Maisie's full name?

Hello!

My husband and I agree that we both love the name [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], but I want her to have a formal name with the nn [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]. I would love some feedback on the two we are considering (which honor family members)from people outside our daily “discussion!” We are considering [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]. If we go with [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], her middle name will be [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. If we go with [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] her middle name will be a Finnish family name. Thank you!

I like [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]!

[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] doesn’t sound like a nickname for [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f].
I would have thought someone with either of the names you’re considering would go by [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] or something.

I would expect [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] to be a nickname for something like [name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_f]Mae[/name_f], [name_f]Maya[/name_f]/[name_f]Maja[/name_f], [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] or [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]. Since [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] sound so similar, I would just use [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as the nickname.

But to answer your question: [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is my favourite option, but [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] is also lovely. And maybe where you live, [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] would work just fine as a nickname for [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. It might just be that it doesn’t make sense to me… : )

Yeah sorry but I agree with grackym. If using [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] as the nickname, I really like [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] or [name_f]Mae[/name_f]. But if I was to choose out of your two options [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] gets my vote!

I actually think [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] works best since it has the m- and -ais sound of [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]. Very cute! I think any ‘m’ name could get the nickname [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] really. [name_u]Marion[/name_u] is one.

My dogs name is [name_f]Maisy[/name_f] (not to be made as an insult, I think the name is adorable). I call her [name_f]Maisy[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f], both of those names mean pearl and both of those names are supposedly derived from [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], I’m not sure how, but that’s what I’ve read. You could call her [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] as the “full” name.

[name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is traditionally a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], so if you want a formal name as you say, I’d go with [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. However, if you plan on only calling her by her nickname, why not go straight to [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]? I don’t see why it can’t stand alone as a first name. I’m not really fan of either [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], sorry.

I think they both work! I like [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] for [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f], since you don’t have to look far to find where the ‘maze’ comes from. So I vote [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] (Finnish family name).

[name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] works too and might flow better, depending on the family middle.

I would use [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. I wouldn’t use [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Mary[/name_f].

[name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] would be my choice.

A nickname is a nickname - it might be a conscious choice or can develop organically over time. I do know that [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] has always been a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], but who’s to say that in YOUR family it can’t derive from [name_f]Mary[/name_f]?
What concerns me is a hyphenated first name which is a bear to deal with on forms throughout ones life. So my vote is to name her [name_f]Mary[/name_f] with two distinct middle names of your choosing and call her [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] as you wish.

Traditionally, it’s a nickname for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] I think? So any [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] related name would work. Also, any name that begins with a ‘[name_f]May[/name_f]’ sound, or [name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_f]Mae[/name_f] itself.

Out of the names you’ve listed I prefer [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]. [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] doesn’t seem like a nickname at all for [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and I think it’s lovely to use a middle name from another language for a middle name if you have a connection to it.

I like [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] best but I do think [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] can work for either.
I have [name_f]Maxina[/name_f] (family name) nn [name_f]Maisy[/name_f] on my list. A nickname is a nickname, it really only has to make sense to you and your SO.

I quite like it for [name_f]May[/name_f]/[name_f]Mae[/name_f] or [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], if you don’t like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
Or for [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] /[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] (where the second names are middles), if you feel the hyphenated names are too long.

Some other places to look, if you haven’t already:

I would also want to have a more formal name for [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]. I think it’s an adorable nickname, but I do still see it as more of a nickname.

I think [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] is more obviously connected with [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] (the M from [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and the “ais/az” sound from [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]) so I like that option! I’m also drawn to the idea of the Finnish family middle name (even without knowing what it is!) that goes with this name choice.

I agree that [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] makes the most sense but [name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] could be a good alternative too. I believe it’s biblical though so something to consider depending on how feel about that. [name_f]Maisie[/name_f] is a very cute name. Good luck!
