Margot/Margaux?

[name]Hi[/name].

I’m the one who thought it was spelled Margeaux. But, like I said, I’ve never taken a single French lesson in my life (as opposed to the Spanish, [name]German[/name], Greek, Latin lessons), so what do I know?

I am a strong believer in, it’s your kid, name it what you want.

However, someone said it’s not a made up spelling. Maybe it’s not, but this is what behindthename.com has to say:

Variant of [name]MARGOT[/name] influenced by the name of the wine-producing French town. It was borne by [name]Margaux[/name] [name]Hemingway[/name] (1954-1996), granddaughter of author [name]Ernest[/name] [name]Hemingway[/name], who had it changed from [name]Margot[/name].

Looks like it was not the original spelling, if you care about that sort of thing?

Hey mermuse! [name]Hope[/name] you weren’t offended when I used your post to point out that a lot of people want to spell it with the -eaux ending! Since you posted, another person on this thread did the same thing, so it is a pretty common error!

Isn’t ‘aux’ the masculine plural way to spell things in French? Like belle/beau/belles/beaux? Or is that only in certain cases? I’m not sure, I’m just taking French in school, so I’m not a native speaker. Either way, it seems very off to me, and I have to admit that it does have a bit of a pretentious feel, like the -aux was added to make it seem more unique and ‘different’, when it isn’t even much of an established name in French. Of course, there are worse things than being seen as pretentious.

I also think there are a lot of people who have absolutely no idea of French pronunciation and would pronounce it like ‘mar-gott’ or ‘mar-gox’, which I, for one, would find annoying. As for the name itself, I’m not really a fan; I would use [name]Margaret[/name] and have [name]Margo[/name] as a nickname. I know someone in real life who does this, and as far as I know it works fine for her.

As a [name]Margot[/name] I can absolutely guarantee that you will never get any teasing about the name and definitely not anything to do with maggot. I would call anyone who wanted to go down the maggot path a complete ignoramous.(Not trying to offend anyone but it makes me want to scream when I hear that connection and I have never heard it anywhere except on naming forums).

I find it incredible in this multicultural world that anyone would not know that [name]Margot[/name] is the genuine French spelling and automatically think [name]Margo[/name] when saying it. [name]Margot[/name] is a stand alone name not just a nn for [name]Margaret[/name].

I agree with the other poster who called it an elegant name. I would absolutely hate to be called [name]Margaret[/name] I think it is such a harsh, clunky name. One reason I like [name]Margot[/name] so much is that people don’t shorten it.

If you prefer the [name]Margaux[/name] spelling and use it on the understanding that you know it is a region of [name]France[/name] then go ahead but I love my name [name]Margot[/name] and think it is classy and elegant.

[name]Love[/name] your name, rollo, and so glad to hear that you like it! As for people not knowing how to pronounce [name]Margot[/name], I was once an aide in a classroom while the children were reading ‘The Diary of [name]Anne[/name] [name]Frank[/name].’ The teacher would read chapters aloud and would constantly say ‘[name]Mar[/name]-gott.’ I was so horrified and it was all I could do to keep my mouth shut! On Yahoo Answers one OP who was asking about [name]Margaux[/name] assumed it was pronounced ‘[name]Mar[/name]-goo.’ Unfortunately, ignorance is a pretty common state of being!

(Poster - Sorry for jumping into your post and not posting about something completely relevant!)

[name]Rollo[/name], you’re a [name]Margot[/name]? [name]How[/name] did I not know that? And, more importantly, why have I been thinking your name was [name]Caroline[/name] all this time…? Hm. Now that’s an odd one.

Thanks for giving your tried-and-true account of the maggot teasing phenomenon. I decided not to comment on that part of the thread because I’ve honestly never thought of it myself, and I’ve never heard any of the [name]Margo[/name]'s and [name]Margot[/name]'s I’ve known teased with “maggot,” so I didn’t know what to say. To those who have experienced this, I’m not trying to discount that.

Anyway, [name]Rollo[/name], nice to hear from you!

[name]Lemon[/name]

PS @phoebesmom - Are you kidding me? Why didn’t you shout out, “It’s [name]Margot[/name], you fool!” Ha. I probably wouldn’t have done that either.

[name]Hi[/name] lemon my name is [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Margot[/name] and I answer to both names eg my DH calls me [name]Margot[/name] but my Sis calls me [name]Caroline[/name] I think I am very well named and very happy that both of my names are used on a daily basis.

phoebesmom thanks for the compliment re my name.

[name]Margo[/name]/[name]Margot[/name]/[name]Margaux[/name] are all pronounced the same way (margo) so go with your heart and pick the spelling you prefer. [name]Don[/name]'t worry about maggots, prententious etc…You’re making yourself crazy. FYI - [name]Ernest[/name] [name]Hemingway[/name]'s late granddaugher [name]Margaux[/name] was born [name]Margot[/name] but changed it because she was conceived after her parents drank Chateau [name]Margaux[/name]. Interesting fact. Personally, I prefer [name]Margot[/name] which is actually the nickname for the French name [name]Marguerite[/name]. There was a [name]Queen[/name] [name]Margot[/name] of [name]France[/name]. Pick one and don’t look back.

