Margaery or Margery (honour Garry)

Help me decide!! We’re TTC later this year and definitely using honour names, so I’m thinking more about usable combos now.

I know lots of berries will prefer the spelling Marjorie, which definitely has a lot of vintage appeal. But I’m specifically thinking about Margaery or Margery as a honourific for my dad Garry, as both the Margaery and Margery spellings contain the same letters as his name!

I know some might find the Margaery spelling overly complicated, but the surname would be similar to Cleary and I think there’s something oddly pleasing about the ea/ae in each name;

Margaery Cleary
vs
Margery Cleary

Anyway, please help me decide which spelling, where it goes and what it should go with?

  • What do you think of the name overall?
  • Which spelling do you prefer of the two?
  • Do you like it as a first, or just as a middle?
  • What names would you pair it with? Either from my list below, or something else.

Anya, Asha, Bellamy, Bronte, Cassia, Claudia, Clementine, Clover, Della, Delphine, Edie, Elke, Elowen, Emiliana, Emmeline, Esmé, Estée, Eve, Fable, Honor, Imogen, Jessamine, Juniper, Juno, Lena, Linnea, Maeva, Marianne, Marlowe, Mieke, Morwenna, Nell, Neva, Olive, Orla, Ottilie, Pippa, Rumer, Serena, Soleil, Sylvie, Tallulah, Temple, Tess, Una, Willa, Xanthe

PS: We would like to use the name June (middle name of both of our grandmothers and birth month of many family members), so strong contenders would be: Margaery / Margery June or Juno Margaery / Margery

PPS: One of my favourite celeb baby names is Scout Margery, so would love suggestions with a similar vibe!

  1. I think [name_f]Margery[/name_f] is beautiful vintage choice.
  2. I prefer [name_f]Margery[/name_f] since it looks more appealing to me and has more history behind it. It also looks more like [name_u]Garry[/name_u].
  3. I like it as a first name!
  4. The combos I thought of are [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Nell[/name_f], [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Tess[/name_f], [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Una[/name_f] and [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f].

  2. I think [name_f]Margery[/name_f] is the most intuitive to pronounce, and feels like a more direct honour imo
  3. I think it’d be great as a first, but lovely as a middle too!
  4. [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Nell[/name_f] jumps out to me! I also like [name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f], [name_f]Anya[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f], [name_u]Fable[/name_u] [name_f]Margery[/name_f] / [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_u]Fable[/name_u], [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Bronte[/name_f] and [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f]

I like the spelling [name_f]Margery[/name_f]! [name_f]Margaery[/name_f] looks a bit odd to me tbh. It’s a nice, vintage name overall. Feels warm and bright. I like it as either a first or middle. Maybe [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]?

@fearlessfirefly I didn’t think of the [name_f]Margaery[/name_f] spelling being one more letter away from [name_u]Garry[/name_u] / looking less like [name_u]Garry[/name_u], but that’s a really good point so thanks for picking that up! [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Nell[/name_f] and [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f] are particularly lovely too.

@Greyblue Thank you, I’m very fond of [name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f] as well!

@planetnames Interesting, that’s another vote for [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Nell[/name_f] and [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Willa[/name_f] then! I’m really happy to see you like [name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f] too. [name_u]Fable[/name_u] is lovely with her also, in either spot.

@ethelmary Thank you! I adore [name_f]Eve[/name_f], so happy to see someone suggest it. It’s another honour name for us too, as his grandmother and my great-grandmother both had the name [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (one first, the other middle).

The other combos I am enjoying are:
[name_f]Anouk[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f]
[name_f]Della[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunday[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f]

Would love some more thoughts on [name_f]Margery[/name_f] and ideas for combos

I like the [name_f]Margaery[/name_f] spelling because of GOT, but [name_f]Margery[/name_f] was the more popular spelling for the name for a long time so I say go with it,

[name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] is a delight!

I wouldn’t add the e in there as it looks displeasing to me.

@18_25 I think the [name_f]Margaery[/name_f] spelling is more usable because of GoT too, but I also like that [name_f]Margery[/name_f] is a genuine spelling that has been in use in [name_f]England[/name_f] since the Middle Ages.

@Harvest-Endellion Thanks! I can’t decide if I like [name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Margery[/name_f] or [name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] more. Yes, without the ae definitely seems to be the consensus.

I love [name_f]Margaery[/name_f], it’s been on my list as well. For the same reason, to honour my grandfather, [name_u]Gary[/name_u] and grandmother, [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
It’s funny because I love the spelling [name_f]Margaery[/name_f], but when I heard the name at work from a customer, I immediately started writing the common spelling of Marjorie… :woman_shrugging: so it made me question myself.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] your list! Some combo ideas:
[name_f]Anya[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u]
[name_f]Delphine[/name_f] [name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] [name_f]Orla[/name_f]
[name_f]Clover[/name_f] [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f] or [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] Esmae/Esme
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] (Della) [name_f]Rumer[/name_f]
[name_f]Jessamine[/name_f] [name_f]Delta[/name_f]

I think [name_f]Margery[/name_f] is a lovely name, it seems solid and versatile, while still being a little bit flowery. I thought I liked the [name_f]Margaery[/name_f] spelling better- because I agree with it being pleasing with the last name- but I agree with others that if [name_f]Margery[/name_f] is most historied AND more like [name_u]Garry[/name_u] its the winner.

I think it’s gorgeous as either a first or a middle. Some of the other names you seem to like have a bit more “spunk” than [name_f]Margery[/name_f], so if you are planning for additional kiddos [name_f]Margery[/name_f] might stand out as more classic than siblings like [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Clover[/name_f] and [name_f]Rumer[/name_f]. But [name_f]Margery[/name_f], [name_f]Claudia[/name_f] and [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] sound well matched.

I don’t particularly like the nickname “Marg” so I would be picking a middle name to set up a logical alternative nickname. [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] is a good option too.

[name_f]Margery[/name_f] Juno/Juniper “MJ”
[name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] “Mim” or “Mari”
[name_f]Margery[/name_f] Isla/Ingrid/Indie/Ida “Mari”
[name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] 'Mel"
[name_f]Margery[/name_f] [name_f]Emme[/name_f] “Mem”

@river_dweller I love that you’re looking at Margaery/Margery to honour a [name_u]Garry[/name_u] too! I also have a great-grandmother [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], so it’s an indirect honour there too.

Yes, but I think the spelling might be a generational thing? We automatically think of [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] because it was popular during the era of parents/grandparents, but I think the name will be more unfamiliar to children today so if they met a [name_f]Margaery[/name_f] in their class, they’d probably only know that spelling?

There’s so many unique spellings of modern names now, I don’t know if I’m too bothered by it. Certainly not if it’s in the middle!

I was looking for [name_f]Margaery[/name_f] combos specifically, but I love [name_f]Anya[/name_f] [name_u]Scout[/name_u] and [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] anyway, so thank you!!

@mistymorning It’s a shame [name_f]Margaery[/name_f] isn’t established as I do like it visually too, especially with the surname. But you’re right, [name_f]Margery[/name_f] is the more historied choice and a closer match with [name_u]Garry[/name_u].

Yes, I think from a sibling perspective, I would be inclined to go with [name_f]Margery[/name_f] in the middle. As a first, it doesn’t really fit with our style in names otherwise. If we did, I like your suggestion of using the middle name to fashion a good nickname though! Although I’m really fond of [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] anyway.

Thanks for the thoughtful and helpful response!

Very true, about it being generational.

[name_f]Margaery[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] was on my list
