A week or so before my due date, I have fallen hard for [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]. I had been seriously considering [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] before, but it just doesn’t hold the same magic.
What do you think of [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]? Some friends have cautioned that the pronunciation/spelling might make her life a little more complicated, but I think it’s well-known enough thanks to all the 20’s-era Marguerites; and we’re well-rooted in an area (urban Seattle) that’s quite comfortable with unusual or non-English names.
What do you think of [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]? Is it usable?
Sidenote: what about [name_f]Gertie[/name_f] as a nickname (for family use)? Semi-plausible?
I like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] but I adore [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]. I don’t see anything complicated about the name. Maybe your friends didn’t like the name so they wanted to scare you off. It didn’t work, did it? I find the name romantic, vintage, sophisticated, elegant, chic and [name_m]French[/name_m]. [name_f]Gertie[/name_f] doesn’t appeal to me. [name_f]Margot[/name_f] or [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] are more natural nicknames. [name_f]Gertie[/name_f] could work but why choose it when there are far lovelier choices?
I agree, it doesn’t seem complicated at all. I volunteer at a refugee center in my city and a lot of the kids have the most gorgeous [name_m]French[/name_m] names. There’s a 9-ish year old girl named [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] who is just the sweetest, smartest little thing. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if people haven’t met a little [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] before, it’s very, very easy to love on a little girl - and it’s sophisticated when she grows up, too.
[name_f]Gertie[/name_f] isn’t my favorite nickname, though it was pretty cute on little [name_u]Drew[/name_u] Barrymore in ET. I guess the reason I hesitate is, as [name_u]Mischa[/name_u] said, there are so many gorgeous nicknames for [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]-based names.
One of my good friends teaches in Seattle, and she’s told me some of the names of kids in her classes because she knows I’m a name nerd. You’re right, it’s a VERY diverse city as far as names go. You’ll be just fine!
Thanks, [name_u]Mischa[/name_u]! No, it’s certainly not working, especially since the majority of responses have been closer to yours (and mine!)
I adore [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f], too. I’m tempted by the [name_f]Gertie[/name_f] possibility because my other style inclination is towards the clunky-cute, and imagining that I could have a two-in-one name–elegant, sophisticated [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] AND a retro nickname–is enticing. But I know the only decision I’m truly in charge of is the full name!
I had a student named Margeurite, and she went by [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. I don’t think that [name_f]Gertie[/name_f] is a bad nickname, it seems intuitive from the name. I think a little girl could wear it well.
I’ve never liked [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], but I think [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] is a lovely choice. It’s such a strong and fun name to imagine on a little girl. The only [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] I know is in middle school. The name is definitely usable in my opinion. But I don’t like [name_f]Gertie[/name_f] at all.
Well, I will be honest and say that I personally prefer [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]. However, it is in keeping with my personal style. [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f] is a beautiful name and obviously what you prefer. I don’t think that many people will have prn problems. Go for it! It is special to you!
I’ve recently come to adore the name [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]. It’s just so lovely all around! And I’m not a fan of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
I don’t like the nickname [name_f]Gertie[/name_f]. Makes me think of girdle. [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Mae[/name_f] or [name_f]Rita[/name_f] make lovely nicknames though.
