I really love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] but understand your concerns if you prefer a more “serious” name. I love the back up names.
I like [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] but love [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] which gives great nn potential of [name_f]Dot[/name_f]/[name_f]Dottie[/name_f]/[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
I think if I had to choose from your list it would be [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] - that is a fabulous name!
Wow, this was harder than I expected. I like [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], and [name_f]Susan[/name_f]/[name_f]Susanna[/name_f] a lot. But the combo that stuck out was [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]. Such a sunny, happy name.
As far as worrying about her growing up, I wouldn’t be too concerned. She can choose to go by [name_f]Mari[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Sue[/name_f], [name_f]Susan[/name_f], etc. if she wants a more “serious” name. But, I think [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] ages well by itself.
I chose [name_f]Susan[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] but really prefer [name_f]Susanne[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]:)… it would still honor your Mom and the flow is better to me… good luck!
I love [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]. I think that’s a great choice. I didn’t think of “Hairy” at all. My mind actually goes straight to [name_f]Hattie[/name_f], so I think it’s fantastic.
[name_f]Susan[/name_f] is my top girl name. I adore it, totally charming. [name_f]Susan[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is lovely.
As someone who has [name_f]Susan[/name_f] on my list too it got my vote!
I like the sound and look of [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] with the nn [name_f]Margo[/name_f]. However, if you have both in a combo it would mean giving your daughter two flower names (marigold and black-eyed susans). Perhaps [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Susan[/name_f] would be the better option ([name_f]Hattie[/name_f] [name_f]Sue[/name_f]).
I’ll run [name_f]Susanne[/name_f] by my husband and see what he thinks!
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] is so lovely - I have several friends with the name, of varying ages, and it suits all of them. [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] is an adorable nickname, as is [name_f]Hetty[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f]/[name_f]Etty[/name_f] (one of my personal favourite nicknames), and it balances with [name_f]Susan[/name_f] in a vintagey but still stylish way. [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] just reminds me of washing up gloves - I’m not sure if that’s just an English term for them, but my family is always putting on the ‘marigolds’!
I really love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Susanna[/name_f].
Instead of [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] ,what do you think of [name_f]Arietta[/name_f]?
I think [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] or [name_f]Arietta[/name_f] [name_f]Susan[/name_f] are pretty names.
I’ve heard that about the gloves in [name_f]England[/name_f]! We’re in the states and it’s not a name for them here, so that wouldn’t be an issue. Also, I think that the way we pronounce HAIR-ee-ett, is maybe different than you do. Is it HAR-ee-ett in [name_f]England[/name_f]? I prefer it that way, but no one pronounces it like that here.
I voted [name_f]Susan[/name_f]. I know most berries find it dated, but last summer I met a college aged [name_f]Susan[/name_f] and she wore her name really well. It totally youthened the name for me. I love the nn [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] too. [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] is another cute option.
I also adore [name_f]Helen[/name_f]. Again, berries typically find it dated but I think it is a classic.
My mom’s name is [name_f]Daphne[/name_f]. Because of my mom, I’ve seen it age really well. I could imagine it on any age.
I really enjoy [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] too. Some berries still see it as dated but I think it’s starting to make a comeback on here and out in the non-nerd naming world. I personally wouldn’t use a nn for it, but there are some cute ones like [name_f]Doro[/name_f], [name_f]Dot[/name_f], and [name_f]Dora[/name_f] (I think [name_f]Thea[/name_f] could also work).
Not a fan of [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] or [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. For [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], it isn’t the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] part that gets me. It’s just that it sounds too dated for me. I love the nn [name_f]Hattie[/name_f] though. [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is just too much for me. Seems a bit hippy-ish to me. I prefer simple [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is okay. I prefer some of the shorter forms like [name_f]Margo[/name_f] or [name_f]Gretel[/name_f].
Thanks for all the feedback everyone!
I chose [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] but I’m wondering, how are you pronouncing [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]? To me it’s nothing like ‘hairy’. You’re more likely to get [name_m]Harry[/name_m] than hairy. However, I really love the nickname [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]. Personally I’d choose [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] over [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Susan[/name_f].
I quite like [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], I think it will age fine. I love that [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] and [name_f]Margo[/name_f] are options for a nicknames.
Sorry I’m not really a fan of [name_f]Susan[/name_f]. It’s nice to honour your mum but I think it just sounds really dated. [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] sounds quite like a name a 2 year old would give to their goldfish. It may work for a really young child but [name_f]Zuzu[/name_f] isn’t going to age well. Surely it should be Susu as well?
[name_f]Susanna[/name_f] is a much better option than [name_f]Susan[/name_f], it sounds a lot younger. I like the nickname [name_f]Zanna[/name_f].
I love [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], it’s really pretty and underused. My favourite nickname is [name_f]Dottie[/name_f]. I met a 3 year old who went by [name_f]Dot[/name_f] [name_f]Dot[/name_f] recently. [name_f]Dora[/name_f] is also a great nickname you could use. Recently, I’ve been starting to like [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] over [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], I think it sounds a bit fresher and more romantic, it also has the great nickname [name_f]Thea[/name_f].
I find [name_f]Helen[/name_f] quite boring sorry. There’s nothing particularly wrong with it but I don’t see the appeal.
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] is ok, I’ve never been a huge fan but then I started to love [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. However, I do still prefer [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] over [name_f]Margaret[/name_f].
I’ve always had bad associations with [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] but when I actually look at the name itself and ignore the [name_f]Daphne[/name_f] I grew up with then I can see why someone might choose it. It’s very soft and uncommon which I like.
I am just finding [name_f]Susan[/name_f] so, so, so refreshing! I know several little girls with mid-century names like [name_f]Helen[/name_f] and… now I can’t think of the others. But my point is that [name_f]Susan[/name_f] just sounds really dignified but also truly lovely. And refreshing in a world of Avas and Sophias and Isabellas (not that there’s anything intrinsically wrong with those names, they’re just so very au courant).
Where I live “hairy” and “[name_m]Harry[/name_m]” are pronounced nearly identically. It would be impossible to get anyone to pronounce it any other way. ![]()
All lovely choices. I voted [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], but [name_f]Susan[/name_f] is lovely as well.
