Marissa and Mariah -- Thoughts?

Confession: [name_f]Marissa[/name_f] and [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] are two of my favourite names. They seem to be quite unpopular though. I realise that [name_f]Marissa[/name_f] is very 80s and [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] is strongly linked to the pop diva, but for some reason, I adore both these names. Whenever I hear them, I have a familiar fondness for them. I would seriously consider them for a future daughter… except that people seem to really dislike them. Can anyone help me understand why? Thanks!

I think it is because they feel dated but not in an on trend vintage way. I kind of like them though and if they’re what you love you shoukd go for them

I like the names, but more importantly you like the names and you probably wanna be more ahead of trend then on trend? You know what I mean?

I think [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] and [name_f]Marissa[/name_f] have a pretty sound and if you love them, then why not? Personally I don’t think having a name that’s somewhat dated is a big issue. [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] is a name that often gets described as being “too dated” on Nameberry, but in the US it ranks at #344 so clearly some people are still using it.

I agree with @greyblue: it’s probably because they were popular too recently to feel vintage, and so just come across as dated. Personally, though, they both seem perfectly attractive and usable to me, and I’m sure if you actually gave one of these names to your daughter, no-one would be rude enough to comment. [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] is one of my own guilty pleasure names, but I’ve never had the courage to promote it to my list because I think the [name_u]Carey[/name_u] connection is inescapable.

I don’t ‘dislike’ either. I think [name_f]Marissa[/name_f] & [name_f]Mariah[/name_f] are both fine names and while they are both dated, they’re certainly not outdated.

In your signature I see “[name_f]Maisie[/name_f]” as a nickname for [name_f]Marissa[/name_f], which is nice. I think that tones down that dated feel a lot. Perhaps with [name_f]Mariah[/name_f], you could use “[name_f]Maia[/name_f]”?
