Matilda & Zelda

[name_m]Just[/name_m] a quick question, not expecting or anything. Recently I’ve started to really like the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] but [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is one of my absolute favourite names and I’m worried that the two “-lda” endings might be a little too close to use together. I’d choose [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] over [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], so before I let myself fall too in love with it I thought I’d see what everyone else thought.

So, are [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] too matchy/rhymey/similar to you? Thanks

I don’t mind girls names ending in “a” but the names should have different sounds. Personally, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] are too similar with the “lda”. You could always use [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] for another girl but in the middle spot.

I don’t think they’re too close together. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though they have similar endings, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] has a wholesome, sweet image whereas [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is much more bold and daring. I think you could pull it off if you wanted. Besides, it’s very likely that they’ll be going by different nicknames anyway. You can choose nicknames that are farther apart from the getgo - [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] and [name_m]Zel[/name_m], for example.

^ I agree with This.

Thank you both. @mischa - I’ll definitely play around with [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] as a mn for a few of my other favourites but I think the thing that really attracts me to the name is the nickname [name_m]Zel[/name_m]. Maybe I should look into some other options in that direction.

@kimigrace - I’m glad you don’t think they’re too close. It’s a tough one - they’re not matchy to the point of impracticality or cruelty but they might sound a little too repetitive together. Funny you mentioned the nicknames as I love [name_m]Zel[/name_m] and am leaning towards [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], so that could help.

They’re too close, for me. Not just the “lda” ending, but the vowel sounds in the “i” and “e” are really close, too. [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] as a middle name for one daughter and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] as a first name for the other? Or vice versa.

@meyera4 - Thank you  Maybe with the nicknames they are just different enough.

Honestly, I didn’t even notice the “lda” link until I read your post. I probably would have noticed it eventually but I think that because the spirits of the names are so different they don’t feel quite as matchy. I would suggest using one as a fn and the other as a mn in the future though… mostly because I don’t know what you would do for a third female child if these were #1 & #2…[name_f]Isolda[/name_f]/[name_f]Ysolda[/name_f] maybe?

I think they sound fine together; I didn’t even notice the identical endings either.

If anything, I think the styles are overly different to each other. I see [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] with sisters [name_f]Isla[/name_f]/[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]/[name_f]Florence[/name_f]… trendy-old, yes, but popular rather than obscure. Still both lovely though and they sound cute together.

Bottom line is they’re fine

Upon reading the title, I thought that they’re both sassy names that I like! I didn’t notice the similar ending until you pointed out. Personally, I don’t mind that they both end in “-lda”. I’d say go for it!

Thank you all for your help; the chances of me actually having two daughters called [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] is so small, and their similarity seems so subjective, that I think I’ll keep both on my list for now just for fun, although the issue of what to call a third girl did occur to me (@lexiem - [name_f]Isolda[/name_f]'s lovely by the way!).

@oliviasarah - I know what you mean, I tend to think of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] as a sister to [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] rather than to [name_f]Zelda[/name_f].
