Is [name]Martha[/name] ready for a comeback or still far too dowdy?
I knew a [name]Martha[/name] who was just the sassiest, funniest gal, so I think it can be shined up by someone with extreme pizazz. Without that personal association though, I find it musty, fusty, mauve, mommish, terminally drab.
I think [name]Martha[/name] is a “granny” name that’s totally ready for a comeback! About fifteen years ago on a CBC mystery radio show ([name]Canada[/name]), the very cool modern-day hero and heroine of the story had a baby named [name]Martha[/name], and I always liked it for a baby since then. It sounded so soft and lovely the way they said it. Would be great with something really fun and special in the middle name spot.
I like [name]Martha[/name]. I have ever since [name]True[/name] Grit (the book, not the movie) made a massive impression on me when I was about 10 years old.
It has an Old [name]West[/name] sound to me, older than old-lady, so it loops back around to fiesty and cool. I also find it more interesting than other more popular old-fashioned names, like [name]Matilda[/name].
[name]Lovely[/name] opinions thanks berries!
I also agree with the images that emmabobemma portrayed, I can see [name]Martha[/name] as both of those women/girls. I think I would love to meet a [name]Martha[/name], but I don’t think I would be brave enough to use it myself.
Any other thoughts??
My husband met a man a while back with 3 children: [name]Simon[/name], [name]Martha[/name], and he couldn’t remember the other child’s name. I thought [name]Martha[/name] and [name]Simon[/name] were very well matched siblings and I still am so curious what the other child’s name was. [name]Martha[/name] is the type of name that 10 years back I would have though terrible but now I can see the charm.
Honestly, I would much rather meet a baby [name]Martha[/name] than yet another [name]Matilda[/name] or [name]Mabel[/name].
My best friend’s name is [name]Martha[/name]. We are in our late 20s. She is athletic, funny, and always ready to laugh. Funnily enough, [name]Martha[/name] STILL feels like an “old lady” name to me, even after 10 years with my BFF. Honestly, I do think it could be ready for a comeback… But maybe not as ready as others, like [name]Harriet[/name] or [name]Pearl[/name]. Idk, just my opinion.
[name]Martha[/name]? Not a good choice for a baby born in this day and age.
I had a college class with a girl named [name]Martha[/name] who HATED her name. She goes by [name]Mara[/name] instead, and she has to explain it to every instructor every year. And they don’t quite get it. It must be exhausting.
[name]Martha[/name] is just too old-lady in my honest opinion. It sounds pretty to say it out loud, but it just doesn’t fit on a little girl these days.
I think [name]Martha[/name] is great, but I have other names that love more. In response to the PP, I just wanted to say that I know two [name]Martha[/name] s - one is in her 20s and one is in her 50s - they both love their names. So it really just depends on the person.
Definitely ready for a comeback! It’s an adorable name and the fact that it’s not as popular as it was just makes it more appealing. I’d love to meet a little [name]Martha[/name]!
[name]Martha[/name] is my grandmother’s name. I loved her, but couldn’t bring myself to name any of my four daughters after her…not even a middle name. Perhaps one of my daughters could use [name]Marta[/name]. Actually, that is how it’s pronounced in [name]German[/name], the country she came from.
