Margaret and her variations, nicknames and honoring

Lately I’ve been in love with [name]Margo[/name]. I also like [name]Margery[/name]. But then yesterday I started loving [name]Rita[/name]. [name]Rita[/name] is a diminutive of [name]Margarita[/name]. I know there are a million other [name]Margaret[/name] nicknames, and I like almost all of them. Sadly, I don’t really love [name]Margaret[/name]. I do like it, but not enough. It was my husbands great-grandmothers name, so I was thinking of using it, although she’s not high on the list of people to honor. But then I thought maybe [name]Margo[/name] could honor her, if so, I could use it as a middle name. If not, she’d only be up for first name, and that’s a lot harder space to get, though I do love [name]Margo[/name] as a first name. [name]Rita[/name], on the other hand, was my great-aunt. She was a super amazing lady and I would [name]LOVE[/name] to honor her

I’m having sort of the same issue with [name]Elizabeth[/name]/[name]Eliza[/name]. [name]Ruth[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] was his grandmother who he was really close with, we’d love to honor her. I love the name [name]Elizabeth[/name], but only in the middle. However, I also love [name]Eliza[/name], but I’d want that to be a first name. But do you think [name]Eliza[/name] counts to honor her? What about [name]Kate[/name] for a [name]Katherine[/name] who goes by [name]Kitty[/name]? [name]Lucy[/name] for [name]Lucretia[/name] who goes by Creety?

See, my problem is that I have a lot of rules. I want to be equal in honoring, especially because we’re using two middles. Also, I’m a little obsessed with sibsets. [name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] doesn’t work for me, neither does [name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name]. [name]Dash[/name] and [name]Margo[/name], though? Or [name]Dash[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name]? Fab!

Wow. I certainly do go on and on. Sorry about that.

As you said [name]Margo[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]
[name]Meg[/name]
[name]Maggie[/name]

Sorry all i can think of! :frowning:

[name]How[/name] about [name]Dashiell[/name] & [name]Daisy[/name]? [name]Daisy[/name]'s a nickname for [name]Margaret[/name] through the French form [name]Marguerite[/name]. [name]Dashiell[/name] & [name]Rita[/name] work for me, though. Sexy little [name]Rita[/name]! I adore [name]Rita[/name]. (too bad it makes him sing the Beatles tune). [name]Margery[/name]'s my favorite of the Marg- names. I have her on my lists with the potential [name]Daisy[/name] as a nickname.
[name]Lucretia[/name]/[name]Lucy[/name]'s on my list so I’d say it’s a valid replacement for [name]Lucretia[/name]/Creety.

What’s wrong with [name]Elizabeth[/name] up front? [name]Elizabeth[/name], nn [name]Eliza[/name] would be fantastic as a sister to [name]Dash[/name]! Me, I’d use [name]Elisabeth[/name] (my family spelling) and call her [name]Bess[/name]/[name]Bessie[/name] or [name]Lily[/name] (for Grandma). But [name]Elizabeth[/name] works prefectly as a sister to [name]Dashiell[/name]. And [name]Eliza[/name]'s much better as a nickname, in my book. Too unsubstantial as a full name, for me!

I agree with your [name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Dashiell[/name] assessement, [name]Lyndsay[/name]. I love [name]Lola[/name]'s [name]Daisy[/name] suggestion, which made me think of [name]Maisie[/name]. Hmm…

I, for one, have no problems with updated relatives’ names when it comes to honoring or memorializing. (In fact, I’m simply named after my grandma’s initials.) [name]Pam[/name] and [name]Linda[/name] wrote a blog entry about it, and they deemed it a perfectly acceptable practice, which was a relief to hear!

Personally, I love [name]Eliza[/name], and think it’s a perfect way to honor an [name]Elizabeth[/name]. (And like [name]Lola[/name], I think [name]Elizabeth[/name] works as a first name with [name]Dashiell[/name], too!) [name]Eliza[/name], though, is one of my all-time favorites. If it’s too nicknamey for you (it’s not too nicknamey for me), you could always name her [name]Elizabeth[/name] and call her [name]Eliza[/name]. [name]Libby[/name] is another darling nickname.

For me, as long as the name base, initial, or even symbolism is there, that’s all that matters!

I’m also a fan of [name]Libby[/name], though one of my favorite students was called [name]Lila[/name] as a nn for [name]Elizabeth[/name]. [name]Lovely[/name]. I’m not a big fan of [name]Eliza[/name]; I think [name]Lizzie[/name] is cuter and more approachable. I also know an [name]Elisabeth[/name] called [name]Ellie[/name].

For [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Maisie[/name] is an outstanding choice. [name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]Maisie[/name]-- precious. There’s always [name]Meg[/name] or [name]Greta[/name] as nn options too.

