I seem to be one of those people who is overly subject to popular opinion, and have become increasingly indecisive. I would love it if someone could make me a name, based on my favourite first and middle choices.
First names: [name]Katherine[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Josephine[/name]
I like other names as well (and since I’m all over the forum, I’m sure everyone knows the kind of names I like). For a very long time [name]Seraphina[/name]/[name]Seraphine[/name] was my favourite, but it has become too popular and I fear it will be associated with this decade ([name]Katherine[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], and [name]Victoria[/name] are also overly popular, but not as 21st Century as [name]Seraphina[/name]/[name]Seraphine[/name]). I love [name]Ophelia[/name] and [name]Octavia[/name], but partner just laughs at both. [name]Cordelia[/name] is, aesthetically, my very favourite, but the stripper (and [name]Buffy[/name] the Vampire Slayer) associations are just too strong.
So, based on the list of first and middle names, what would you go with? I’d love opinions on all of my choices, but most importantly, some combos.
And oh dear, I knew of the association with [name]Buffy[/name] for the name [name]Cordelia[/name], but I didn’t realize it had been associated with strippers. [name]Cordelia[/name] is one of the names I like and was considering using for a middle. I was getting leery because every time I’d mention it [name]IRL[/name] someone would automatically make the [name]Buffy[/name] association. [name]Octavia[/name] is another name I really like, and I don’t think it’s a bad association per se, but it is the name of one of the characters on My [name]Little[/name] Pony Friendship is [name]Magic[/name]. I don’t think your average adult [unless they are a brony] is going to make that connection, but little kids might.
What about [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Victoria[/name], [name]Katherine[/name] [name]Alexandria[/name], or [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Lavinia[/name]?
You know it, but I’ll say it again, I love your taste in names!! My boyfriend laughs at me too when I suggest [name]Ophelia[/name] and [name]Octavia[/name]… (and he studied literature and history so he should be into those names, but no…)
If you’re worried about popularily, I would choose [name]Lavinia[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name]. I also love [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] or [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name].
Wow, @lori johnson! That’s about the best response anyone has ever written - ever. Thank you so much! I love all of the feedback, particularly on so many extra names I utterly adore.
Thanks - I really like [name]Lavinia[/name] [name]Josephine[/name], but I think [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Lavinia[/name] is more usable. And @[name]Ottilie[/name]: I know! [name]Ophelia[/name] and [name]Octavia[/name] are beautiful, I don’t know why so many people laugh at the thought of them.
I notice that on the list I posted, [name]Alexandria[/name] seems to be the least popular. [name]Do[/name] you know why that is? Along with [name]Victoria[/name] and [name]Lavinia[/name], it’s one of my favourite names, but for some reason [name]Victoria[/name] is so much more popular than either [name]Lavinia[/name] or [name]Alexandria[/name], and [name]Lavinia[/name] is just kind of in the middle. Anyone have any thoughts on these names? I’m so much more decisive with first names - I stick with classics in the first position, but middle names seem to be the place you can be daring. I feel like the middle has to be extra special.
Nice ones! I love [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Octavia[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Victoria[/name], [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Alexandria[/name] and [name]Katherine[/name] [name]Lavinia[/name].
I am thrilled to hear that [name]Cordelia[/name] doesn’t have the same negative connotations on this board as it does where I live, because I love it. [name]One[/name] of my favourites. I’m putting it back on my list.
I love [name]Josephine[/name] in the first spot. I like [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name], [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Victoria[/name], [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Alexandria[/name] or [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Octavia[/name].
So far, I have [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Octavia[/name] in first place, [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Alexandria[/name] in second, and [name]Katherine[/name] [name]Lavinia[/name] and [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Lavinia[/name] tied for third. Much appreciated, everyone.
If I had to name a little girl using your top 3 first and middle name ideas, the name would be:
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Lavinia[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] is my favourite of your first names. It’s an underused classic with a vintage feel, literary connections and lots of nickname options. Not to mention I just love it, such a pretty name!
I feel like all 3 of the middles could work with [name]Josephine[/name], but [name]Lavinia[/name] seemed to roll of the tongue the most.
Other combos that jump out at me:
[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Alexandria[/name] (beautiful and princessy)
[name]Katherine[/name] [name]Victoria[/name] (very regal!)
I am also on board with [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Lavinia[/name] - though I don’t see why [name]Lavinia[/name] is any less usable than [name]Olivia[/name] or [name]Victoria[/name] - all the same amount of syllables, all have V’s, all end in -ia…
I didn’t mean that it wasn’t usable, I just think the -ia names (which, of course, all my favourites are) work better as middle names. I like to go with strong first names, like [name]Katherine[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Josephine[/name], [name]Genevieve[/name] ([name]Georgiana[/name]? It’s another one I love), and softer, more feminine middle names (like [name]Lavinia[/name], [name]Victoria[/name], [name]Alexandria[/name], etc.). That is just personal opinion - and knowing that soft, feminine names have an unfortunate bias against them in universities and the professional world.
[name]Ah[/name], ok - that makes sense. I still vote [name]Josephine[/name] as a first name. I adore [name]Georgiana[/name] as well, but I prefer the geor-jay-na pronunciation, though I doubt most people would follow through with that if I choose to use it.
