Margaret or Margot?

What do you like better?

[name]Margaret[/name]: I like that it’s classic, will never sound too trendy or too dated. I like all the nickname possibilities (we will probably go with [name]Greta[/name], but I also like [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Daisy[/name] and [name]Mamie[/name]). It was my great grandmother’s name, so there is a family connection. The only real negative is the popularity issue.

[name]Margot[/name]: I love how it’s refined and spunky sounding at the same time. I love the connection to Dial M for Murder and other old movies. I like that it’s more unusual but not unfamiliar. I worry that it will eventually seem dated and I wish there were some nickname possibilities.

What should we go with?

[name]Daisy[/name] is a nn option for [name]Margaret[/name]???

[name]Both[/name] lovely names, I like [name]Margot[/name] better. Very cute and will grow well with her.

Definitely [name]Margaret[/name]. She can always go by [name]Margot[/name] as a nickname, and why not give her options?? [name]Margot[/name] is, traditionally, a nickname for [name]Margaret[/name] and not a name by itself. Besides that, I’ve always loved the name [name]Margaret[/name] and find [name]Margot[/name] reminiscent of maggots.

[name]Margaret[/name]! It’s so pretty and sweet, and I love [name]Greta[/name]! [name]Margot[/name] is harder to take seriously, and all I think of is calling out “[name]Margot[/name]” on the playground and having all the children shout back “polo!” [name]Silly[/name], I know.

Definitely [name]Margaret[/name] nn [name]Margot[/name].

[name]Margot[/name]. One of my [name]FAVORITE[/name] names. I love it for most of the same reasons as you do. It’s really great!

[name]Margot[/name] is my favorite. very pretty and I dont think it dates at all…

[name]Margot[/name] without a doubt!! Much fresher and easier to use on a child but will age wonderfully well and I don’t think it will ever sound dated in a sea of Addisons, Maddisons, McKenzies and Rileys!!

I have to tell you I have always been very happy that my father chose my middle name and named me [name]Margot[/name]. It is a lovely name and has a totally different vibe to [name]Margaret[/name].

I have always felt that [name]Margot[/name] is a sophisticated name and I love the ballet dancer [name]Margot[/name] Fonteyn.

I fully support anyone who wants to name their daughter [name]Margot[/name].

[name]Margo[/name]

[name]Margot[/name]. Sounds classier and more feminine than [name]Margaret[/name].

I really like [name]Greta[/name], [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Daisy[/name], and [name]Margot[/name]… probably in that order, but I think they’re all good names for a little girl. She’s probably going to be the only [name]Greta[/name], [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Daisy[/name], or [name]Margot[/name] in her class, so they’re uncommonly used names, but still well known enough that no one is going to think twice about it.

[name]Maisie[/name] is also a nickname option for [name]Margaret[/name] that you didn’t mention. It’s from [name]Mairead[/name] which is a version of [name]Margaret[/name]. It’s a name I also love, and since you mentioned [name]Daisy[/name] I thought you might like it.

So since there are so many great possibilities, I say name her [name]Margaret[/name], so she can choose her own name when she get’s old enough. You can call her [name]Margot[/name] when she’s born, and if she decides she doesn’t like it when she’s older she can try out one of the others.

Yes, it is, but in a sort of convoluted way. The French version of [name]Margaret[/name] is [name]Marguerite[/name] which happens to be the French word for a daisy.

Also I think [name]Daisy[/name] is about the only flower name left that doesn’t sound tired or weird.

[name]Margot[/name]

Thanks for all the votes! It’s so evenly divided! I was hoping for a clear favorite to help us make us our minds, but it’s good to know that either way, she’ll have a great name!

[name]Whitman[/name]: Thank you for the suggestion of [name]Maisie[/name]! I love that name, in fact, I loved it so much, it was the name of my childhood cat. It’s too bad I had such good naming taste at age 8 that I took a name away from one of my children! Our other childhood pets were named “[name]Winnie[/name]”, “[name]Milly[/name]”, “[name]Sally[/name]”, “[name]Chloe[/name]”, “[name]Henry[/name]” and “[name]Bruno[/name]”. I may have totally picked differently if those names were still available to me!

I prefer [name]Margaret[/name] to [name]Margot[/name].
I don’t know why, but I just don’t like [name]Margot[/name]…
I guess [name]Margaret[/name] is ok”.

I think [name]Margaret[/name] is one of the prettiest names, and in fact it’ll be the middle name of my little girl!

I love the nickname [name]Greta[/name]. [name]Margot[/name] never really caught on with me. But, if you really love it, it would be a cute nickname for [name]Margaret[/name]!

I can see the beauty of each, but much prefer [name]Margaret[/name] and its trove of nn to [name]Margot[/name].

[name]Margot[/name] always reminds me of ‘Escargot’ which makes me think of slimy snails. : (

I would prefer the spelling of [name]Margo[/name] to [name]Margot[/name], but I maintain that [name]Margaret[/name] trumps either. : )
