Matilda or Mathilda?

Looking for feedback on 2 things! First, do you prefer spelling [name]Matilda[/name] or [name]Mathilda[/name]? I tend to lean toward [name]Mathilda[/name] b/c it’s different but then maybe that’s unnecessary since [name]Matilda[/name] is not commonly used anyway?

Second part, what are people’s favourite nicknames for [name]Matilda[/name]/[name]Mathilda[/name]?? Starting to fall for this name, girl # 2 due in 7 weeks eek.

I like [name]Matilda[/name] better, personally. I think more people would assume it’s spelled that way, anyway, and it seems more sweet and straightforward–[name]Mathilda[/name] is more clunky to me. :frowning: I really like [name]Matilda[/name] nn [name]Tilly[/name], but [name]Millie[/name] and [name]Mattie[/name] are cute, too…

Well, both are nice, but I prefer [name]Mathilda[/name]. I know it’s “Waltzing [name]Matilda[/name]” and St [name]Matilda[/name]… and maybe [name]Matilda[/name] is the older version. [name]Mathilda[/name] with an H is pretty well-established too though. And I think the H gives it more breath, delicacy, and mystery.

I’m with ash. I like [name]Matilda[/name] better unless there is some compelling reason for the alternate spelling (i.e. family name or something). DH’s niece goes by [name]Tillie[/name] which took some getting used to, but now I think it’s super cute and can’t imagine why I didn’t love it to begin with. [name]Love[/name] [name]Tilda[/name] for an adult!

The only real reason I’d be leaning toward [name]Mathilda[/name] is b/c our first daughter is Mhairi…so the H sort of goes? But that’s probably silly! I think [name]Matilda[/name] on its own actually looks like a prettier spelling. [name]Tillie[/name] is super cute but the only [name]Tilly[/name] I ever knew of was a grown man in our town and he was a bit odd ahah so now the name sounds more manly to me…even though it’s obviously much more cute and feminine.

I prefer [name]Matilda[/name] myself. [name]Mathilda[/name] looks a little clunky and awkward.

What did you end up going for ?

This is funny because my daughter was born around the same time as yours , mid [name_u]December[/name_u] 2020 and we called her [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] . I originally wanted matilda then received a text from my mom with the mathilda spelling and since we’re European my husband said it added a little European touch so that’s what we wrote on her birth certificate registration !
