Masculine middle name with a very feminine first?

We have chosen a elegant, feminine first name for our daughter. I generally absolutely love unisex/masculine sounding names for baby girls and am really struggling to find a feminine middle name to match the first. I’d love to just go with one of our unisex choices as I feel it balances out nicely but have a lot of people telling me it would “take away” from the first name. What are your thoughts??

I don’t think so. What are your choices?

I think a unisex name paired with a elegant, feminine name is just fine! I like the balance that could offer too. I also would like to know your choices/options!

I like a feminine name paired with a unisex one, like [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] [name_m]Jekyll[/name_m] or [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_u]Calder[/name_u].

We haven’t totally settled on any middles we love yet, feminie or masucline for that matter. I just feel nothing sounds right. The first name will be [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]. This is the list of masculine/unisex names that have been on our list.

[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]
[name_u]Presley[/name_u]
[name_m]Harlan[/name_m]
[name_u]Langley[/name_u]
[name_u]Reese[/name_u]
[name_u]Marley[/name_u]
[name_u]Hudson[/name_u]
[name_u]Adley[/name_u]
[name_u]Blakely[/name_u]
[name_u]Finley[/name_u]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u] (older daughters name)
Aslan (older daughters middle name)

[name_u]Harper[/name_u] Aslan and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] sound great to me! [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] is also nice.

(I’ll admit that I’d assume that [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] or [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] was your maiden name or a family surname, since that’s very common where I live).

I’m not keen on the double -ee sound, so with [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] these would be stricken from my list: [name_u]Presley[/name_u], [name_u]Langley[/name_u], [name_u]Marley[/name_u], [name_u]Adley[/name_u], [name_u]Blakely[/name_u], [name_u]Finley[/name_u]. I’m also not a fan of alliteration, so that would mean a no for [name_u]Reece[/name_u]. These are just my personal preferences, though, obviously!

I feel the same way about the double -ee sound and alliteration, which is making this so much more difficult. I had decided against all of the names on that list due to them sounding strange with [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]. Although I love [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] and [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], only gave up on those because my [name_f]MIL[/name_f] is quick to let me know that they are boys names.

I love [name_u]Harper[/name_u] Aslan! I have Aslan on my boys middle name list, and I love to hear of someone who has actually used it!
My favourite off your list would be [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_m]Harlan[/name_m], but quite possibly [name_m]Harlan[/name_m] is too close to [name_u]Harper[/name_u]…
I know you didn’t ask for suggestions, but I love the idea of [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] All the best!

I think [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] works. Some other suggestions for middles:

[name_u]Addison[/name_u]
[name_u]Blair[/name_u]
[name_u]Cameron[/name_u]
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u]
[name_u]Jude[/name_u]
[name_u]Lane[/name_u]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_u]Wynn[/name_u]

Suggestions are more than welcome! I like [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] as well but DH’s best friends name is [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u] :frowning:

I’m really against using masculine names on girls because I see it as ignoring the plethora of rich girls’ names and history/heritgae in favor of something trendy and with “strength” (as if girls names can’t also be strong). This is just my personal conviction.
I do think it detracts from a feminine first and seems as if the parents are trying to “make-up” for or apologize for how feminine the first name is. I guess it boils down to motive. If a person thinks that you can’t name someone a feminine name because it sounds too weak, so you have to “strengthen” it with a masculine name, then I do have an issue with that logic.
And on a shallower note, I just don’t think ‘unisex’ names sound good on anyone. But as with anyone, please take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I like the idea of a feminine middle name with a more masculine/unisex middle name. I think it makes it more modern and interesting.

I absolutely [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the super feminine first/unisex or traditionally “masculine” middle combo. Actually, if we have a girl next time around, that’s my plan. Close family friends of ours have the last name [name_m]Cole[/name_m], and while I don’t actually prefer that name for a boy I think it would make a great middle for a girl with a feminine sounding first name! [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] is an absolutely darling name! I think it will sound beautiful with a unisex middle.
