Mary or Miriam?

Now that we’ve started trying to conceive again, I’m obviously thinking of baby names again and lately my heart has been split between [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] with potential nicknames [name_f]Mim[/name_f], [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] and [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] and middle names Waterlily, [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] or Foxglove (for now).

What do you think of [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]? Which do you prefer?

I love both, [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is my mn and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] has been on my list as an honor name. My decision would have to do with the sound and syllables of your last name. I think [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Waterlily and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] Foxglove are beautiful.

[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] is just absolutely lovely!

I’m very biased but I prefer [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]. It’s such a gorgeous, sophisticated name that is also enjoying international popularity. Our [name_f]Mariam[/name_f] loves her name but she also gets called [name_f]Mamie[/name_f], [name_f]Mim[/name_f], [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] [name_f]Cat[/name_f] or Miss M a lot.

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] is lovely but in my opinion, it somehow lacks character. I always picture [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as a typical goody two shoes - think [name_m]Tom[/name_m] [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]'s cousin.

[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] Foxglove would be stunning!

Definitely [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]! [name_f]Mary[/name_f]'s nice, but it feels sort of basic and not as interesting to me. [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] is a lovely and sweet name that I can imagine on all kinds of women and that I find very fashionable.
My favorite combo would be [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f], it’s stunning!

I love both! They both have such old-fashioned, timeless charm. They would both be refreshing to hear on a child.

I prefer the contrast of using prim [name_f]Mary[/name_f] with such whimsical middles <3

Mary Foxglove would be my pick, Foxglove has such power and mystery to her ^^
As part of the sibling group, going from Bruno to Mary seems a little conservative, but Mary and Peter would be fine as a sibset, so I actually kind of like how the sibset would circle back with the addition of Mary at the end (?).
Miriam Bluebell would be my Miriam combo pick, but it’s a little too sweet maybe? Especially with Mim as a nickname.

Mary Waterlily is a little repetitive. Miriam Waterlily is a little clunky. I would not pair either with Waterlily.

[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] would be gorgeous

I love both so am finding this very hard to choose. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is so rarely used these days that it has a sweet freshness. [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] is lovely.

I have fallen hard for [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] and I love it with a whimsical, nature-inspired middle. Great nicknames too. I love [name_f]Miri[/name_f] and [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] and I would even consider [name_f]Molly[/name_f] if it seemed to fit.

[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] is elegant and pretty. I don’t mind [name_f]Mary[/name_f] but it doesn’t interest me as much.

Both are fine names, but I would much rather be named [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I would go by [name_f]Maryellen[/name_f]. [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] to me summons up the image of a gigantic earth mother, all kind of smothery with m’s.

Definitely [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]! Much less common and has more nn potential. I think [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] and Foxglove sound better with [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] than Waterlily. On the flower subject, I think [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Dahlia[/name_f] is also beautiful.

I like [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], although [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is nice too.

I’m due in a few weeks with a daughter who we are planning on naming [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]. So obviously I’m a big fan! It’s a distinguished name with sweet, loveable nicknames. I like the combo [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] foxglove best.

I also really like [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. It is much more common as a name, but I think it would feel fresh, sweet, and unexpected on a little girl.

Both would work beautifully in your sibset. However, I like [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] much better with all of the potential middles you listed, with my favourite being [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] Waterlily. [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] Foxglove and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] are also gorgeous though. With [name_f]Mary[/name_f], Foxglove would probably be my favourite.

Personally, I would go for [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], as [name_f]Mariam[/name_f] is one of my favourite names and I also really like the Hebrew version.

In general I prefer [name_f]Mary[/name_f] by a long shot but I think [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] would sound lovely with your children’s names.

It seems like [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] has received slightly more praise, although I can see how it’s a name that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I’m still very conflicted. Honestly, my favorite combo was [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] Waterlily, I really, really want Waterlily as another daughter’s middle name! I guess I’ll have to keep looking for the perfect name, though I won’t be removing [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] from the list.

As for [name_f]Mary[/name_f], love her to pieces, but I haven’t found a middle name for her that has made me go “WOW, that’s it!”. Thank you, everyone, for the feedback!

I am torn. Both are excellent, strong names that are very recognisable and would go so well with your more out there middle names.

I do think [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Foxglove is particularly wonderful though.

Is [name_u]Marion[/name_u] a possibility? [name_u]Marion[/name_u] Waterlily? I think you can still go with [name_f]Mim[/name_f] or [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] as a nickname there (and [name_u]Min[/name_u] and [name_f]Milly[/name_f] would also work). I love [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Foxglove and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] as full names.

[name_f]Mary[/name_f] is a name that could stand more use anywhere in the English-speaking world, but next to sisters [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] and [name_f]Sabina[/name_f], she feels a little wallflowery, if that makes sense–a supporting character in [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] and [name_f]Sabina[/name_f]'s story (if one of your daughters were a [name_f]Helen[/name_f] or [name_f]Anne[/name_f] or [name_f]Theresa[/name_f], I think [name_f]Mary[/name_f] would be a brighter fit. Does that make sense?). I know her name will be her own in the long run, but those early years when you define yourself in relation to your family are so important!
