Hubby and I have one son, [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], and love the classic, three-syllable names his name tends to fit in with. For our future daughter (we’re trying, not yet pregnant), we’re considering names that are a little less traditional but are still kind of vintage, if that makes sense.
With [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], our first pregnancy, we liked [name_f]Coralie[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Susanna[/name_f], [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], and the like.
With the next baby, those names (hard to narrow down) all seem lovely but don’t hit the nail on the head just yet. We have a LOT of women we’d like to honor. We have sisters [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and a grandmother named [name_f]Margot[/name_f]. Would [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] be a stretch for the first name? Hopefully [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] for the middle (for my sister) or [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] (mashup of [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Lora[/name_f] for my mom and hubby’s mom). I think my family would feel like we “made up” names or something and since [name_u]Teddy[/name_u]'s is so traditional ([name_m]Theodore[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]), we don’t want much backlash. It’s a sensitive topic of course, and anonymity helps, so we’re reaching out to you guys. Please help! Thanks,
K, J, and T
I think it’s perfect. It works well with [name_u]Teddy[/name_u], it’s a perfect way to incorporate several women while still a name of her own, it’s a legitimate name. Sounds like a a win, win , win to me
I love [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]! She’s one of my favourites, and is such a bright, and happy name with so much vintage charm and beauty. I don’t think [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is a stretch for [name_f]Mary[/name_f] /[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] /[name_f]Margot[/name_f]. They all share the [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- start, and I [name_f]Margot[/name_f] works as a nn for [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] so it’s definitely close. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] & [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] sound great together.
Thanks, everyone! Does anyone have any nickname suggestions? We wouldn’t want to use [name_f]Goldie[/name_f] or [name_f]Mari[/name_f]/[name_f]Mary[/name_f]. Any thoughts??
I think [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] is a great option, both with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and for all the reasons you’ve said.
My favourite nickname is [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. [name_f]Mari[/name_f] (pronounced [name_f]Marry[/name_f] rather than [name_f]Mary[/name_f])and [name_f]Molly[/name_f] are also nice. Also you could use [name_f]Maddy[/name_f].
Thank you all so much for your thoughts and ideas! I’m in love with this name. I hope to be able to use it in some way with one of our next little ones. Thank you, berries!
What about [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Bess[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]? [name_f]Bess[/name_f] and [name_u]James[/name_u] seem to match, and it makes the combo a bit more modern + vintage peppy, imo. I think cute nns are mimsy (as in [name_m]Lewis[/name_m] [name_u]Carroll[/name_u]), [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Bess[/name_f], Maebe (get it…[name_f]Mae[/name_f] B. - a cute arrested development nod), [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_f]Aggie[/name_f], [name_f]May[/name_f], [name_f]Marnie[/name_f] - I think just about anything works! [name_m]Even[/name_m] [name_f]Flower[/name_f] could work if you wanted it to - as in [name_f]Bambi[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] [name_f]Bess[/name_f] is great!
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]! One of my favorites. I’ve considered [name_f]Margo[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], but you probably wouldn’t want to use that because of the relative you’re honoring. If you don’t like [name_f]Goldie[/name_f], I’d use [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] is perfect.