[name]Lola[/name]- I do love [name]Daisy[/name]. My problem is that I would never be able to choose what I love most! I really love [name]Rita[/name], I’m not sure I’m brave enough to use it in first, and I’m having a hard time fitting it in the middle anywhere. I’m trying, though! It’s not that I don’t like [name]Elizabeth[/name] as a first, I always wished it was my name, actually. I just feel like such a classic doesn’t work with many of the other names I like, and I plan on having a few kids, and I want all the names to complement each other. I’m not making sense. It’s just that my taste is mostly quirkier, so I don’t think I could have, say [name]Dashiell[/name], then [name]Elizabeth[/name], then [name]Harvey[/name]… you know?

[name]Jill[/name]- [name]Eliza[/name] is one of my all-time favorites, too! So spunky, while being classy. Unusual but familiar. I like that I’ve only ever met one [name]Eliza[/name]. Not too nick-namey for me, though it would be great as a nickname for [name]Elizabeth[/name], too. [name]Libby[/name] is my second favorite [name]Elizabeth[/name] nickname! Now that you mention the initial thing, I realize that [name]Rita[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] Lulette would be the same initials as my husbands grandmother… what do you think of that combo? I’m not sure…

[name]Melissa[/name]- I have never heard [name]Lila[/name] for [name]Elizabeth[/name]! I adore [name]Lilah[/name] (with the h)! I do like [name]Lizzie[/name], but my name is [name]Lyndsay[/name], and the sound is just way too similar!

[name]Elizabeth[/name] is sounding better and better by the minute. But how could I choose between [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Lilah[/name]?

[name]Eliza[/name] is definitely on my list, and its relatively low ranking (it’s in the 300’s) is just an added bonus. I just love that name, and it’s been on my list since I was a fetus.

I love [name]Lila[/name], too, as it’s so purty. [name]Lilibet[/name]/[name]Lily[/name] have historically been used as [name]Elizabeth[/name]'s nicknames (even the [name]Queen[/name] was called [name]Lilibet[/name]!), which makes me think that [name]Lila[/name] could be an Elizabethian nickname, too.

[name]Lila[/name] is definitely more popular than [name]Eliza[/name], so that could be one decision-making factor. Which sounds better to you? [name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name], or [name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]Lilah[/name]? If I forced you to choose [name]Eliza[/name], would you be mourning [name]Lilah[/name], or if I made you choose [name]Lilah[/name], would you be mourning [name]Eliza[/name]'s loss more? Which would you mourn more? Be true to yourself, because that’s your answer. Get dressed in all black, see which name’s funeral is more depressing, and go with that one.

[name]Dashiell[/name] and [name]Eliza[/name] is too stunning for words. Wow. (Random thought: [name]Eliza[/name] could also be [name]Elizabeth[/name]'s nickname.)

I’m going to go to the game board now and test my rules-following abilities.

Deciding between [name]Eliza[/name] & [name]Lilah[/name] is easy, you wait til you see her. I’ve mentioned this before but [name]Josephine[/name] has had a half dozen nicknames since birth and they’re still morphing as I type. She’s been [name]Fifi[/name], [name]Effie[/name], [name]Posie[/name], [name]Josie[/name], [name]Poppy[/name] & [name]Fina[/name]. She informed me tonight (just an hour ago) that she is [name]Effie[/name]. So it starts again!

I have cousins named [name]Elisabeth[/name] & [name]Elizabeth[/name] (one on each side of the family) and the [name]Elizabeth[/name] one is just [name]Elizabeth[/name]. Call her anything else and she’ll kill you. [name]Elisabeth[/name], OTOH is a [name]Libby[/name] now but as a toddler she was [name]Lily[/name] ([name]Just[/name] like Grandma) as a little kid she was Lilbet and as a teen, [name]Eliza[/name]. She’s [name]Libby[/name] these days but her mom recently told me she’s thinking of [name]Elisa[/name]; but yeah, [name]Elizabeth[/name]'s can morph, daily, if they want. So [name]Lilah[/name] or [name]Eliza[/name] are equal chances. You could call her both, [name]Eliza[/name] and [name]Lilah[/name], on alternate hours or days. [name]Elizabeth[/name] is an awesome name, with awesome options. My problem with [name]Elisabeth[/name]/[name]Elizabeth[/name]? Can’t enforce one easily. There are so many options, she could pick one a day for almost a month and if she decided that neither [name]Eliza[/name] or [name]Lilah[/name] worked for her in say, middle school? Would you be okay with that? I know I’d have problems. (which is why [name]Elisabeth[/name]/[name]Elizabeth[/name] is not on my lists).

For popularity sake, I think I prefer [name]Eliza[/name] to [name]Lilah[/name].

[name]Eliza[/name] [name]Margot[/name] is a lovely name incorporating both [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] in a modern, but not out there, kind of way.

I also love your [name]Rita[/name] idea as a first name – [name]Rita[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Rita[/name] [name]Marguerite[/name].

I love the name [name]Margaret[/name] nn [name]Maisie[/name]! [name]Margo[/name] and [name]Rita[/name] and [name]Daisy[/name] are all so pretty, too. I need to put [name]Margaret[/name] on my favorite girls’ list!

Maybe Marquart pronounced [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-quet
