Marigold - yea/nay?

We’re thinking of naming our pending little girl [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. I’m drawn to nature-based names (I think because she’ll be born in the summer), and think this is a sweet but not too saccharine one. Another thing that I love about it is that my mother’s name was [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and my husband’s beloved grandmother was named [name_f]Ora[/name_f], so [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is a nice tribute to both of them.

My main hesitation is whether it’s too cute. A little girl named [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is adorable, but does it pass my Supreme [name_m]Court[/name_m] justice test (the most adult job I can think of)? “Supreme [name_m]Court[/name_m] [name_u]Justice[/name_u] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]”?

Also, our little boy’s name starts with M, as does my husband and children’s last name. Too much alliteration?

Thoughts? Hesitations?

Naming people stresses me out.

Thanks!!!

I think [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] definitely passes the test. I love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] with the nn [name_f]Margo[/name_f]

I was with you the whole way until you said your son, husband, and last name all start with M. I’m not opposed to alliteration with first name/last name combos-- [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f] [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] comes to mind, and in fact, my own first and last name both start with A.

I do love the name [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], and I think its a nice family tribute. As a supreme court justice, she wouldn’t be just SCJ [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. She’d be SCJ [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] Lastname. Or SCJ Last name. And of course, she could always choose to go by [name_f]Mary[/name_f].

But, BUT, because there is SO MUCH alliteration happening within the family, I would steer clear if it were me.
If it’s the only thing you can find that you love, okay, I wouldn’t side eye it. But I would just try to find an alternative first.

What about:
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_f]Lavender[/name_f], [name_f]Primrose[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], or [name_f]Clementine[/name_f]? All summery, nature-y names. I think of these, [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] has a similar feel to [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], while still holding on to that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] connection with your mother.

Good luck with your decision!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. It’s on my shortlist as well. My only hesitation with it is that I’ve never met a single person named [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], so not sure if it’s too “out there” :\ but I love the name!

I don’t mind the alliteration (as long as you don’t feel left out, as you’re the only one whose name doesn’t start with M?)

I don’t personally care for [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], but with your family names, it makes a really nice honor name. I actually like alliteration, so I think [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] M. would work with no problem. It makes a name very memorable.

I think it passes the test. I can see it on a professional adult women. I like the sound of it but I’d be worried about the nn [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or goldie. I’m Aussie and we shorten everything and I don’t really like the short options

I agree with this. It’s not a definite “nay”, but with so much alliteration going on - both with other family members and with your surname - I’d be tempted to keep looking unless you’re absolutely certain it’s THE name. If it’s truly the name you love most, go for it, but if it’s one on a list then I’d be inclined to choose something with a different initial.

All that aside, I think [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is a perfectly respectable name for a professional adult, so if that’s your main concern I wouldn’t worry!

Yea!!! [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]. I agree, sweet without being too saccharine. I think it sound sophisticated, not cutesy. Not a fan of [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] personally, if that’s on the list of potential nicknames. However that’s the only negative for me.

Yea, yea, yea :p! I adore [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]; it has a beautiful sound, fantastic imagery and personality (bright, energetic, happy, always smiling comes to mind). I also feel it’s a name with substance to it, and could definitely suit a grown woman in any profession. As for the alliteration, as long as it sounds okay with the last name, I don’t think it matters too much if you love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] enough. It is a brilliant name!
