Malin - WDYT?

This is my first thread here, and I have to say…I am SO pleased I discovered these forums tonight!

Finally, a place to indulge my love of names with people who understand!

We’re not sure of the gender of our baby yet, so we’re currently discussing both boy and girl names - we’re trying to settle on a top choice for both. I [name]LOVE[/name] so many names, but have found it surprisingly hard to settle on one that I love enough to consider using.

I love unusual names and would hate for my child to share a name with another child in class, but I also don’t want to subject them to any bullying - its also important to me that their name has meaning to us.

So - we’ve come up with [name]Malin[/name].

The reason is threefold - firstly, I grew up on a street called [name]Malin[/name] which is where my parents still live. I like the idea of honouring my upbringing.
Secondly - it means “little warrior” which is ideal, as her starsign will be aries.
And finally - my grandmother was known as [name]Mal[/name].

We like the combination [name]Malin[/name] [name]Rose[/name].

I’ve never actually met a person named [name]Malin[/name] (we live in the UK), and I have only heard it used by the actress [name]Malin[/name] Akerman and a singer in the 90s pop group [name]Ace[/name] Of Base!

Thoughts?

My first thought was [name]Malin[/name] Akerman. I find it really attractive, stunning, actually–sort of like [name]Maren[/name], but much more striking. [name]How[/name] do you say it? I always assumed it was [name]MAY[/name]-lin, but now that I think of it, I’m probably wrong. [name]Malin[/name] [name]Rose[/name] is very pretty! [name]Rose[/name] is usually filler, but it is a nice name, even nicer if it has significance behind it.

Good luck!

Thanks! I’ve heard it pronounced Mah-lin, but we would pronounce it the same way as the name of my street was pronounced which is just as its spelt … just Ma-lin  (Ma as in Map, [name]Lin[/name] as in [name]Caitlin[/name]…sorry I’m rubbish at explaining pronunciation lol!)

I find [name]Malin[/name] very appealing and the personal connection makes me like it for you even more! I thought of the actress straight away, but imo that’s not such a bad thing & I think hearing it said aloud would make me connect it to her less.

I think this is one of those names that is very rare, but not bizarre. I love that. The only negatives I’m seeing is pronouncation. Does it rhyme with [name]Allen[/name] or is it [name]May[/name]-lynn?

Yay, I’m so pleased people seem to like it  I quite like [name]Malin[/name] Akerman anyway but luckily she’s not really a household name here in the UK, whenever I’ve mentioned her to people I have to explain who she is lol.

I do think pronounciation will be an issue, but so few names that I like are without that problem (I have a thing for Irish names!) - its pronounced like [name]Allen[/name] but with an M! (Thats a MUCH easier way of explaining it than my previous attempt! lol) xx

[name]One[/name] of my university professors is called [name]Malin[/name]. While it isn’t something I’d personally choose I think its sweet and pretty

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Malin[/name]! So beautiful! x

There is actually a girl at my kids school named [name]Malin[/name]. I think its spelled Mahlin (they are sleeping or else I would ask). It’s said the same way and is cute and fits her. So I do like it on another persons child too. Good luck!

I like [name]Malin[/name] a lot, it’s very sweet  Prn. is Mah-linn, with stress on both syllables, kind of like [name]Phoebe[/name].

It’s very cute, very swedish! it’s pronounced mah-linn.

Thanks all!

We’d be pronouncing it like [name]Allan[/name] with an M, as its meant in tribute to the street I grew up on - which takes its name from a place called [name]Malin[/name] Head in [name]Ireland[/name], so its a different pronounciation from the Swedish name

I first thought it was [name]May[/name]-[name]Linn[/name] also. [name]One[/name] of my middle name choices for a boy is [name]Mahlon[/name] (pronounced similarly) to honor my husbands grandfather so I automatically loved the name, although I never thought of it as a girls name…I like that it is original, I just always try to think of how most people are going to pronounce it and whether she is going to always have to correct people or not
