I am like 90% sure that I’ve already chosen my second daughters name… But then I came across Marigold and I can’t get it out of my head!!! I have always loved “Mary” (The Secret Garden was such a special story to me as a girl) and would probably call her Mary rather than Goldie as a nickname.
What do you think of it? Any middle names come to mind that make it feel a little more “classic”?
My firstborn is Emelia Greer, nn Emmie. Our current name choice for baby girl #2 is Madeline Ruth. Maybe Marigold Ruth is a good option, too? Ahhhh! I love them both!
Edited to add… The baby is due in December. Is it weird to name a December baby Marigold? It’s such a warm weather name I think!
I would personally go with [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] because it’s “safer”, but [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is so lovely, too!! Middle name ideas:
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f] (can’t tell if I love this one or if it doesn’t flow.)
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Elise[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_u]Louise[/name_u]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is so sweet, and I love how well it fits with [name_f]Emelia[/name_f]. [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is a lovely choice.
I do think it’s a very sweet name. It’s unique but familiar because it’s a flower. And I think it matches with your other daughter’s name well. I also think it’s different enough from [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] that if you had another girl in the future you could still use that name too.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there! I had meant to post on your previous post as I love your naming style. [name_f]Emelia[/name_f] [name_u]Greer[/name_u] is beautiful and balanced perfectly!
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] is a long time favorite of mine. I love it pronounced with the [name_f]Line[/name_f] and [name_u]Lyn[/name_u] ending. It has a childlike, whimsical feel, yet ages incredibly well. It’s classic and charming. [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is beautiful. [name_f]My[/name_f] only hesitation with this choice is I would predict that most of her life she would be called “Madelyn”, as the line ending is rare. Also, would her nn be [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]? [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] is a bit cheesy for my personal taste. What about nn [name_f]Mae[/name_f] for [name_f]Madeline[/name_f]? [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] and Mae-darling!
As for [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], I do love it also. It has more substance and strength to it when compared to similar names, such as, [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] or [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]. I would consider [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] endearing. As for a middle, [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is a bit “r” heavy and sounds clunky. If [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is a must for the middle, that would be my deciding factor for [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]. If not, I suggest:
That’s a good point with the Rs! I don’t want to say [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] is a must but it’s the name that keeps sticking around. We like it for what the biblical story represents for us. So, it very well could be the decider between [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f].
I’ve been hesitant that [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] and [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] could be cheesy but after the past few months it’s grown on me! I’ll probably be calling her [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] though and will be ok with others calling her [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] (or Madalyn… it will happen, it’s ok!).
Is [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] kind of awkward though? I think [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] is kind of easier on the tongue!
I say just go with [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]! Especially if you want to call her [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. Its a great name and not overused anymore. But if you love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] then thats nice too. I don’t think the time of year matters.
How crazy is it to make [name_f]Mary[/name_f] a nickname for [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] rather than [name_f]Maddie[/name_f]? Something I just thought about.
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] has been a combo on my shortlist for years so I’m very partial to her (and also love The [name_f]Secret[/name_f] Garden)!! I also prefer [name_f]Mary[/name_f] to [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] as a nickname. I don’t think it’s too R heavy but I can see how [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] might objectively have a better flow.
As for your other question, I wouldn’t use [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], I think that’s likely to cause confusion. [name_f]May[/name_f] or [name_f]Millie[/name_f] or [name_f]Della[/name_f] or [name_f]Lina[/name_f] could be alternate nicknames if you’re not keen on [name_f]Maddie[/name_f].
Personally I think [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] sounds better than [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and I always think that if a name has sentimental value/good memories associated than that automatically pushes it to the top of the line. And, as a fellow berry once wrote, [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and all its variants are in anarchy when it comes to pronounciations, unfortunately.
I love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]! This works beautifully. Although I like [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] I feel [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is so much more characterful and cool. [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and variations and [name_f]Maddie[/name_f] (for [name_u]Madison[/name_u] too) are everywhere. [name_f]Emelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is delightful.
I love [name_f]Mary[/name_f] too, though as it’s such a strong name on it’s own I’m not so keen on it for a [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] nn. I love [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] for [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], or [name_f]Mari[/name_f] spelling would be more appealing to me, and more obviously from [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] and [name_f]Mari[/name_f].
I’d stick with [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] as the middle.
It does kind of bother me that she’ll be due in [name_u]December[/name_u] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is such a spring/summer name to me! What do you think?
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is beautiful! I think it absolutely works for a winter baby - a ray of sunshine on a snowy day!
