They have the same letters (mostly), but a different sound. So I’m not sure it could be pulled off.

You could. But it’s a stretch. A lot of nicknames are
I think it could. If [name_f]Maude[/name_f] has come from [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], why couldn’t it also be a nn for [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]? I know a family who has a [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] who was nn’d Mad(s), so why not [name_f]Maude[/name_f], too?

There are people with nicknames which have very little in common with their given names.
A nickname I guess is really anything that sticks. So… I suppose why not?