Oh! I’m not going crazy, then! You are very well named, Miss [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Margot[/name]!

[name]Lemon[/name]

Well the fact that a similar amount of [name]Margaux[/name] and Margots were born in [name]France[/name] is very encouraging! I saw on a yahoo question a site linked that shows it’s the 74th most popular name there or something, not sure how accurate that is. (Prénom : MARGAUX : fréquence, tendance, top des prénoms en France)

Maybe someone who understands French can interpret that link?

Anyway, husband and I are still thinking about it but it isn’t something that will be decided in a day or two  We are also worried about sibling pairing issues with the name.

Does it go with some of our other favorites like [name]Helena[/name], [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Calista[/name], [name]Fiona[/name] and [name]Xanthe[/name]? I’m not sure it does. I would feel trapped into sticking with the French theme and using names we like but not love like [name]Eloise[/name]. I’d appreciate your opinions on what “style” of name you would categorize [name]Margot[/name]/[name]Margaux[/name] in. French feminine or quirky edgy?

I think [name]Margaux[/name] is spunky, sassy, feminine, and fun. It’s a little bit edgy and a little bit elegant. I guess I’d pair [name]Margaux[/name] with sisters named [name]Adair[/name], [name]Celeste[/name], [name]Demi[/name] ([name]Demetria[/name]?), [name]Dahlia[/name], [name]Evangeline[/name], [name]Estelle[/name], [name]Gwyneth[/name], [name]Isolde[/name], [name]Juliet[/name], [name]Katya[/name], [name]Lucienne[/name], [name]Mercy[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Rosaline[/name], [name]Sylvie[/name], [name]Tallulah[/name], [name]Tamsin[/name], [name]Vivien[/name], and [name]Valeria[/name]. That’s pretty all over the place, yea?

I know a little [name]Margaux[/name] (7) with a French father and Swedish mother.
I never once thought her name anything but beautiful.
It is not pretentious and I agree with [name]Lemon[/name], many fabulous, quirky sister (and brother!) choices.
[name]Lovely[/name] choice and I prefer the [name]Margaux[/name] spelling.

i just saw today on another name forum where they have pics of their kids as their signature… two lil girls named [name]Macy[/name] [name]Alexis[/name] and [name]Margaux[/name] [name]Maria[/name]. i dont normally like any of the margaret/margo/maggie names but [name]Margaux[/name] [name]Maria[/name] looked adorable especially on this lil girl. if you love it, use it. dont worry about her having multiple personalities lol names seem to fit the person no matter what it is

I love [name]Margot[/name]/ [name]Margaux[/name]! Actually, I think I prefer [name]Margaux[/name] over [name]Margot[/name] even! I agree; I think [name]Margo[/name] looks incomplete and almost boring. I find [name]Margaux[/name] to be stunning, and I think that it is one of the loveliest spellings. I have a friend named [name]Margot[/name] and she says that everyone seems to have a bit of a difficult time pronouncing it, though.

But, all that aside, I’d go with [name]Margaux[/name]. ^^

I think [name]Margaux[/name] is lovely! [name]Margot[/name] looks more like it is pronounced as [name]Mar[/name]-goT(emphasis on the “T” sound).

This doesn’t seem to be prevailing opinion, but I like [name]Margot[/name] better. I think it is a name that is uncommon but recognizable so I don’t think it would get mispronounced that often. And [name]Margaux[/name] reminds me of Geaux LSU!

I used to live in [name]France[/name], and I knew 2 girls with this name, and they both spelled it Margault, and it wasn’t short for anything. I don’t think that spelling would work well for English speakers though.

I’m not usually one for respellings, but I love [name]Margaux[/name] as a middle name. Honestly, [name]Margot[/name] and [name]Margo[/name] both reminded me of maggots long before I saw it on this topic. I do love the sound of [name]Margaux[/name], it is so different and charming. I really don’t care that it isn’t the most legitimate of spellings. Of course, I don’t care about the pronunciation or spelling issues because I really would only use it as a middle name ([name]Serena[/name] [name]Margaux[/name] is on my list right now). And, as far as spelling/pronunciation issues go, I’m sure all the [name]Jayden[/name]'s, Braedens, [name]Mackenzi[/name]'s, and [name]Isobel[/name]'s out there will have to spell out their names all the time too. If you love the name, then don’t worry about little things like spelling. Sure, it can get annoying, but in the end it shouldn’t put you off of a name you love. I’m sure your daughter will understand.

mishada17 for most nameberries the classical spelling of a name is all important and some of the more ‘yooneek’ spellings send us into a headspin. So, spelling a name ‘properly’ is of the utmost of importance.

I love [name]Margaux[/name] [name]WAY[/name] more! I first fell in love this spelling when I saw it on a child in a milk magazine issue. Absolutely adorable.
