I asked for your advice a while ago for baby girl #3 which was very helpful!
We are considering doing
Margriette (nn Maggie)
It seems to be a variant of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], etc.
But I can find very little about the name.
It seems to be a [name_m]Dutch[/name_m] translation of [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], but also used in [name_u]France[/name_u].
Thoughts?
How would you pronounce it?
I see it as “Mar-gri-ette”
(We didn’t want to do [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] because the pronunciation sounds weird with our last name).

Its very pretty and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] is such a sweet nickname but I’m having some trouble wrapping my head around it. I initially misread it as [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] and then as Magriette without the first R. This is the first time I’ve seen it so I would definitely get used to it if I met one but it threw me for a bit of a loop. It may also be misheard as [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] so some corrections might be needed.

Thanks!! I appreciate your thoughts. I think it will definitely require some explaining how to pronounce it. I’m not super worried about that though, my other daughter is [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] (nn Perrie) and no one ever says it correctly either haha.

It made me pause a moment since I’ve never seen it before but then I pronounced it initially as [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] in my head before reading your post. After reading your post I now see it as mar-gri-ette.

It actually reminded me first of the salad dressing, Marzetti vinaigrette. So I say it like you are thinking but I just envision salad as I do.
Hahaha I actually have no idea what that is, I don’t think we have that in my country.
It did give me a pause as my brain wanted to pronounce/read it as other names, but Margriette, now I’ve looked at it properly, is charming and distinctive.
I wonder if it comes from [name_f]Margriet[/name_f] (Mar-ghreet/mar-kreet), sort of like an anglicization of it?

I would say Mar-gri-ette in a [name_u]French[/name_u] way. So beautiful! I put it in google translate and the [name_m]Dutch[/name_m] was pretty cool too!

I’ve never heard of it before, and as far as I can tell, it isn’t a name that’s used in France. I’m not really familiar with Dutch names so I can’t comment on that.
The closest sounding French name I can think of is Mariette but it’s old-fashioned and not really used for babies anymore (a lot of -ette names are considered old-fashioned in France, except maybe Juliette and Violette).
Regarding Margriette, I find it a bit confusing to be honest. At first I read it as Magriette. Some people will struggle with the two “R” sounds.
The [name_m]Dutch[/name_m] version of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is [name_f]Margriet[/name_f] (pronounced mar-gree-t, with a rolling r and dutch g), so I think Margriette is a way to “frenchify” [name_f]Margriet[/name_f].
If I were to pronounce it in [name_f]English[/name_f], I’d probably go for your way!

I would pronounce it as you said, but I could see a lot of people just say [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]

I defaulted to pronouncing Margriette the same way as [name_f]Margriet[/name_f], assuming that was a simply a spelling variation.

Its pretty and easy enough to say. You could even us [name_f]Greta[/name_f] as a nickname if you were into that. [name_f]Mari[/name_f] is cool too.
