[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone so I think I’ve finally come up with my top 15 for girls and I thought I’d share them including their meanings to me. I’m shamelessly copying @seawillow with this format btw
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
‘sweet, gentle flower’
Summary
[name_f]Flora[/name_f] has been a favourite of mine for a long time, I just love it’s sweet and vintage sound. It is also not too common in the UK which makes me so happy. I adore [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] so much and just love it in this combo! [name_f]Flora[/name_f] means ‘flower’ which I think is beautiful and [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] means ‘mild/merciful’ which I have summarised as ‘gentle’ and the connection with the fruit has given this name the meaning ‘sweet, gentle flower’.
[name_f]Nell[/name_f] [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]
‘the work of God is bright’
Summary
[name_f]Nell[/name_f] has such strength and elegance to me and although controversial, I adore it as a name on it’s own ([name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] are beautiful but just don’t have the same sparkle for me). The meaning of [name_f]Nell[/name_f] is ‘bright, shining one’ which I think coveys an image of a headstrong and independent girl with a bright future. [name_f]Amalia[/name_f] is a new name-love of mine. I first heard when researching European Royals for my history class and found that many strong, female royals bore this name. The meaning of ‘the work of God’ is also really important to me in a religious sense. To me, this combination means ‘the work of God is bright’
[name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f]
‘noble and flourishing’
Summary
Both [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f] have connections to strong female figures in history: [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_u]Lovelace[/name_u], female mathmetician and of course the infamous [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_u]Nightingale[/name_u]. The combined meaning of ‘noble and flourishing’ conveys an image of someone headstrong, bright and constantly learning new things about the world around them which are all really important qualities to me personally.
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
‘forgiven and loved’
Summary
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f] has always been a name I loved the sound of but the meaning is considered to be ‘blind’ something that I found less appealing. However, I dug a little deeper into the meaning of the name and found that earlier translations have the meaning of ‘forgiving’ which I thought was beautiful. [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is such a beautiful vintage name that has strong family connections. It’s meaning of ‘lovable’ also bears a strong resemblance to the meaning of my dad’s name ‘beloved’ which I thought was a subtle yet sweet connection.
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
‘perfect happiness’
Summary
[name_f]Margot[/name_f] has been my favourite girl’s name for a very long time (as you can tell from my username ). [name_f]My[/name_f] favourite actress is [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] and she is one of the main factors that inspired my love for this name. The meaning of [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is ‘[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]’ and pearls are strongly symbolic of perfection, purity and incorruptability as they are one of the only treasures that don’t need cutting or polishing and are found fully complete. [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], meaning ‘happiness’ is so beautiful to me and also meaningful as happiness is such an important feeling that can sometimes be hard to find.
[name_f]Edie[/name_f] [name_f]Arabella[/name_f]
‘prosperous in prayer’
Summary
This combo has an important religious meaning to me as praying often helps us to thrive and flourish in difficult situations. [name_f]Edie[/name_f] took a while to grow on me as a name on it’s own but I have recently fallen in love with it. [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] is soft and light-hearted but has a sense of strength that I absolutely adore.
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
‘light of the first rose’
Summary
A fairly new addition to my list, this name conveys such beautiful imagery to me that I just had to put it in my top 15. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is so simple and classic, although it is popular it has such an undeniably timeless quality. It always reminds me of the little girl in the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] books [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_u]Pevensie[/name_u] which just makes me smile. [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] is a name I first heard on the character [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] [name_f]Everdeen[/name_f] in the Hunger Games and I really fell in love with the name and the character.
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f]
‘bright, joyful news’
Summary
This combo is a very subtle honour name that has a lot of meaning to me personally which is why i love it so much! [name_f]Clara[/name_f], ‘meaning bright’, honours my own middle name which as narcisistic as that sounds is something that I would love to pass on to a future child. [name_f]My[/name_f] middle name is Cl@re after the poet [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Clare[/name_u] and I think [name_f]Clara[/name_f] adds a sweet twist. It is also the name of one of my favourite characters in Dr Who (i’m such a nerd haha). [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] subtly honours a special family member whose name is J0y because of its meaning ‘bearer of good news’. To me ‘good news’ = ‘joy’.
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
‘God’s pure gift’
Summary
I love this combo so much. Daisies are often associated with purity, innocence and beauty and have connections to the Virgin [name_f]Mary[/name_f] in the Bible which is an important connection to me. [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] is a long-standing favourite of mine because of it’s beautiful sound and lovely meaning.
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f]
‘strength of the sea’
Summary
[name_f]Polly[/name_f] is a real GP of mine, it seems quite controversial with some people loving it whilst others dislike it completely. I think it’s sweet and gentle and I really love it’s ambiguous meaning as a variant of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] it can mean many different things but many of the meanings involve the idea of the sea which i love. The ocean is such a wonderful and powerful place. [name_f]Polly[/name_f] also has connections to one of my favourite books/movies [name_f]Pollyanna[/name_f] which holds a special place in my heart. [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] has always been one of my favourites, and brings back fond memories of dressing up as the [name_m]Roald[/name_m] Dahl character for world book day!!
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
‘flower of protection’
Summary
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] honours my grandmother whose name is R0sem@ry when I was younger I would call her ‘grandma rosie’ and she is such an important figure in my life it is so important to me that I honour her in some way. [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] means ‘resolute protection’ and my grandmother is someone who has always protected me throughout my life.
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Georgina[/name_f]
‘pledged to God on [name_f]Earth[/name_f]’
Summary
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f] is a name that appears often throughout my family tree, worn by many strong women in my family and so I thought it would be lovely to honour them all. [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] is a name I have loved for years. The meaning is ‘farmer’, someone who works the [name_f]Earth[/name_f] and provides therefore I took the meaning of this name to be ‘pledged to God on earth’.
[name_f]Birdie[/name_f] [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]
‘little bird on the high tower’
Summary
In all honesty, the meaning of this name is more about the imagery it conveys. Birds to me always seem so free and full of life. The imagery of a little bird perched on a high tower looking down at the world with so much to explore is beautiful to me and conveys a sense of adventure and fulfilment. [name_f]Birdie[/name_f] as a GP of mine but I just adore the way it sounds with the elegant [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] that I couldn’t not put this name in my top 15.
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
‘she is reborn into happiness’
Summary
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] meaning ‘Lillies’ has been a favourite of mine for some time now, I adore the bright and uplifting sound of the name so much. Lillies are a symbol of re-birth, rememberance and renewal which I think is a beautiful connection especially when paired with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] which means ‘she who brings happiness’. If I had a daughter with this name I hope she would spread happiness everywhere she goes.
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] [name_f]Delilah[/name_f]
‘precious and delicate’
Summary
Rubies are one of the most precious and valuable gem stones that have become a symbol of love and purity. The conections to purity have links with the meaning of my mum’s name which means ‘pure’ so there is also a very subtle connection there. I just love the imagery that this name conveys when combined with [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] ‘delicate’, the meaning feels warm and loving.
Please let me know what you think of these combos! I would love to hear your thoughts.
