I’m on the fence with [name]Margaret[/name]. On one hand I think it’s sweet (especially with the NN [name]Greta[/name]), on the other I think it’s rather overdone and boring, and that I might as well just use [name]Greta[/name] on its own. As much as I love [name]Greta[/name], I feel like I need a longer, more substantial name for her to fall back on. What are your opinions…[name]Margaret[/name] NN [name]Greta[/name], or just [name]Greta[/name]?
Classic all the way.
[name]Margaret[/name] nn [name]Greta[/name] is beautiful.
[name]Margaret[/name] makes me think of an old lady.
[name]Greta[/name] or Gretle is cute though
I think [name]Margaret[/name] is a beautiful, timeless classic - you can’t go wrong. Might as well use [name]Margaret[/name] and give her all those nickname options when shes older.
I find [name]Margaret[/name] preferable to [name]Greta[/name]. [name]Margaret[/name] has many nicknames and she could grow up to prefer another one to [name]Greta[/name].
If you find [name]Margaret[/name] too boring, [name]Morgana[/name] and Megara are similar-sounding. And [name]Margery[/name]/[name]Marjorie[/name] started as a nickname for [name]Margaret[/name] but is longer and seems more substantial than [name]Greta[/name]. Some nicknames for [name]Margaret[/name] (such as [name]Meg[/name]) could apply to [name]Margery[/name] too.
boring and don’t get how you could call her greta.
[name]Greta[/name] does sound unfortunately like “grater” to me. [name]Margaret[/name], I just can’t bear. It’s one of my most detested legitimate names, unpleasant in sound and association - [name]Thatcher[/name], anyone?
[name]Greta[/name] is another form of [name]Margaret[/name]. It is commonly used as a NN for it.
I’m not a huge fan of [name]Greta[/name], but [name]Margaret[/name] is lovely! Such an underused classic, (which surprises me)!
Classic, unique and elegant, can have some great nick names too!! [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Margo[/name], [name]Meg[/name], [name]Gretta[/name]
I never though of associating it with [name]Thatcher[/name] until the person above suggested it! I don’t think thats anything to worry about, especially if you’re in [name]America[/name]!
I’m in the minority. I much prefer [name]Greta[/name] on it’s own.
[name]Margaret[/name] is a classic, but if you think it’s too plain, you could consider a different full form - [name]Marguerite[/name] and [name]Margaretta[/name] are favorites of mine, and with the latter, [name]Greta[/name] is even more intuitive as a nickname, as well as having the possibility of [name]Etta[/name].
Definitely classic. Classic, simple, and elegant. And I’ve never heard the nn [name]Greta[/name], but I love it! Added to the other nickname possibilities, it makes all the more reason to use [name]Margaret[/name].
[name]Margaret[/name] is growing on me! I used to find it quite old-fashioned and boring, and the only [name]Margaret[/name] I knew was very prim and proper and a bit prissy, haha, I don’t know how to explain her personality, haha, but I didn’t find [name]Margaret[/name] flattering on her at all. But then I recently read this awesome novel with a [name]Margaret[/name] in it, and I absolutely loved her character! And [name]Margaret[/name] has so many lovely nicknames–I’m coming to see it as a charming classic. And [name]Mae[/name], [name]Maisie[/name], [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Meg[/name], [name]Greta[/name], [name]Mari[/name], [name]Ari[/name], etc., are all such charming nicknames!
[name]Margaret[/name] is a classic name, but the obvious nn to me is “[name]Maggie[/name]”. [name]Greta[/name] could definitely be a nn, but it sounds like you really like the name [name]Greta[/name] , in which case you should use it as a first name. Why not? It sounds pretty. I even like [name]Gretta[/name] =)
I love [name]Margaret[/name]! As it had been said in past posts, it is truly timeless, and way under-appreciated. I love how distinctly feminine it is, without being frilly - when I hear [name]Margaret[/name], I think of an intelligent and poised young woman. And [name]Greta[/name] is a great, fun nickname, which also doesn’t get a fair amount of spotlight (as said above, [name]Maggie[/name] tends to be the regular choice, but I find [name]Greta[/name] much preferable). I have a preference myself to using [name]Margaret[/name] as the full name, and [name]Greta[/name] as a nn, in case she absolutely turns out to not be a [name]Greta[/name] (I must admit, it is somewhat of an “acquired name”), given the situation that she becomes more of a [name]Margot[/name] or [name]Maggie[/name] or [name]Gretchen[/name] or [name]Mimi[/name] or [name]Molly[/name] or [name]Mamie[/name] or [name]Mae[/name] or [name]Mags[/name] or [name]Mary[/name] or [name]Meg[/name].
I love [name]Margaret[/name]; I think it’s a beautiful classic, and it has a lot of nickname options. Besides [name]Greta[/name], there is [name]Meg[/name], [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Margie[/name]… and someone mentioned [name]Mae[/name] in a previous post, which I adore. I would go with [name]Margaret[/name] so she has more options.
I like [name]Greta[/name], [name]Maggy[/name], and [name]Meg[/name]. [name]Margaret[/name]…okay, not wild, but with the nn potential I say it’s still a solid choice.
If I didn’t have an awful association with the name, I think I might quite like [name]Margaret[/name]. I just can’t get the devil-child out of my head.
I’m really starting to love [name]Margaret[/name], too. I guess I don’t understand why people are endlessly enamoured of [name]Elizabeth[/name] (which really is overused to saturation point, despite being a beautiful name), but not [name]Margaret[/name]. As a ‘revived classic’, it’s a ton prettier than some of the other names that get a lot of love on here, like [name]Gwendolen[/name], [name]Gwyneth[/name], [name]Margot[/name], [name]Gloria[/name] (ugh). All just my opinion, obviously.
That said, I love [name]Etta[/name] the best. And if I wanted to use [name]Greta[/name] (which is lovely), I’d just use that by itself.
