So, thought I had finally decided on [name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] until I was lying in bed last night (of course not able to sleep) when this song lyric came into my head: “Last dance with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], one more time to kill the pain”. I am really not into that scene and the last thing I want people thinking of when they meet my little girl is marijuana! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] with conjure up that image?
It didn’t occur to me until I read all of your post, but now that you made the connection, I can definitely see a few more people thinking that. If you’re worried about it, you can also go with something similar, like [name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_f]Jade[/name_f].
Unfortunately, yes it was my first thought. I like the suggestion of [name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_f]Jade[/name_f]
Honestly, as a native Spanish speaker I’m the one that should be worried. [name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] in no way brings to mind Marijuana - the way they are pronounced are completely different! [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is lovely too and reminds me more of Spiderman’s girlfriend and shoes than the drug.
That was my first thought, sorry.
Yeah that was my first thought as well. Sorry.
Such a bummer! I really like the name because it’s a combo of my middle name ([name_f]Marie[/name_f]), my mom’s middle name ([name_f]Anne[/name_f]), and my grandma’s middle name ([name_f]Jane[/name_f]). Alternatively, could go with [name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_f]Joelle[/name_f]…Her sister’s name is [name_f]Helena[/name_f] [name_f]Joelle[/name_f]. Funny because [name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] was actually suggested to me by several people on this site! I might stick with it because of the family connection. It seems to me the only time others really see/hear our middle names is at graduations. We would only call her [name_u]Marian[/name_u] on a daily basis, not the combo.
I can definitely imagine some people would think of the drug, but middle names aren’t really used that much so I’m not sure that it’s a big deal. If you decide to use something else, maybe you could consider different forms of [name_f]Jane[/name_f], like [name_u]Joan[/name_u] or [name_f]Iva[/name_f].
I am not objective because I live in a state where marijuana is legal & am surrounded by pot heads, lol! I would want to avoid the connection & would not go with [name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], but not every place is like where I live! [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_u]June[/name_u]? I love it even more than [name_u]Marian[/name_u] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] but it may not feel as special to you changing [name_f]Jane[/name_f] to [name_u]June[/name_u].
The concern comes from “[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]” being used as a euphemism for the drug, rather than the name sounding a lot like “marijuana”.
I would say, yes, it does make me think of the drug so I wouldn’t use it unfortunately.
It does but, eh, who cares?
If I didn’t already have a Jane, our next daughter would be called Mary Jane. Instead, we plan to name her Mary Margaret, so we will have a Mary and a Jane; I couldn’t give two figs about the marijuana reference.
I should add, a possible nickname is Molly, so there’s another drug reference. Again, drug references are not enough reason to give up beautiful names I love.
