Anytime I hear people talk about naming multiples they talk about how much they hate matchy names and theme naming. Am I the only one who thinks it’s cute? Obviously there are lines that shouldn’t be crossed ([name]Isabella[/name] and [name]Isabelle[/name] or [name]Joseph[/name] and [name]Josephine[/name] for example) but I don’t see why some people hate even matching initials or giving them both flower names or something. If I ever have twins I’d love to give them matchy names. I feel really alone on this and feel like talking about it is going to bring me negative comments. So if anyone agrees with me I’d love to hear what you have to say. God bless.
I don’t mind matchy names at all, especially for twins, as long as they’re not over the top, like you said. For the longest time I was in love with [name]Emmeline[/name] and [name]Eleanor[/name] because both are old-fashioned sounding E names with the very matchy nicknames of [name]Emmie[/name] and [name]Ellie[/name]! (which I love!) I also love twin names that are similar in style or origin.
Some of my favorites and their reasons for matching:
[name]Eleanor[/name] and [name]Emmeline[/name] (as above)
[name]Juliet[/name] and [name]Rosalind[/name] ([name]Shakespeare[/name] characters)
[name]Lark[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] (birds)
[name]Susannah[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] (underused, old-fashioned)
[name]Melody[/name] and [name]Piper[/name] (music-themed and bubbly)
[name]Elanor[/name] and [name]Elenna[/name] (both “[name]El[/name]” LotR names)
[name]Violet[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name] (plants)
[name]Sophia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] (“S” beginning, “ia” ending)
[name]Josie[/name] and [name]Pippa[/name] (peppy short forms for very old-fashioned [name]Josephine[/name] and [name]Philippa[/name])
sorry for the lack of boys’ names-girls’ names are so much more fun!! haha. [name]Hope[/name] this helps you see that you’re not the only one who likes matchiness! What are some of your favorites?
I don’t necessarily see any problem with the same initial, or even flower names. But yeah, I think the more subtle the better. I really like the previous poster’s ideas.
If we have boy-girl twins I think dh and I would be quite tempted to use [name]Theresa[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name].
I love it, but I must admit I veer more towards cutesy sweet names than mythical, storied or royal names. I would love to have g/g twins named [name]Bernadette[/name] & [name]Beatrice[/name] and would totally call them [name]Birdie[/name] & [name]Bea[/name]. I know it’s twee, cheesy, or whatnot, but I figure with ‘grown up’ full names like [name]Bernadette[/name] & [name]Beatrice[/name] it would be OK. My husband is against matching when it comes to twins- names, clothes, ect. I think it’s no more damaging than referring to them as a unit, ‘the twins’ as I always hear the parent’s of twins say. [name]Just[/name] raise them in a way that you are mindful of their unique qualities and I think it doesn’t matter what you name them!
I have two girls [not twins] named [name]Mary[/name] and [name]Martha[/name]. They are family names and I love that they work well together.
My twin sister and I have matchy names (DanniLynn and [name]Danielle[/name]) and I’ve always hated it. People have tried to us the same nickname our whole lives and it has gotten pretty annoying. I like matchy names if they are the same letter or have the same meaning but I dont like silimar names and rhyming names.
I agree. Names that are too similar take away from the uniqueness of each twin. That said, I like names that match in more subtle ways - like sharing similar meanings or the same letter in the middle of the name or double letters, etc. For example, with [name]Danielle[/name], I might pair [name]Juliette[/name] as both are French with double letters. With DanniLynn, I might pair JessieMae as both double names wth a capital in the middle.
Some twin pairs I really like are:
[name]Lily[/name] and [name]Iris[/name] (flower names of the same length and syllables with the the first and third letters the same)
[name]Liza[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name] (both vintage, two syllables with a z)
[name]Jane[/name] and [name]Rose[/name] (both simple, sweet, and vintage)
[name]William[/name] and [name]Andrew[/name] (both timeless, traditional names one beginning with w other ending with w. - nn [name]Liam[/name] and [name]Drew[/name])
I don’t mind matchy names, as long as they aren’t too similar, like the ones you mentioned. Our daughter’s name is [name]Isabella[/name] (nn [name]Bella[/name]) an one of the names I’m considering for our second (if it’s a girl) is [name]Gabriella[/name] (nn [name]Gabbie[/name]). If we go that direction, I will probably get a lot of flack for it, but it’s tough picking names we like and that sound good with our last name!
I think well coordinated names are OK but if they get too cutesy then I think it’s just over the top. Especially with higher order multiples. If you have twins and name them [name]Lily[/name] and [name]Rose[/name] then that doesn’t bother me but if you have quadruplets and name them [name]Lily[/name], [name]Rose[/name], [name]Daisy[/name] and [name]Iris[/name] that just seems a little too much.
I was never a fan of matchy name or alliterations until I fell IN [name]LOVE[/name] with all names beginning with E. I didn’t mean to, but I can’t shake them. Right now, we have one child: [name]Elijah[/name] [name]Myles[/name].
But if we had twin girls, I can’t shake the fantasy of naming them [name]Elaina[/name] [name]Wren[/name] and [name]Emelia[/name] [name]Jane[/name] ([name]Elaine[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name] are both family names). I know they sound crazy similar, and I probably wouldn’t pull the trigger on it, but I can’t seem to fall in love with anything but
My mother went the opposite route. She named me [name]Casi[/name], my brother [name]Cody[/name] and the twins are [name]Ryan[/name] and [name]Eric[/name]…People always assume that [name]Cody[/name] and I are the twins, even though we’re nearly 5 years apart. It doesn’t bother me though. I mean, as adults, how often do you talk about your sibling names except to close friends.
