I love the name [name_f]Gunhilda[/name_f] and if I had a baby girl right now, her name would probably be [name_f]Gunhilda[/name_f]. I love it so much and it just makes me smile every time i think of the name and I love the very very [name_m]German[/name_m] sound.
I’ve tried to make myself hate it, but I can’t, I know that 100% my child would be bullied for the name, but i just love this name so much. please make me hate it.
I don’t want you to hate a name!
However, I personally don’t like [name_f]Gunhilda[/name_f].
What I can think of to help you dislike it is that, in the name there is the word ‘gun’. Is that what you want in your child’s name?
Some alternatives (mostly very German) I like better that seem to fit with your theme to help:
[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Valhalla[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Gretchen[/name_f]
[name_f]Margarethe[/name_f]
Leisl
[name_u]Or[/name_u] just plain [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] is beautiful and has a nice meaning (battle woman)
Did this help at all??
[name_f]Gunhilda[/name_f] isn’t that bad of a name though, you could just call her [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]. Personally I wouldn’t name my kid [name_f]Gunhilda[/name_f], but if you like it as an honor name, it works. [name_f]Brunhilde[/name_f] / [name_f]Brunhilde[/name_f] is less a target bullying name I think though.
I can’t help but imagine that there are better ways to honor your father than by using a name with ‘gun’ in it. That’s a hard no from me. It’s a sound that’s deeply unpleasant and deeply violent.
I agree that it has some lovely other sounds, a [name_m]German[/name_m] strength, and a gravitas!! Perhaps you’d enjoy…
love [name_f]Brunhilde[/name_f], and yeah it’s an odd honor, but it’s literally the only thing my dad enjoys so it feels like a decent honor name for me. and I love the violent sound of it, don’t ask me why. but I love it.
I’m not really to concerned with how it sounds, i love the violent town of it, it sounds like a bond villian to me. and I also am not to concerned with finding a sibling name because sibling names don’t have to be the same sort of name imo
I’m not sure anything anyone says will make you hate it - if you’re not concerned about the gun /gun holder association (in fact see it as a good honour for a parent); the likely confusion and teasing with nickname “Gun”; and/or dont mind the general intensity and lack of familiarity of the name (in English speaking context), then I can’t see any grounds for you not using the name, let alone hating it?
I like the Hild Old German names - Gunhilde wouldn’t be a pick for me though but I’m not sure you need to hate it, just be aware of the risks of harm in using it.
All I see is “gun”, and I know it’s an honor for your dad because it’s a pastime of his… but doesn’t he have a name you could use? Like, if his name was [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] and he liked guns, maybe think of something like [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] or [name_f]Natalia[/name_f], instead of [name_f]Gunhilda[/name_f]. I think by the time you’re ready to have children, the love for [name_f]Gunhilda[/name_f] will most likely have faded.
his names is James… it’s so common that I hate it. and I’ve loved [name_f]Gunhilda[/name_f] for like five years. and I’m trying not to like it because if I use it I’ll be disowned by my moms family, but that might not be enough to make me not use it. I just love it so much
Names that have “gun” in then are pretty common over here, even if lots of parents are now deciding against it, thinking their child could want to visit an English-speaking country some time. So over here a [name_f]Gunhilda[/name_f] would fit right in with [name_m]Gunnar[/name_m], [name_f]Gunvor[/name_f], [name_f]Gunnel[/name_f], Gun-Britt, Gunborg, and plain [name_m]Gun[/name_m].
Why not think about other names that have to do with a weaponry collection?
[name_f]Adalgisa[/name_f]
[name_u]Archer[/name_u]
[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]
[name_u]Axton[/name_u]
[name_m]Bow[/name_m]
[name_m]Caliber[/name_m]
[name_u]Corin[/name_u]
[name_f]Deren[/name_f]
[name_f]Geraldine[/name_f]
[name_f]Gladiola[/name_f]
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u]
[name_u]Huntley[/name_u]
[name_f]Ivara[/name_f]
[name_f]Trudy[/name_f]
[name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe something that has father in the meaning, like
[name_f]Abigail[/name_f], [name_u]Abby[/name_u], [name_f]Gail[/name_f]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f], [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Otilia[/name_f]
And if his name is [name_u]James[/name_u], what about:
Still [name_u]James[/name_u] (but on a girl)
[name_u]Jamie[/name_u]
Some other language version of [name_u]James[/name_u], like [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] or [name_m]Diego[/name_m]
Honestly it does feel a bit strange that people where I live have been deciding against gun-names just in case their child ever goes to the US or UK or whatever, and then English-speakers themselves still go for it
imma be completely honest here— when i first saw it i was like no. but it’s really grown on me and i do also like the warrior sound. it reads german/and a bit norse/scandinavian to me and i do like it for that
