclair[/name]. I like [name]Luther[/name] and [name]Ruben[/name]. [name]Jasper[/name]? [name]Cyrus[/name]? [name]Gideon[/name]?

I like all of the surnames you’ve picked except for Brethour.

Looove [name]Carly[/name] [name]Roark[/name]. I think it’s fine, wouldn’t change a thing - maybe [name]Rourke[/name] as a spelling if you’re unhappy? Curious to why kala_way wouldn’t read a book with a main named [name]Carly[/name]… the names of main characters don’t really put me off though (unless her name is [name]Alyvia[/name] [name]Grayce[/name] and she’s supposed to be a 19th century midwife or something).

I agree about [name]Tristan[/name] and [name]Gabriel[/name]… they both seem a little bit off to me. Maybe a little cheesy? Like they’re both gorgeous names for two gorgeous, immortal men. I feel like since they’re described as being so handsome maybe their names should be slightly more grounded and closer to their century. I looked up the top 1000 from as far back as the SSA would take me and picked out [name]Theron[/name] and [name]Simon[/name]/[name]Lawson[/name]. There are some real gems in there if you look

I guess [name]Carly[/name] is just one of those names for me. To me it’s a babysitter’s club name like [name]Tiffany[/name], [name]Crystal[/name], or [name]Marcy[/name].
I would just find it hard to take seriously a character who dealt with vampires and was supposed to be “walking amoungst the homeless covered in blood”, when their name was [name]Marcy[/name]. [name]Carly[/name] is just too…teenage cheerleader turned soccer mom.

I like [name]Marcus[/name] and [name]Gabriel[/name].

Actually the meaning of [name]Carly[/name] is important to the story and the name really fits the character. [name]Carly[/name]'s mother is [name]Arlene[/name] and her childhood was not good. She ran away from home at 16. Her mother was an alcoholic, and slept around and was beat up a lot. [name]Carly[/name] ran away and thought a life on the street would be better. The streets is all she knows and when she gets involved with this underground supernatural organization it changes her life in more ways then you can imagine and some are for the better. They clean her up, educate her, teach her to fight…give her the family she never had but all at the price of her freedom.

If not [name]Carly[/name], what would you suggest?

I like all your suggestion for the boys especially [name]Luther[/name] and [name]Ruben[/name].

Thanks. I like the ‘e’ added to [name]Roarke[/name]. “More grounded”…you are right. I love [name]Theron[/name], but am not sure about [name]Simon[/name] since I have a [name]Simone[/name].

According to some other naming sites, [name]Theron[/name] means “hunter”. I like it. The meaning behind [name]Simon[/name] fits the human brother. [name]Simon[/name] and [name]Theron[/name]…ummm. I like [name]Theron[/name] [name]Sinclair[/name] but not sure about the double ‘s’ with [name]Simon[/name].

I can change the witches name from [name]Simone[/name] to something else. I have some back-up names for her. LOL

I don’t think [name]Simon[/name] [name]Sinclair[/name] sounds too bad. I actually kind of like the rhythmic quality it has, but then I have an alliterative name that has a similar rhythm, so I’m biased. And really, how often are you going to refer to him in writing as [name]Simon[/name] [name]Sinclair[/name]?

[name]Glad[/name] you liked the suggestions though! I couldn’t believe [name]Theron[/name] was used way back when when I saw it on the SSA list but it was there, along with a few other gems for boys ([name]Pink[/name], [name]Emma[/name], or [name]Fate[/name] anyone?) that shocked me. I just love the name though, and the meaning is a good fit so I’m glad you like it.

For some reason reading your description of the witch I thought of [name]Euphemia[/name] “[name]Effie[/name]” for her name, but as she’s only 21 that probably wouldn’t make any sense. Thought I’d throw it out there anyway though. Good luck!

hmmm…yea, I get what you mean. Not sure I’m in love with other options with the same meaning either.
Honestly I’d prefer [name]Charlie[/name] (from the same root), but I don’t know how you feel about boys names for girls.
[name]Amadi[/name] also has the same meaning. I think that’s pretty, but then I have a friend named [name]Mari[/name] (pn Maw-dee).
Then there’s [name]Liberty[/name] ([name]Libby[/name]) which is probably too obvious.

You could use nn [name]Sim[/name]. Not popular, but I’ve always thought it was interesting.

[name]Leander[/name] was on the SSA too. I like that name as well.

I don’t mind [name]Charlie[/name]. Probably her name would be [name]Charlotte[/name] (nn. [name]Charlie[/name]). The last name [name]Roarke[/name] fits too. Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll ponder it and just may change it.

Historically, [name]Vivian[/name] has been a masculine name. Only since 1859 would [name]Vivian[/name] have been used as a feminine name. 1000+ years ago she could have been a [name]Viviana[/name] but she wouldn’t be a [name]Vivian[/name]. Unless [name]Vivian[/name] is an alias?

Good job, though. I like all the other names, they seem to suit the characters.

@amberdaydream…thanks for the info on [name]Vivian[/name]. I didn’t know that.

I love all the other names but [name]Simone[/name] [name]Bennett[/name] - it sounds really familiar to me but i’m not sure why?

What about [name]Simone[/name] Lukaas / [name]Nikolai[/name] / [name]Bernard[/name]?

Also [name]Vivian[/name] [name]Crawford[/name]?

Suggestions:

[name]Dominque[/name] [name]Crawford[/name]
[name]Lavinia[/name] [name]Crawford[/name]
[name]Catriona[/name] [name]Crawford[/name]
