Marin or Mirren?

We’ve got both [name_f]Marin[/name_f] and [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] on our short list for our third daughter. Her middle name will be [name_f]Thea[/name_f]. I prefer [name_u]Mirren[/name_u], since I think [name_f]Marin[/name_f] could have pronunciation issues, but my wife prefers [name_f]Marin[/name_f] as its more international.

What do you think? [name_f]Marin[/name_f] [name_f]Thea[/name_f] or [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] [name_f]Thea[/name_f]? Siblings are [name_f]Briar[/name_f] (boy), [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Marin[/name_f], it’s on hubby and I’s name list. I’m not wild about [name_u]Mirren[/name_u], however, I think [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] [name_f]Thea[/name_f] sounds better together.

[name_u]Mirren[/name_u]! [name_f]Lovely[/name_f], sophisticated, unusual and I like the Scottish flavour of it with your other kids’ names. Together they conjure up an image of wild and windswept Scots moors - beautiful and fierce.

I do really like [name_f]Marin[/name_f] too, but [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] feels a little more solid and capable to me, and works so beautifully with the sibling names and with softer [name_f]Thea[/name_f] in the middle.

I immediately prefer [name_f]Marin[/name_f] or even Mairin (if ‘Meh-rin’ the version) to [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] which is severe to my ear. But the more I say [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] the cooler and more self-assured it sounds than [name_f]Marin[/name_f] and it does round off the sibs. I also like [name_u]Marion[/name_u], [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] or [name_f]Mary[/name_f].

I prefer [name_f]Marin[/name_f]. My first thought with [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] is [name_f]Helen[/name_f] [name_u]Mirren[/name_u]. Not a bad choice (or bad association, necessarily), but sort of seems off with your other kids names imo. [name_m]Ive[/name_m] really been liking [name_f]Maren[/name_f]/[name_f]Marin[/name_f] lately!

[name_u]Mirren[/name_u] makes me think of [name_f]Helen[/name_f] [name_u]Mirren[/name_u], which isn’t necessarily bad, just kind of unexpected?

I prefer [name_f]Marin[/name_f], or [name_f]Maren[/name_f]. I’m pronouncing it as [name_f]MAIR[/name_f]-in. Or is it supposed to be muh-[name_f]RIN[/name_f] (like [name_f]Marin[/name_f] County in [name_u]California[/name_u])?

I’m pronouncing it like MAH-rin. Which could be wrong.

I like [name_f]Marin[/name_f] better, I think it sounds better with [name_f]Thea[/name_f].

[name_u]Mirren[/name_u]! It’s got the same ‘‘open’’ sound as your other kids and echoes the Scottish charm.

[name_f]Marin[/name_f] is nice but looks less namely and is the [name_m]French[/name_m] word for ‘‘sailor’’ which puts me off a bit.

The spelling [name_f]Marin[/name_f] seems more pleasing but [name_u]Mirren[/name_u] really forces you to say it the way I’d say it. Oh, the dilemma…

We have a Marren in our family. I actually like the spelling [name_f]Maren[/name_f] best myself, depending on how you want to pronounce it.

[name_f]Marin[/name_f] will end up being pronounced Mah rin some of the time, because of the famous [name_u]California[/name_u] location.

[name_u]Mirren[/name_u] will be Meer in.

[name_f]Maren[/name_f] is the only one I see pronounced as [name_f]Mare[/name_f] en. I think [name_f]Maren[/name_f] [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is lovely.

I would pick the spelling that gives you the pronounciation you prefer.

I love [name_u]Mirren[/name_u]. [name_f]Marin[/name_f] is nice, but I think it seems a bit masculine next to [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Elsie[/name_f].

I prefer [name_u]Mirren[/name_u], and feel it has more charm and style, and is better with your other kids’ names.
