Matilda!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries!

I’ve always loved the name [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] since I was a little girl however was surprised by how popular it is on the Australian popularity charts! I’ve only ever met one person by this name however as I don’t have any children (yet!) perhaps I’m just missing the generation of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]'s! Would love to know how often you hear this name in Real Life as well as your thoughts on whether [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]'s is too trendy ATM and whether you think the name might date. Would love to hear any opinions on the subject!

Thank you!

It was my great-grandmother’s name, but other than that, I’ve only personally met one other [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], who was my middle school friend’s mom (she’d be around 50 now, so that’s the youngest I’ve met). That’s it for personal experience with the name…the rest would be from pop culture (for instance, the movie [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], or the random tidbit of info that it is [name_m]Heath[/name_m] [name_m]Ledger[/name_m]'s daughter’s name).

I don’t have much feeling either way as to whether or not it is trendy, but I don’t see it as dated. It doesn’t even quite feel like a so-called ‘grandma’ name to me. I truly can see it working on any age. It’s classy, smart, and I think it can work on any personality type. However, if it really is high on the charts where you live, then you do stand a reasonable chance of running to one at some point. If that would bother you, then I could see why you’d reconsider using it. Something else to keep in mind is the future of trends…I don’t know your situation, but if you are years off from having children, then the name could either become more popular or less popular at that point.

I only know one [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] (this spelling. Her nickname is [name_f]Hilda[/name_f]) and she’s in her 20s now. I really like this name. It’s just beautiful and strong to me, totally not trendy/dated.

It’s not super common in the U.S. [name_m]How[/name_m] common is it in Australia?

I don’t know any [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]'s (here in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]), but I think it works on all age groups, which is pretty cool! I don’t think it’s too trendy.

In the US, I know two, both 6 years old and both spelled [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f]. It’s probably a fluke that they both have the H spelling, but I feel like I hear the name on younger kids born to upper middle class (or higher) parents in my area fairly often. But again, I’m in the US, so that probably doesn’t mean much to you.

I’m in the UK and I notice Matildas because it’s my daughter’s middle name. It’s supposed to be fairly popular here (no. 27 in 2015) and has been for quite a few years now, but so far I’ve only met one, aged about 18 months. We do meet quite a few Tillys, and I suppose some of them could also be [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. But it still doesn’t feel overly popular or trendy to me. I love it, obviously!

I’ve never met a [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] in real life, but it is on my guilty pleasure list, because it’s too popular where I live (UK) for me to feel comfortable with. But I don’t think it matters if it’s trendy or might become dated, it comes across as vintage or classic, with literary connections. It’s sweet, a little innocent, but [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] has character, charm, wit, and intelligence, and I doubt that image will fade, regardless of how it might be seen in a few years. If popularity doesn’t bother you too much, I’d say go for it, but if it really is a problem (I totally get why it can be), maybe wait to see how it goes if you can, and it might die down a bit.

I live in the US and I’ve only met one [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. She went exclusively by [name_u]Mattie[/name_u] (at least when I knew her. I think she goes by both now) and I think she’s 2 years younger than me. I personally love the name!

I’ve never met a [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] ([name_f]Canada[/name_f]) but would love too!

Thanks for the replys, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is number 20 on the Australian popularity charts which is quite high but because I love the name this wouldn’t bother me unless it meant there would be a few [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]'s in her school etc. the name is quite popular on Nameberry so perhaps that’s giving me the impression it’s become a bit of trend because the overall consensus seems to be its still not overused (phew!)

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is an excellent name! I always think of [name_f]Empress[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] whenever I hear it, and she’s a nice role model for women so…

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is rather unheard of where I am, except for the children’s book and film. I think it’s lovely and would honestly use it in a heartbeat. It’s one of those names that’s popular (not trendy though - imo, trendy names are names like [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f], that appear literally out of nowhere and explode in popularity) for a good reason - it’s somewhat classic, and it fits beautifully with other perenially popular classics like [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], etc.
