Martha Marcy May Marlene Conundrum

So how many of you have seen that movie? It’s one of my favorites, and it made me fall even more in love with the name [name]Marcy[/name].

[name]Marcy[/name] is a top contender for us because my best friend’s name is [name]Martha[/name], and is called [name]Marcy[/name] by her family. (FYI, I don’t care for the name [name]Martha[/name] - we would not use it.)

Here’s the problem, I [name]LOVE[/name] the way [name]Marcy[/name] [name]May[/name] flows. If I had thought of it on my own, I think I would definitely use it as a fn/mn combo, and probably use it in it’s entirety. The issue is, in the movie - the girl’s name is [name]Martha[/name], and she is “renamed” [name]Marcy[/name] [name]May[/name] by the leader of a cult she get sucked into. So basically, the name [name]Marcy[/name] [name]May[/name] strips her of who she really. I just feel pretty uneasy using a name with that sort of association.

So what do you think? I don’t believe the movie is super well-known. But do you think the association is just too much for those of us who have seen the movie? [name]Do[/name] you think my future daughter would be upset at where the idea of her name came from?

I’d appreciate any thoughts. Thank you!

I’ve never heard of the movie, but I don’t watch that many movies. I think [name]Marcy[/name] [name]May[/name] is cute, but [name]May[/name] is just kind of a filler name to me, just cause it has no personal significance for me. It is nice though, and if I knew a girl with that name I would always call her [name]Marcy[/name] [name]May[/name]. It flows off the tongue really well.

I’ve heard of the movie but haven’t seen it. Honestly, it’s hard for me to say if the name [name]Marcy[/name] [name]May[/name] would have immediately made me think of the movie or not, since the title of your thread had me thinking about it anyway. I do think that the association is troubling, though. [name]Even[/name] if other people don’t pick up on it, it seems to be something that might nag at the back of your head a bit if you’re already worrying about it now.

What about [name]Marcy[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]? It’s really similar, but it might be different enough to move away from the association with the film.

well if you like different spellings how about [name]Marcie[/name] [name]Mae[/name] instead?
its pronounced the same but wouldnt look the same on paper

Never heard of the movie.

I like the pp spelling of [name]Macie[/name] as an option. Also have you considered [name]Macy[/name]?

Would you consider [name]Marceline[/name]?

[name]Marcy[/name] [name]Mae[/name] is nice.

[name]Even[/name] though the movie was critically acclaimed most people didn’t see it, so I wouldn’t worry about the connotation. While I’ve heard of the movie, I haven’t seen it, so I didn’t know she was renamed [name]Marcy[/name] [name]May[/name]. I say go for it, it’s really cute, although I do prefer [name]Marcy[/name] [name]Mae[/name].

I’ve never heard of the movie, but I like [name]Marcy[/name] [name]May[/name].

Hmm, I do love the way it sounds, [name]Marcy[/name] is so lovely and so underused, but youre right, it doesnt exactly have the best meaning in the film. I like the suggestion of [name]Marcie[/name] [name]Mae[/name] to give it a different look (plus, I think it looks nicer on paper that way)

[name]Marcy[/name] [name]Faye[/name]
[name]Marcy[/name] [name]Jane[/name]
[name]Marcy[/name] [name]Maeve[/name] (to second pp)
[name]Marcy[/name] [name]Maria[/name]
[name]Marcy[/name] [name]Maya[/name]
[name]Marcy[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]

This reminded me, I know a woman named [name]Maggie[/name] [name]May[/name]…also not the best association, again mom loved the way it sounded. She’s managed to laugh it off for 30 years now. Sure there were moments where she thought “Really Mom?” haha, but she’s never thought of changing it or been truly upset over it.

mmmm, i [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Marcy[/name] [name]May[/name]!!! forGET the movie, forGET the movie’s spelling. although [name]Mae[/name] is pretty, i think [name]May[/name] is much less common and together they are lovely, as i just recently learned about “alliteration” i [name]LOVE[/name] it even more!!! do it up, it sounds perfect!!
i’ve never even heard of the movie.

[name]Love[/name] that movie! But I really had to seek it out to find a theater that was showing it! And I’m in nyc. I know that it was her cult name so it has bad connotations, but it also reminds me of the movie & the gorgeous actress! I think it’s not nearly as eye-catching as [name]Rosemary[/name] or [name]Damian[/name].
If you’re really bothered by it maybe [name]Marsha[/name], [name]Masha[/name], [name]Marta[/name], [name]Martine[/name] or [name]Marcheline[/name] would work with mn [name]May[/name]?
My favorite name from the title is [name]Marlene[/name] & I think [name]Marla[/name] [name]May[/name] would be cute.

Thanks everyone for the help! You’ve made me feel a lot better about using it. We really like it and I think we could definitely consider using it now. I really like the suggestion of [name]Marcy[/name] [name]Mae[/name] or [name]Marcie[/name] [name]Mae[/name]. [name]Even[/name] though they’re the same names, the spelling helps distance the name from the movie.

Thanks!
