Maurice

I’m really liking the name [name_u]Maurice[/name_u] recently; wondering if it would be inappropriate to call a white child that, given that its meaning is “dark-skinned”. What does everyone think?

I don’t think it’s inappropriate at all. My favourite Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast, has a white character named [name_u]Maurice[/name_u], and I haven’t heard any controversy over it.

[name_u]Maurice[/name_u] is a lovely name! I’d never really thought much of it, but it’s cool to see it making an appearance on Nameberry.

@babettee thank you! I got that name from E. M. [name_m]Forster[/name_m]'s novel ‘[name_u]Maurice[/name_u]’, and the character is presumably also white. I’m glad you like it too!

I think it would be fine. Most people don’t pay attention to name meanings and to my knowledge, it’s not a name that has any important or special cultural meaning?
[name_u]Maurice[/name_u] is interesting. I enjoy the literary vibe and the softer sounds

[name_u]Maurice[/name_u] is a [name_m]French[/name_m] name and most [name_m]French[/name_m] people are light-skinned, so I don’t see the issue. I don’t think the etymological meaning is important, since most people don’t pay any attention to name meanings nor do they expect someone to reflect their name’s literal meaning. [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] refers to a place in ancient Turkey, but I’m pretty sure most women in the world with that name are in no way Turkish.
