We are feeling some pressure to go with a family name. My husband and I like [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] (my great grandmother’s name), but I am a little concerned that our daughter will feel stuck with an old lady name. We would probably use the nickname “[name_f]Etta[/name_f].”
Another option is to just name her “[name_f]Etta[/name_f].” Then we can give a nod to family, but maybe help our daughter feel like she has cooler name.
I personally feel that [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is a bit short to be a full name. I think [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] is rather really cute. It has a nice ring to it. If you love the name, you should use it.
I think [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is fine on its own. It’s no shorter than [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_f]Tess[/name_f]/a, [name_f]Eva[/name_f]/[name_f]Ava[/name_f], etc.
I will add that I am not a big fan of nicknames and believe you should name your child what you intend to call him/her. If you expect to only use [name_f]Etta[/name_f], why choose [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] to satisfy family pressure.
Which brings me to my last comment - if you love [name_f]Marietta[/name_f], nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f], use it. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about it being an old fashioned name. I wouldn’t really classify it as such, but older names are on trend now anyway. Pllease do not let any outside pressure influence you either!
I love [name_f]Marietta[/name_f], I think it is a beautiful name and a wonderful name to honor your family. I don’t think of it as old fashioned. I love the nickname [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and think that it can stand alone as a name just fine if that is what you would prefer. It doesn’t sound too nicknamey to me at all. Both are lovely options and I would go with whatever you prefer. Neither has significant drawbacks in my opinion.
[name_f]Marietta[/name_f] is lovely and I dont consider it old fashioned at all, especially not in comparison to names like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] which are far too popular at the moment. [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is sweet but personally I think its a nickname only.
It is a bit old-fashioned, but that’s very much the trend recently…so old-fashioned is popular
I know girls under 3 named [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], [name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f], etc. I think [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] will be in good company.
I actually really love [name_f]Marilla[/name_f] nn [name_f]Rilla[/name_f] (from [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables)
I was so happy to see your post! [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] has been one of my very favorite guilty pleasure names lately. I [name_u]Love[/name_u] it! You should definitely use [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] with the nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f]. She will have the best of both worlds and thank you for it one day.
[name_f]Marietta[/name_f] nn [name_f]Etta[/name_f] is lovely and not too old-fashioned at all! I don’t really associate [name_f]Marietta[/name_f] with any particular time period since it was never that popular.
