Hubby and I are having a hard time choosing between [name_m]Malone[/name_m] or [name_m]Dawes[/name_m] for a boy’s first name. I REALLY like [name_m]Malone[/name_m], but it seems to be used more as a girl’s name. Does it really sound more like a girl’s name and is it becoming popular as one? We don’t want him to be one of the few boys in a world of girl [name_m]Malone[/name_m]'s. But I still like it more than [name_m]Dawes[/name_m]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_m]Malone[/name_m] or [name_m]Dawes[/name_m] for a boy?
It would depend on your last name but if they are both nice combined with your ln, then I prefer [name_m]Malone[/name_m]. I haven’t heard the name on either a boy or a girl so I don’t have an opinion as to whether it’s unisex or not. It sounds like a boy’s name to me.
I’ve never heard [name_m]Malone[/name_m] as a girls’ name, and I think even if it is being used as a unisex name, it’ll be a while before there are more girl Malones than boys. I went to school with a lot of female Ashleys and one male [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] and it never bothered him, we all knew it was a unisex name and that was that.
I’m not keen on [name_m]Dawes[/name_m] at all, sorry, it just doesn’t have a great ring to it and I worry it would lead to teasing like ‘front doors’, ‘back doors’ etc.
I like [name_m]Dawes[/name_m], but that’s my personal preference. I’m a big fan of one-syllable boys names that end in ‘s’ whether it’s the first or middle name. I also tend not to care for names along the lines of [name_m]Malone[/name_m], like [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] and [name_f]Mallory[/name_f]. But again, just my opinion.
I think what pebbles320 said could be a consideration, depending on where you live and how [name_m]Dawes[/name_m] would be pronounced. In the U.S., I don’t think teasing would be as much of an issue.
Honestly, I’m not a fan of either name. If i had to choose, I would pick [name_m]Dawes[/name_m].
I prefer [name_m]Malone[/name_m] to [name_m]Dawes[/name_m], though neither are all that exciting for me. I’ve never met a girl [name_m]Malone[/name_m] and have never heard of it being used for a girl, I think it’s definitely masculine.
I like [name_m]Dawes[/name_m] over [name_m]Malone[/name_m] for a boy. Reminds me of the name Dobbs I heard the other day for a boy and I like that one too.
I would pick [name_m]Malone[/name_m] out of the two. I’ve never heard of it until now, so I think your son is safe. I have definitely never met a female [name_m]Malone[/name_m], although it is a little reminiscent of [name_u]Malin[/name_u]. I don’t care for [name_m]Dawes[/name_m] at all; it immediately makes me think of the [name_m]Dawes[/name_m] Act of 1887, which was not a good moment in U.S. history. I find [name_m]Dawson[/name_m] much more appealing.
[name_m]Malone[/name_m] over [name_m]Dawes[/name_m] for me. [name_m]Dawes[/name_m] makes me think of dolls for some reason.
I love them paired as in [name_m]Dawes[/name_m] [name_m]Malone[/name_m]!
I prefer [name_m]Malone[/name_m]. The only place [name_m]Malone[/name_m] ranks is in [name_f]France[/name_f], where it’s #216 for boys. So I think you’re fine there.
[name_m]Malone[/name_m] by a mile. Never met one of either sex.
Thanks for the vote (and I agree)!
Thanks for the input, everyone! You all brought up some good points and I appreciate your opinions!
