I would like to know others opinions on [name_f]Marah[/name_f] which would be pronounced like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. My mom has fallen for this name and I like it as well. I also like the traditional pronunciation of [name_f]Mara[/name_f]. I am starting to have second thoughts on it.
I would pronounce [name_f]Marah[/name_f] as mah-ruh instead of mer-ruh. If you want it to be pronounced like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], I would suggest maybe altering the spelling to Merra?
I prefer the pronunciation of [name_f]Mara[/name_f]. I think I would say [name_f]Marah[/name_f] that way too, because [name_f]Mare[/name_f]-uh just doesn’t sound right to me. I do think you can spell it with an h though and pronounce it the same as [name_f]Mara[/name_f], if it’s the look you like. Like [name_f]Nora[/name_f]/[name_f]Norah[/name_f].
I would spell it [name_f]Mira[/name_f] (rhymes with [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]). I [name_f]Love[/name_f] it and it was on my list. It is lovely. [name_f]Marah[/name_f] is a bit difficult and I think people would pronounce it incorrectly.
I’d instinctively say MAH-rah, not [name_f]MARE[/name_f]-ah. Also, I think the former pronunciation is nicer.
I think this is a good idea, or maybe [name_f]Maira[/name_f]. The common pronunciation of [name_f]Mara[/name_f], I feel, would be more often given to [name_f]Marah[/name_f].
I’d pronounce as follows:
[name_f]Marah[/name_f]: [name_f]MARE[/name_f]-a (like dare)
[name_f]Mara[/name_f]: MAH-ra (like car)
[name_f]Maira[/name_f]: [name_f]MARE[/name_f]-a (like dare)
Merra: MEH-ra (like the start of meg)
[name_f]Mara[/name_f] is my favourite.
I think [name_f]Marah[/name_f] is nice. Yes, people will mispronounce it sometimes, but it’ll be easy to correct them by saying “it’s like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] with an M”. I have the same trouble with my daughter’s name, “it’s like [name_f]Laura[/name_f] with an M”, but I knew I would when I picked it. It was still worth it to me. [name_f]Mara[/name_f] is nice too, and a little more straight forward as far as pronunciation is concerned, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. Go with whatever you like best.
I think @thatkathryngirl has a point but [name_f]Maura[/name_f] is a legit name that people can’t pronounce correctly. I haven’t come across [name_f]Marah[/name_f] with the [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] pronunciation before. (Not saying it’s not legit, I’m just saying it’s much less common.) I’d suggest looking for a very different spelling that is much more indicative of the sounds you want. I’d probably go with [name_f]Maira[/name_f] or Mehra.
