Let me just start by saying I know. I know [name]Maude[/name] isn’t the most popular name on here. I know not everyone likes it. I know a lot of people hate it. I know many think it’s old-lady-ish and harsh sounding. I know people think it’s ugly.
I know these things, and it’s not that I don’t care or that I don’t hear the naysayers. It’s just that, well- I kinda love the name.
So tell me, (honestly but kindly, please), is [name]Maude[/name] really all that bad?
A little [name]Maude[/name] would join big sisters [name]Willa[/name], [name]Cora[/name], and [name]Sybil[/name].
Here are two pretty cool girls named [name]Maude[/name] that I hope will make you like, or at least appreciate, the name.
I love [name]Maude[/name]! It used to be on my list of things to name twin girls. I like that it’s a little old-ladyish, but I think it’s starting to be very stylish and even a little waspy (I remember seeing in [name]Martha[/name] [name]Stewart[/name] magazine a few years ago some article on a holiday party she was having at an employee or friend’s house, and their teenage daughter was named [name]Maude[/name]). I think we’re going to start seeing more Maudes soon. I think it sounds lovely with your other daughters’ names as well.
You are not alone. I love [name]Maude[/name] too. She’s clunky and old-fashioned, sure, but I think that’s part of her charm. Not too long ago people would have said [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Edith[/name], and [name]Agnes[/name] were ugly and old lady, and yet there are many Berries who would fully endorse those choices now.
[name]Maude[/name] will be dusted off and ready for a revival very soon. Why not be ahead of the curve? Not to mention she goes great with [name]Willa[/name], [name]Cora[/name], and [name]Sybil[/name].
I don’t think it’s horrible but I wouldn’t use it myself. It reminds me of the show [name]Maude[/name] in the 70’s, and the character was played by [name]Bea[/name] [name]Arthur[/name], so it automatically makes me think of her. I prefer [name]Maeve[/name], which is sort of similar to [name]Maude[/name]. But I do think [name]Maude[/name] goes well with your other daughters names and if you love it you should use it!
I want to like it but I don’t. I can see the vintage charm but the sound of [name]Maude[/name] is just not appealing to me at all. I don’t dislke it because it’s “old lady” - I like some of those names.
However, [name]Maude[/name]‘s a good match with your other kids’ names. I think [name]Maude[/name] sounds best with a longer, somewhat frillier middle name. - [name]Maude[/name] [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Maude[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name], that sort of thing.
Sorry, but I just hate this name. I find it completely unattractive and it reminds me of mud. I love the names you have used for your daughters, especially [name]Sybil[/name]. I think [name]Mae[/name] would fit in great with your other children.
I like it.
[name]Maude[/name] and [name]Cora[/name] in particular just sound so right together [name]IMO[/name]. Yeah theres the [name]Bea[/name] [name]Arthur[/name] association, but I’d love to see [name]Maude[/name] get some fresh life.
I think [name]Maude[/name] would go well with your other daughters names, and it’s an interesting choice. It just needs to grow on me. It’s still a little musty, but I like [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Agnes[/name] and [name]Edith[/name], so it shouldn’t be a problem. I still picture [name]Ruth[/name] [name]Gordon[/name] playing [name]Maude[/name] in “[name]Harold[/name] and [name]Maude[/name]” with [name]Bud[/name] [name]Cort[/name]. Once I get past that, I’m sure I’d really like it.
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Maude[/name]! I think it fits perfectly with the names of your other daughters. I know a lot of people don’t like [name]Maude[/name], but I really can’t understand why, it’s nowhere near as harsh sounding as some other names (forgive me for saying so, but names like [name]Gladys[/name] and [name]Phyllis[/name], which is my nan’s name, and I wish I could love it). So I say go for it!
I love [name]Maude[/name]! There is the cutest little [name]Maude[/name] (age 2) with the rosiest cheeks in our neighborhood, so I have a great association with it. And I think it fits perfectly with the names of your older kids too.
I love [name]Maude[/name], and I love that her sisters would be [name]Willa[/name], [name]Cora[/name], and [name]Sybil[/name]. Those are all favorites of mine!
Thanks for all of the feedback, both positive and negative. I have to say, I’m a bit surprised by how many of you seem to like [name]Maude[/name]. I was expecting far worse.
We’re really loving [name]Maude[/name] with our girls names, and I think it may be “the one”.
Our daughters [name]Willa[/name] and [name]Cora[/name] absolutely love the [name]Madeline[/name] books and keep telling us that if it’s a girl we have to name her [name]Madeline[/name]. It’s too popular for our taste to use as a first name, but I think it could make a really sweet middle name, especially given that [name]Willa[/name] and [name]Cora[/name] will have “named” the baby. I think that would be really special.
So what do you think of [name]Maude[/name] [name]Madeline[/name]?
Thanks!
And oh, @lori johnson - that blog is fantastic! Thanks! And I have to admit, I have a minor case of name-envy of the Blairs of Design Mom. They’re all such bold choices but the family and those kids completely pull them off.
I want to like [name]Maude[/name] [name]Madeline[/name]- I do love that your daughters picked the middle- but I’ve never been a fan of alliteration. That, and there’s the Ma, and a d sound. Maybe I’m being too picky. It’s adorable.
