Marvelous *and* Intoxicating?

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is the longest standing name on my girls’ list, holding a place there since 2013. I can’t imagine ever falling out of love with [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] but I also feel like she’s a bit… safe. She’s my comfort name. If my top 10 didn’t have [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], I think my world would collapse (okay, not really, but my UC would feel really really strange), but when it comes down to it, I would likely pass her up for other, more exciting names on my list.

I wonder if it’s because she’s one syllable. There are a lot of one-syllable names on my long list and I absolutely love them but they usually fail to make my top names because when compared to others, they feel as though they’re lacking something. [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] has always survived this. I think it’s because of the sweetness of the name combined with the punchy V at the end that saves it from seeming as one-dimensional as the others. I think this could be why I’m more excited about other names on my top list though.

So then there’s [name_f]Marvel[/name_f]. I fell in love with [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] after [name_m]Pete[/name_m] Wentz named his daughter [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] a few years ago. I also enjoy [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] movies and have fond memories watching them with my friends and family. What I really love about [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] though is its meaning as a word: “be filled with wonder and astonishment.” It really is quite marvelous, right?

[name_f]Marvel[/name_f] might not be the hardest name to wear though and I get that. So we bring back [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]. I’ve had [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] as a nickname possibility for [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] for years but is it ready to become my [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]?

I’d love to hear others’ thoughts!

This is a tough one because if I’m honest, I prefer the beautiful, intoxicating [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]. It has a simplicity yet it’s deep and wonderful.
But today something is pulling me towards [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] - there’s something interesting, sparky and lovely about it

I think you shouldn’t have to settle for one, [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is a solid choice it’s beautiful and popular for a reason but [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], would not only be a fun idea but a pretty obvious choice to soothe your worries, I chose [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] in the end given how there is something about it that makes me chose it even though I love [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] just as much, it was a tough choice and I feel I understand how tough it is for you :joy: how troublesome

That’s really difficult! They’re quite different as names. If you were to use [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], I think you need to love both [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], and be okay with her being called both. Would you switch between the two or primarily use [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]?

The nn is a stretch, but it could work. However, I honestly think [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] is wearable. It’s really not the most out-there name when you consider names that others have used, even non-celebrities. I mean, [name_u]Nova[/name_u] can be in the Top 100, but [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] is too out-there? I don’t think so. I think you can keep both on your list in their own rights if you want.

@Lilsibubs I love both equally but for different people, if that makes sense. If she loves [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] and felt confident wearing the name, I prefer that. If she didn’t feel like she fit into that much name, I prefer [name_f]Maeve[/name_f].

@princesspanda the not-settling-for-one thing is another thing I like! To answer @almostactually, I would use both names unless she had a preference. I don’t think that sisters could be named [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] though, because they’re too close in sound.

@elanorelle and @Greyblue thank you! I loved hearing those views on [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] and [name_f]Marvel[/name_f]!

I like both! Though I personally like them separately

@rhodes2nowhere the nickname actually came to me naturally, I wasn’t looking for something to call [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] or anything, so I’m not worried about it being a stretch. They are different styles though, if that what you meant by separately

I absolutely adore [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]! I think it’s beautiful, intoxicating, and wondrous. I actually think it accomplishes this far more than [name_f]Marvel[/name_f]. [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] is a fun, bright word that inherently embodies its meaning, but as a name, it falls a little flat. It’s also a little too on the nose, while [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is a subtle beauty that still embodies that marvelous spirit. (Plus [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] is pretty well eclipsed by the brand, which lessens some of its sparkle and meaning imo.)

I also think [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] is a big name to saddle a child with, especially a little girl, and I personally view [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] and [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] as completely separate names. Though they look similar, they have completely different sounds structurally and I’m big on nicknames being natural extensions of the name’s sound or meaning. Making [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] a nickname for [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] actually takes some of the appeal away from both names. It seems you’re always drawn back to [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], even when considering [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] or other names, so I would stick with where your heart is and go with [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]!

Maeve is such a beautiful, charming name, with all the magic and wonder I believe you’re seeking.

@rhodes2nowhere that’s okay haha! I completely understand.

@caramel107 I’m honored to be seen as consistent enough that there are names that are [name_u]Abby[/name_u]-like haha. I usually feel like my mind is all over the place.

@catieQ I love that description of [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]! I totally see what you mean and up until about a year ago, I would’ve completely agreed. I just think [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] has lost some of that magic and wonder for me but I can’t imagine letting her go which is why I think she could work as an addition to a name that does have that magic and wonder, if that makes sense. Again, I’m not worried about [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] “[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]” being a stretch because it came to me naturally!
