I say mar-ee-ah unless the [name_f]Maria[/name_f] in question is from [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]—then it’s mar-eye-ah.
[name_f]Maria[/name_f] = ma-ree-a
[name_f]Mariah[/name_f] = ma-rye-a
I agree with opheliaflora.
However, there is a medical facility in my area with [name_f]Maria[/name_f] in its name and that [name_f]Maria[/name_f] is pronounced ma-[name_m]RYE[/name_m]-a (according to the advertisements I hear on TV). So my assumption would be [name_f]Maria[/name_f] is ma-[name_f]REE[/name_f]-a but I guess I wouldn’t be to surprised if someone corrected me.
[name_f]Maria[/name_f] is a long established Classic prn Muh ree uh.
Thank you I too have only known [name_f]Maria[/name_f] as Ma-ree-ah, the nameberry page had mentioned the alternative pronunciation as Ma-rye-ah…
I wasn’t sure if was a dialect or was different for different nations.
But, thanks for the [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] reference as well!!
[name_f]Maria[/name_f] = Muh-ree-uh
[name_f]Mariah[/name_f] = Muh-rye-uh
[name_f]Maria[/name_f]- Muh-ree-uh
[name_f]Mariah[/name_f]- Mu-rye-uh
I pronounce [name_f]Maria[/name_f] like ma-[name_f]REE[/name_f]-ah and [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] like ma-[name_m]RYE[/name_m]-ah.
I usually say muh-[name_f]REE[/name_f]-uh, but I’ve known it to be MAH-ree-uh, mah-[name_f]REE[/name_f]-uh, and mah-[name_m]RYE[/name_m]-uh as well.
Basically, there’s no rule of thumb, but every language (or accent, in some cases) seems to have its standard pronunciation.
It’s ma-ree-a
